Always keep your awning in unless you are using it, never leave it out when you're not there.

I prefer to put out a shade tent from Sam’s or Costco. Let the wind rip a $100 tent and not my $2,000 awning

    Away from camper list.
    1 put your awning in
    2. Turn off your city water or water pump.
    3. Lock all the doors.
    Please add yours.
    Happy camping

This should be SOP for RVers with their Awnings. A giveaway is your awning starts to bounce with the breeze. Time to roll it up.
Tie downs change the weakest link to the awning. Physics will find a different place to wreck it.

I'm new to RVing as the past couple of years. The RV dealer I found was a small family-owned shop. The owner himself did the walk through with me. He said never, never, never leave the awning out if you leave the RV. If you want it out when you're at the RV, put it out only if there's a lightest of breezes and you're outside under it. Or, as he said, put it out whenever you want! You won't believe how much money I make every summer reinstalling new awnings for people. It's really your choice.

Especially after last week from Texas to Alabama to Chicago to Denver..... RV.s are very deadly to be caught in when hit by those danger ropes

I am with you. There are places that can be dead calm and have a big wind gust. This happened to us when we were in the Yosemite valley. Every day in the afternoon there would be a sever wind gust for about 15 min then it would get calm again. Another place like that was Granby CO. We were at a rally at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains RV park. There were several people lost awnings.
There is some kind of deal where a lot of people can't set up there RV without putting the awning out.
The coaches with the wind sensor don't retract fast enough to keep the awning safe.

Some folks feel if they have an awning that it should always be out. I never put my awning out unless I'm going to be outside and I want to block the sun. If it starts raining I bring the awning in. When picking a RV site I always try and get a sire where my awning side/door faces north so I don't get the sun on that side of trailer. Sometime I might put the awning out just far enough to block the sun from hitting the dining room window. I use my awning very sparingly.

We are currently I'm western Colorado. We have had huge wind gusts. Between 30 - 50 mph. Our awning has stayed in 95% of the time. When it's warm and calm it goes out. My policy is if my Drone is going to struggle in the wind then the wind is too strong for our awning.

Hi Todd, I'm looking at the August rally, I see ticket are $250, I assume that is PER PERSON and site prices are $75-110. I'm wondering what does the $250 get us? I live in central Florida and so only 2 hours away !!

Great info as always! I have a question for you. We recently bought a new camper with a load bearing/sway control hitch and the technician that did the "delivery walk through" advised to disable the truck's sway control feature when towing. He said that the truck's sway control would fight the hitch. I read the truck's (F250 SD) owner's manual and it indicates that the truck's sway control only activates when there is sway. By that logic, the only time that the truck's sway control will come into play is when the hitch's functionality has failed and the trailer becomes unstable. Is there an underlying factor that I am missing that you could elaborate on?

Turn off the power to the wind sensor so it doesn't retract when its strapped down.

The one time you leave it out and walk away is the time the wind is going to make a sales call.

I would love to have the option for a shade cloth instead of the awning.

I am actually considering replacing my awning - it is old and needs replacing - with 60% or greater shade cloth. I don't think it will act like a sail/kite since it is so holey. I am stationary in the RV and nearly always at home so I prefer to leave the awning out in "carport" mode. Thoughts?

I tied down my electric awning one time. Well, it POURED rain and started to fill up because it wasn’t angled well enough. When I untied it, the auto dumping feature caused it to collapse and bent some stuff. Not bad though. Haven’t done it since. It’s electric, have it out when you’re there and can push the button.

Lost one awning on first RV 12 years ago. I would rather not have awnings. They just keep on getting larger on newer RVs. I never put mine out.

If I set up my own rv, the awing will ONLY be used when I'm NOT in the mountains. Wind interacts with mountains differently than anything else, and not playing it safe could lead to an rv tumbling down a mountain with a strong enough downdraft. I'm not taking chances with my safety. If I need the fabric in the awning to dress a wound, I'll make an exception, but that's the ONLY exception.

My mom had a wind detector on her awning at her house would something like that work on an Rv awning I think it is set to 15 mph wind before it rolls up by itself

4:22 - I lived in Texas. When it got cold, I was told the "bob wire fence" between Canada and Texas fell down.
I have seen many awnings destroyed by gusts.
And be prepared for strong gusts in the middle of the night in a heavy rain when you have to wind the awning in.

In my opinion, the best way to save your awning is to not use it. We use an easy up awning. It is cheaper and easier to replace.
