Devil Anse was called Devil for a reason. I'm a Kentucky girl. Born and raised in the Appalachian hills. I've lived in Paintsville Ky all the way through to Catlattsburg Ky and in between. Been on the old trail I don't know how many times now. I'm actually kin to the McCoy's on my grandma's side. She was so proud to be a McCoy. The thing that touched her the most and taught us kids is what ole man Randall went through Really. She said it doesn't matter who or how it started look at the out come. Randall lost his children his wife beat to where she was never right again. House burned. Lost everything. Then she pointed out that the poor man burned to death after a life of hell. Not much peace for him on this earth. Then she said look at the other side. Yes Devil lost some kin in the feud but nothing like Randall. Devil Anse murdered people and got away with it. Others went to jail but not him. His own brother died in prison. And the Hatfield's let cotton top take the blame for Cap killig Randall's daughter. And Devil lives long enough to get saved. When they say life isn't fair their not kiddin. I hope my kin and the others have finally found peace.
Ummm that kinda ain't what happened 😂😂😂 and uncle anse was called devil anse because he had a cousin who gripped the gospel gun called preacher anse so there was preacher preacher anse the ornry one was called devil anse yessss they just said it
Very reminiscent of the feuds between the Border Reiver families set in the No Mans Land between England and Scotland. George MacDonald Fraser wrote some interesting books on the raiding at that time
I have a feeling that the Scots brought their tradition of feuding clans with them when they came to settle the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Borderlands are always contentious.
Sounds to me that Devil Anse was just an evil man simply put. Had some respect for him until this video stated that he killed a bear cub for no reason. As an animal lover that really get me angry. But still a good video and quite informative.
He killed more than a bear cub. He did cold blooded murder and got away with it. Devil even got to live long enough to get saved. I've heard about this feud all my life. Born and raised in Eastern Kentucky and being kin to the McCoy's I've heard nothing but. My whole life I was told the Hatfield's were bad people and the worst one was Devil. Well maybe Jim Vance was worse. Look at what happened to the McCoy family. And I'm so sick of hearing that it started over a pig. LOL. Come on. Ole Randall got the worst of it I think. Children murdered wife never the same. Lost everything. But I guess someone didn't think that was enough for the ole man. After a life of hell the man burns to death. WOW. I don't and can't ever understand why that feud even happened. I walk the ole trail from time to time thinking about them all and wondering what was it all for. So much hate and evil. I was feed this my whole life. Home and school. All I hope is that they finally find peace.

On January 7, 1865, Harmon was shot and killed in a cave along Peter Creek in Pike County. The guerillas, led by Jim Vance-a Hatfield relative-tracked Harmon to the cave, shot him, and left him to die. Asa Harmon McCoy's connections to the Union, more so than his last name, led to his death in that cave.
@@thecowboy9698 I did not allow myself any judgement either. That is how I read it. That's why I wrote it. For your information, if I had been a Southerner at the time, I would have shot him too
@@JustMe-mh2pn So are you a Southerner? Me, l'm a Texican and l once participated in reenactments of The War Between the States. The first unit had a guy who is a Hatfield,l asked him iffen he were kin to "Devil" Anse Hatfield. The guy claimed he was a 12th cousin. Don't know iffen he was joking or serious!
I need to add here that as a McCoy decendant, what I have been told is Asa Harmon's slave, Pete, took food and supplies to him and was also who discovered his body. It's interesting to note he fought for the union and was a slave owner (the only slaves he owned were Pete and his wife, that I know of). I use this to make the case that not all confederates were slave owners and not a supported slavery. I don't know if any other slaves owned by the Mccoys at that time.
Let me answer the question that is hot on your lips . Why did the South lose the war ? Because the south was less capable to create something greater than the sum of it's parts . And of course we can further dive into why that is ... but do we really need to ?

Excellent series.
Thanks for the videos. Well researched, produced, and narrated. Most realize it takes time and funds to produce these.
I love it thank you

From reading the book " Tale of the Devil", Harmon did not die this way.

@@JustMe-mh2pn - Well, in the eyes of the South, Asa was considered a traitor. If it hadn't been Jim Vance, someone else would've probably got him.
