Fourteen year old me *loved* Great Expectations. (Enough to read the unabridged, while my peers chose a short version.) It was clearly a fave of my teacher’s, and that made it extra fun.
There are a lot of adaptations of Dickens to film, but I have a soft spot for the one that had a very young Daniel Radcliffe as David Copperfield. There are many other future Harry Potter actors in it. Clearly the person doing the HP casting saw this version.
Oh, the Penguins definitely took over the archipelago of shelves in my library too, but there are a handful of these that I have enjoyed, periodically because Modern Library found or commissioned such accessible translations. How's this week starting on the range for you, Michael?
Hey, please, I am asking if the print of this publishing house is good or bad, the quality of paper .. ? Because I want to buy Marcel proust In search of lost time as for the translation they own ( Moncrieff kilmartin ). It's a six-volume novel. Any help !;❤
Among the Christian mystics? St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross are probably my top two. I discovered a lot of writers through the volume. Any for you? Best, Jack
Would you be willing to do a video on “Shadow Country” at some point? It’s a masterpiece, one of my favorite novels. Don’t think there’ll ever be such a thing as THE Great American Novel, but this book is belongs in the GAN canon!
Shadow Country is definitely a masterpiece! I sense that would be a three video sequence, one for each of the parts. The middle third resonates at the end but is such a tonal shift between the beginning and the final tunnel into Watson’s consciousness and life. Cheers, Jack
I got myself a copy of The Basic Writings of Existentialism last year. I went through a big existentialism phase at the end of college and start of grad school (as one does), but I haven’t read much on the topic for a while.
So you're not still an existentialist, Lukas?!? I was surprised at how well-edited I found that anthology. It also get me into reading more from Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo. I hope this month is going well for you! Best, Jack
@@ramblingraconteur1616 Heh, well I've never *called* myself an existentialist. I think I'd characterize myself as an optimistic nihilist who is also a philosophical pessimist. Labels are weird. 🤣
@@acruelreadersthesis5868 that's only because you've read books on the topic. I guarantee you that if you read plato, plotinus, iamblichus, proclus, eriugena, aquinas, eckhart, other classical and medieval philosophers, you'd become a theist straight away. don't limit yourself to post-kantianism and nihilism!! it's illusory!!

This was great. I don’t have a bunch of Modern Library for some reason. The Penguins just took over, I guess.

The book on the mystics looks great. It’s really hard to find some of them in print… do you have any favorites among them?
