I have a Paiste 20" Dark Energy Mark II, and I feel no need for any other ride, maybe the only "downside" is that it's so articulate that you can hear every little mistake :D Washier rides are more forgiving.
This is like choosing your favorite food from a giant menu. There is no single best type of cymbal for everyone. I even have a variety of cymbals (with matching sticks and brushes) for each type of venue I play, depending on style of music, large or small venue, acoustic or electric. This still makes for a nice conversation, though. Good video!
I don't favor using a crash as a ride, mostly because I don't want the overly-loud "wash". I want that "ping" and a really clear, separated bell. The one exception I've made is for the 2002 Big Beat "multi" 22"..... I made the compromise because I only use 3 cymbals.
Where was this vid years ago !?!? Thank you so much! Finally someone does a demo on dark versus dry that actually makes sense. Oh, and I’m surprised how much I like that color sound lol
I think the Dark energy mark 1 ride is the best all-around ride and the second is the coloursound 900, the crashes depends more for the genre you play cause you need a brighter cymbal if the genre is metal or extreme metal cause the volumes in these genres are very high so one low volume cymbal will be lost in the mix so some cymbals depended exactly from the genre you play and from your personal likes!!
Dry is seldom my choice. I like dark rides based on what I hear while I'm playing but they don't carry well, so I tend toward brighter rides when playing rock and pop. 22" 2002 is frequently my choice, but I love the 22" Signature Traditional and I have a couple of Sabians I like; the David Garbaldi Soul Side Ride and a XRS that has 3 rivets. Nice video, thanks
Nice, perfect timing for this to pop up. My current ride (Meinl Classic) is too bright and resonant for some of the stuff I've been playing so was thinking of getting a new one.
I love the Dark energy mark 1 ride. I was looking for that for years until i found the Paiste Masters Mellow bluebird ride at a drum show and fell in love with that. Would still absolutely love a Dark Energy Mk1 though
20 pst 7 sounds awesome. The dark cymbals also sound pretty good. ME 602 sounded good also. Not a huge fan of the dry cymbals. Reminds me of playing cheap super thick bronze cymbals when I first started.
I've always been a "sounds good is good" kind of guy so I've never been a brand loyalist. I'll play any make or model that I like. So I've always used a mix. Right now it's Paiste 2002's for bright and Meinl Pure Alloy's for dark. But I do agree with some of the posters here about not being crazy for dry cymbals. Unless it's a china or some other kind of effect cymbal. Those can add a unique flavor to a set up. Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Thin crash comes to mind. Not the kind of thing you maybe want to use a main crash, but can make a hell of an impression with a good smack at the end of a song.
I used to love Paiste Cymbals back then when I had my old 502 kit. Now I think they sound "weird" just to say a word. PST7 doesn't have definition and the "note" it produces it's way to high for me, even like a 14" crash, close with the 900 which looks beautiful but it doesn't sound so musical as the others. I'd say overall Paiste has awesome brilliant cymbals, but for darker or dry sounds Meinl or Zildjians K win. (of course it's not a competition and my opinion is just that, my own taste). Great video!
the best type of cymbal: always the one´s that I am banging at the moment.. we can probably agree to the fact that I am poor and my current setup probably would be better at a shooting range for indicating hits but... K-coustom 20" zildijan ride. A Custom 17 "18" crashes , 14 "paiste 101 (blue lable) hats , 14" sabian AA mini china, 18" 2002 paiste china, a smackstack of some sort.. and a 80" paiste symphonic gong would be my ultimate kit.
Honestly with today's mics and mixing techniques you can definitely get away with dark and even dry cymbals in loud settings. I encourage you to look at the setup of the drummer from Jinjer, it's pretty loud and fast music yet the cymbals the drummer uses are very dark. Ahab's latest album is also a good example of pretty dry cymbals in a loud and slow paced environment. It works beautifully. Basically choose what you like because it'll probably work anyway, and it might give the music more uniqueness.
While I wouldn't say it is the best for all applications I would say the Dark Crisp is my favorite in regards to preferred sound and versatility. Similar to my Bosphorus ride.. Unfortunately I don't remember the model at the moment
Wow, that extra dry one sounds really bad to me, it feels like when you're a kid and using a pot lid as a cymbal for your pillow drumset. Between the dark and bright I like the crash better on the dark ones but the bell on the bright ones sounds perfect
I feel like the Dark Energy was more representative of a "dry" sound than the Extra Dry... the Extra dry kinda just sounded like you put tape on the underside of a ZBT ride
These are all excellent Cymbals regardless of budget. Even the PS-7's sound good. My favorite, the Dark Energy Mark 1 (I'm biased, I have the 20" & 22" in it). Think I need to get a Mark II now (Keep feeding my G.A.S 🤕)
The best type, is the kind I have. I always had mid tier cymbals. Most I ever spent is 18 on a Sabina aa which i still have after 18 years. I did just get a pair of 15 sound edge tho. Love em. I used these zildjian zbt hats for twenty years, and I swear I beat those things into sounding good, cuz they do
As someone who can only spend so much on gear, these comparisons can sure make lower range cymbals sound shitty. I have a set of PST7s (medium) and they do fine for the little I play, but $190 PST7 20" light ride is obviously going to sound even worse when compared to a $725 22" 602. Still appreciated the comparison.
I also have a DE MK1 22" ride which I love. Tried the 20" and 22" MK11, didn't like them as much. Now looking at the 602's.🤦 It's a never ending hunt on finding "The" perfect cymbal.😵💫
Color sound and pst 7 have a nasty resonance and they sound like a school bell. I like Dark crisp and Dark energy rides. Extra dry sound interesting to me. All crashes sound nice to my ears. 22in crash sounds otherwordly.
Not a fan of that extra dry at all, and there is nothing extra crisp about that cymbal either. Now that Dark Energy is a fantastic sounding cymbal! I’m rather surprised how good those crash cymbals do as well!
Those Master's Darks sound great in this video. Some of these are awful though. The Colorsound made me throw up in my mouth, a little. PST7? Sounds like a little kids toy cymbal. That Extra Dry? Donk! Not a fan. But I would gladly take a set of those Master's Darks.
I like my cymbals bright, my coffee dark, & my humor dry.. Cowboy Drummer = 💯
😂
So you're an A Zildjian guy probably
@@Westside_69
Indeed good sir!
The pst 7 series is my favorite. I love how that 20" pst7 light ride sounds as a crash.
The Dark Energy and the 602 Modern Essentials are my favorite Paiste series.
That 22" 602 crash is a beautiful instrument. I might have to get me one of them.
Yeh, great series. I bought 24” 602 ME ride and I use my 20” 602 ME ride as a crash, but i would love to replace it with 22” or 20” 602 ME crash.
The 602 China is fantastic as well
That Colorsound is the purplest sounding cymbal I’ve ever heard!
I have a Paiste 20" Dark Energy Mark II, and I feel no need for any other ride, maybe the only "downside" is that it's so articulate that you can hear every little mistake :D Washier rides are more forgiving.

Love that Formula 602...
I'm a big fan of the masters line, but that last cymbal sounds amazing.
The dark sounds are the best

Paiste cymbals always look and sound the best
I think the PST7 line is nearly as good as the 2002's.
@@Lupine. i haven't heard them in real life one next another
I myself play RUDEs
@@AndreiPredoiu Yeah man! RUDEs are the only complete set of Paistes I have. The Novo China is a monster.

@asswangpd3316 I have a rude thin crash and it's amazing
Nice, perfect timing for this to pop up. My current ride (Meinl Classic) is too bright and resonant for some of the stuff I've been playing so was thinking of getting a new one.
If i took one, it would be the Dark Crash 20". Nice collection 👍
I love the Dark energy mark 1 ride. I was looking for that for years until i found the Paiste Masters Mellow bluebird ride at a drum show and fell in love with that. Would still absolutely love a Dark Energy Mk1 though
Damn drum thing started a whole new genre
I like BRIGHT but not loud. It’s hard to find a balance. I think the 602 does it.
The dark energy sounds great. Nice balance
my paiste 20” 302 ride is my favorite, bell sounds amazing on it still
20 pst 7 sounds awesome. The dark cymbals also sound pretty good. ME 602 sounded good also. Not a huge fan of the dry cymbals. Reminds me of playing cheap super thick bronze cymbals when I first started.
I have the Masters Dark Crisp 22" and the stick definition is great, just wish it had a better crashability to it. Awesome stuff!

Nice video. I love the color sound, and the 602. The pst works also depending on my budget and the gig. Not a fan of the dry ride. They have no soul.😂

Hmmm...What about flat-ride cymbals and the hum factor?
The formula in ALL categories!
Bright for rock
Dark for jazz

I didn't expect to like the extra dry ride, but then I was like duh, it says Paiste right on it lol
The dry one sounds like putting tape on a regular ride
I’m a Sabian guy, but I think that PST sounds pretty damn good. Better than all the others, IMO.

The 21" Dark Energy ride sounds the best in mu opinion
20" dark crash steals the show
The Dark Energy is awful, but good. I have the 20" and 22". I would like a Mark 2 now. That dark crisp is also drool-worthy.
