I was so blown away by this performance! Her enunciation on the whistle chorus was phenomenal 🙌 love the added rasp and that low E3, too.
There is no denying anymore she is THE female pop vocalist of this era, like the great ones that went before her; Christina, Mariah, Celine, Whitney, Aretha etc, she has earned her stripes.

popular opinion: ariana is so talented at singing and so is georgina at coaching
whistle notes are already impressive, especially live, and the fact that she’s actually singing the words WHILE doing the whistle notes absolutely blows my mind
the rasp is intentional, she has used it multiple times throughout her entire career and it’s to add more “soul” and texture to her voice.
the D5 right before her E5 belt didn’t have any rasp and that’s a clear sign that it’s intentional for the reasons i said above.
not to mention, if she was deteriorating vocally she wouldn’t have the best technique of her career this year.

I agree that her technique has improved so much and she sounds great!
However, I don't believe rasp can be intentional...its an uncontrollable thing in a person's voice (some people naturally have husky/raspy voices their entire lives).

I seriously don't understand how people said these whistle notes were bad. They sounded a little bit strained but they were absolutely amazing.

I completely agree and i’ve always said that the “rasp” she’s using in her vevo performances are intentional and are 100% a stylistic choice. You can tell because she has ease all through the range throughout the rest of the performance

The rasp is definitely adding more layers/diversity to her range. I particularly like her enunciation in this performance, nothing muffled.

I loved the performance, it’s definitely her best so far. A lot of people were underwhelmed by the whistles but it was absolutely fantastic and I thought she executed them perfectly. I’m sure she’ll start getting better at phrased whistles as time goes by. As for the song, it’s my favorite from the positions album.

She’s following the Mariah timeline in terms of when the rasp started to occur (1995ish). The angelic quality of this is textbook MC, but she’s done such a nice job with it!!! Really diversifying. ps. how good is the trumpet

I agree with you re: the rasp. I've always struggled to get on board with Ariana (despite her talent being undeniable) as I found her voice too samey, syrupy and sweet and, let's face it, her enunciation has always been DREADFUL. But this Ari, with the deeper, more mature elements to her voice, I dig. She sounds more authentic and interesting.

Again, her enunciation is a stylistic choice. She admitted on The Voice recently that with pop music, her enunciation is not the best. But with any other type of music, her enunciation is on point.

I agree with you- she actually sounds stronger than before. I feel like around her age is when we start to really gel with our sound/technique in check. I know for me my late 20’s/early 30’s brought a new strength to my sound and ease to performance.

This was the most powerful and soulful I've ever heard her and she's improved dramatically since her start. The rasp was beautiful. I loved her whistle phrasing and did it myself this morning. The weird thing about mine is that I do it with my upper chest voice. Like I can feel the tension in vibration in my upper chest. It's very weird. Maybe I'm using mixed and have a good range in it but I'm not sure. Has anyone else done this and is it even possible?

Absolutely in her vocal prime, and this is without a doubt one of her most impressive and defining songs in her catalog. I love her homages to the vocal greats (Mariah, Whitney, Celine) and the way that she blends her style and Ari-isms into her work; she really is mastering her craft and it shows!! She continues to prove that she is a serious vocalist and is/will be one of the indisputable vocalists and artists of this generation.
