This week, Mike and James take a look at the first NEO-GEO CD game they've played in the "James and Mike Plays" series. This week, it is Metal Slug!
An arcade favorite for many gamers, it is a very simple concept, but simple doesn't necessarily mean boring! You take the control of Cpt. Marco Rossi and Lt. Tarma Roving of the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force. You are there to stop the infamous General Morden, who has initiated a coup d'etat taking place against all the world's governments. His most recent attack has given him access to a new, powerful all-terrain combat tank dubbed the "Metal Slug."
The game was released in 1996 and developed by Nazca Corporation, and published by SNK. The game, having been originally released on the "Neo Geo MVS arcade platform", made its home debut on the NEO-GEO, and soon after on the NEO-GEO CD.
With the use of the arcade stick on the NEO-GEO systems, it translated very well into the home video-game market. Having an authentic feeling really DOES make the game feel a lot better. In fact, it was so popular, it got ported to many different consoles, including the Sega Saturn, Playstation, and many other online services, such as the Virtual Console and Playstation Network.

Cinemassacre the tower's name is Elizabeth Tower named after Queen Elizabeth
Did mike sing a GG Allin song? I suppose, “bite it, you scum,” maybe a common enough phrase, but it’s like his most famously known track
I wish that there should be an AVGN episode covering the entire Metal Slug Series.
Big Bens the Bell ya Bellends!😂
Ya wanna play Contra?
The Metal Slug series has one of most beautiful pixel art in history
Not only Metal Slug, everything SNK made is beautiful piece of pixel art. Last Blade, KoF, Samurai showdown. Imagine if they make RPG game
bunnyfreakz
...Samurai Spirits RPG?
It's easy to develop a beautiful pixel art when it's on a console that is literally a home arcade device.
One pixel art
Yess
Here in Bolivia we still have arcades they are generally on the villages and poor sides of the city there is one close my house and the most popular games are metal slug, tekken tag, some kind of weird game of soccer with super powers and turtles in time, all the kids go there after school.
KeviNOlighT Jaja si, los internets siempre estan llenos de chicos jugando warcraft.
johnny montana T_T
johnny montana Treasure what you have. That arcade is stuck in time in a better era! u_u
johnny montana In Colombia, more specifically in Bogotá, exist some arcade machines on drug stores and grocery stores that have The King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown or Metal Slug; and once on a while you can encounter a specialized Store that haves a variety of Arcade Machines.
johnny montana I live in the US and we still have arcades inside some shopping malls. A lot of bowling alleys have arcades in them too. I think Ive seen metal slug in a few of them recently.
Metal Slug: one of those series that doesn't get enough credit, yet has had like 8 or 9 games. I loved this series when I used to frequent arcades more often. Even got it for the PSP. A true classic.
I used to go to the arcade just for Metal Slug. It never gets old, definitely a retro masterpiece.
Metal slug will always be a master piece no matter how old it is.
I love the whole series, yet the second one is more interesting.
It's one of those magic games that will never age badly, well, only when it gets paralyzed for too much action on screen.
@@juanrodriguez9971 Well, it’s an old game. Converted into human age, it would probably be, like, 80 years old, or something; so, no wonder it can’t handle too much action. 🙃
On a Neo-Geo CD console, if you press a+b+c+d+start simultaneously the system soft resets.
This reset can also occur when the plugs on the controller is worn & some of the solder joints are broken. Grounding out pin 5 or pin 6 (I don't remember exactly, I know its the one that carries the +5 volt signal) will make it reset as well. Perhaps have someone take a look at the plugs on your Neo sticks.
Or maybe if Spazz Mike stop hammering all of the buttons for like a half second. He was pounding all his buttons on the damn loading screen and soft rebooted the console.
"Metal Slug" is a not just a cool "run n' gun" game; it is like a work of art. It makes it hard to pay attention to everything when there is so much to see.
I'm really surprised Mike hadn't ever played Metal Slug before. I was born in '95 so I missed out on being old enough for and being able to remember the best years of arcades in the 90's and even then I remember that Metal Slug cabinets were some of the most common (and best) arcade games I could find anywhere up until like 2005.
I remember my cousins and I would walk for like an hour to this little shop which had an arcade cabinet of metal slug and we would just hang out there all day to the point that the store owners knew us personally and when they were moving away to another part of the Philippines, they gave us the arcade cabinet..
I'll never forget that guy man.
Faith in humanity: restored
still got the cabinet ?
Walter White
Yeah, It's now at my cousin's home. Since I can't really take an arcade cabinet halfway across the world to America, I had to leave it in the phillippines. I did leave it though with my cousin who is a collector of such things. He sends me photos now and then of it's condition. It's looking damn well near mint (yeah, he's been restoring it as well), I wish I can just hop on a plane back home and play the god damn thing
Andre Cruz that's awesome, at least someone owns it who cares about it rather than it just sitting some where getting in bad condition.
That was the coolest guy ever bro, you got really lucky knowing good people like that..
That tapping sound is so satisfying.
Ryan N
and stops when the console fucks up...
dat arcade stick!
+Ryan N
sounds like rain hitting the roof.
i could listen to that tap tap sound for consecutive weeks without getting bored
What switch are Neo geo AES stick using? Seimitsu?
Man, I can't believe you guys never played this game before. This series is HUGELY popular here in Brazil.
*IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.
And in latinamerica
Here in Colombia Too, this is our second Contra.
Andres Lozano Italy, Spain... Metal Slug is very popular in Europe.
Is this game more popular in latin america than in the U.S?
Gotta love the sound of the button clicks. Not being sarcastic - there's something about it.
Its 2016 and I thinks the graphics still look amazing.
Not really...
This is some of the gighest quality speite work in existence. Of course it looks good.
laCumbre the sequels look even better
It's 2020 and I still think it has the best pixel art for a videogame I have ever seen.
It's 2021 and I think the graphics still look amazing.
RAWKET LAWNCHAIR
lol made me giggle
LOVE THAT!!
HAVY MASHEEN GUN!
SHATGAN!
FLAN THROWAR
England here. I was going to mention about Big Ben being the bell and not the tower, but you guys covered it.
I'll show myself out.
Does the tower have a name?
They said so in the video
neeeeeeeeeh
Wow, "Phat". That is a totally 90's word. It's so 90's, that even in the 90's it got old.
No one says "Da Bomb" anymore either.
"Epic" is definitely done, or if not, it's definitely on it's way out. A relic of the 2000's.
"Crunk" is another once-popular word I don't hear anymore.
Tubular bro
Thanks so much for putting these up on Mondays! Makes the worst day of the week waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better!
4 buttons on the controller and you never used the grenade o_0
I love Metal Slug since I was kid. Best shoot'em up game ever!
Mike got the code wrong and I'm utterly surprised that James 'doesn't remember the infamous code.
It was "up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start" and was famous for being "the" code for pretty much all Konami games.
Actually, wasn't start not part of the actual code, and was just what started the game after the code?
I haven't played Contra in like, FOREVER. And I still know the code even to this day, I haven't used it tho, sometimes I would just welcome the challenge and go Leeroy Jenkins that shit.
Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't there a select in there ? B A Select start
koss41 Select was for 2 player.
pressing up,up,dn,dn,left, right, left, right sets the code, pressing ANY button other than start (1p) or select (2p) at this point resets the code, you also can input the code slowly but you must press start in the main screen or else the demo will play, even if you do it slowly and the demo has begun playing just press start to go back and start the game, as long as you dont press any other button the code is kept
If only they know about grenades..
SmoothTura You still die a shitton in that game.
They've used it, but kinda sloppilly.
And about main gun in a tank
I was waiting to see this comment before I started to vent😆
Wish I had friends like James and Mike, they seem like a couple of very well down to earth individuals. :D
I think what happened with the neo geo CD is that the "open CD drive switch" fucked up xD
You should play Metal Slug 3: it's bigger and better, the best in the series alongside 1 and X (which is actually a Metal Slug 2 tweaked version).
Sooo hard though. The circle of aliens on the end of the second level steal SO many lives from me. I play on the hardest difficulty.
The word "Cool" has been used for over a hundred years at the same consistency and has maintained its meaning.
The GG Allin reference killed me
Lol same here
I look forward to seeing your 2-minute video next week. :P
this one was at least almost 10 mins :/
not if James plays with the skill of that one morning before school, where he beat the game with no code.
Edwin Diaz no....
Edwin Diaz Pretty sure it was a joke, as in "they will get wrecked in Contra"
YipYapYoup Indeed, that was what I was going for. I won't solidly claim that they won't get far, but I know that the game is very hard without the extra lives code. Most players can't get past the second stage.
The graphics in Metal Slug are so awesome. So much detail and so much personality.
It's charm makes me think of Borderlands actually
CarlTheBanan It reminds me of the art style in the original Dragon Ball manga. Everything has this sort of compact rounded look. Very cool but also kind of cute at the same time.
They actually used sprites for backgrounds. so thats why they can did so much details. But really i like that feeling of a game and mindless shooting :D
I remember playing Metal Slug 3 with my friend way back in the day. We had to master it. It was a team effort on an epic scale, especially considering the final level was the size of the all the previous levels combined. 3 was by far the toughest one. A true test of skill.
The tower with Big Ben inside didn't have an official name until the Queen's diamond jubilee, it was just called the Westminster Palace Clock Tower. To commemorate the jubilee it was named the Elizabeth Tower.
Who elese Loves Metal Slug I have the Ps2 Anotholgy version Its soo Good!
I dare not count the amount of coins I "wasted" on the arcades playing this game :D
Jared Pena I wish I could find Anthology! I don't really like ordering online so I rely on finding games locally and I've never come across it
Dam i feel you bro hope u find it (:
GG Allin
Dude. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Soy pedant.
One of the best series ever. Always loved the art style in these games.
Yay new episode and finally longer. Glad u listened to our feedback and realized that we want more than 4 minutes a week :p i kno u're busy tho gonna be a pop
The Metal Slug series is one of my favorite of all time. Been waiting a long time to see James play or talk about these games.
The Big Ben clock tower is just the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. Everyone just calls is Big Ben anyway. Other aspects of that level look to have some interesting London-related elements too. Like all the shops as part of the bridge. During Medieval times, London Bridge was completely covered in shops and houses, just like a normal street. So they weren't underneath it like in this game, they were on top.
You should play genesis - contra hard corps!!
got to love it when somebody's old man drops the F-bomb being a kid. always funny as a kid.
The clock tower with Big Ben in was called "Clock Tower" but got renamed to Elizabeth Tower for the Queen's Jubilee recently
this amazing artwork with the crazy boss designs makes for impeccable presentation for a neo-geo game
I love these episodes with James and Mike! Keep these videos coming!
this game is THE game !
I really wish James and Mike consider play the Metal Slug III on steam. I think the game reached it's peak at that, the gameplay is perfect.
Ah, Metal Slug. One of the most addicting arcade shooters I've played. I used to play the hell outta this game when I was younger. I'd usually go through about $5 worth of quarters on the machine in Cici's Pizza. But then the place closed down, meaning no more scrumptious pizza buffets and no more Metal Slug.
A few years later, I get Metal Slug Anthology on PS2. OH. MY. GOD. The original game was available, in all its glory, with infinite continues, meaning no pay-to-play crud. AND there were six others I never heard of.
1. Played in arcade prior to Collection.
2. Never heard of it.
X (Remake of 2): Played it at an Albertson's one day.
3. Demo at Best Buy. Personal favorite now.
4. Never heard of it.
5. Never heard of it.
6. Never heard of it.
I recently got 7 on my DS. As fun as ever, and with some futuristic enemies.
There are a few I haven't checked out, though...
***** Why weren't those on the Anthology collection? I wanna try 'em!
***** Indeed.
TO EBAY!!!!!!!!!
it makes me sad that there hasnt been any new main Metal Slug games in the past 7 years :(
(I am not counting the Re-release of XX on the 360 because thats a remake)
Ah Metal Slug Anthology, best buy on the PSP ever, fun with another friend, load times are long, but fun nevertheless...
Metal Slug 1-3 are available for current consoles and on Steam too.
3:30 hearing nerds make fun of how nerds talk by other nerds is priceless.
OMG I FRIGGIN LOVE METAL SLUG!!!!!!
Metal Slug is AWESOME!!!
ImI Metal Slug 3 Its fucking AWESOME ¡¡
That joystick pad clicking sound is oddly soothing.
ASMR
Actually Mike, Big Ben is the bell inside the clock tower. From someone from London, born and raised
In late 90's I bought a Sega Saturn just so I could buy Metal Slug and Marvel vs. Street Fighter on import. Some of the best 2 player 2D gaming ever! Love this stuff!
I absolutely love you guys played Metal Slug using those controllers! The sound those things make is music to my ears for some reason! I'm gonna have to play that game now thanks to you two! :) Thanks for keeping up the great work, James & Mike!!
Actually it's funny that he mentions spending quarters in the arcade, I was once at a laundry mat many years ago that had the Neo Geo arcade machine, and I guess this kids mom or dad worked there because hence it being a laundry mat the kid had an endless supply of quarters to keep him entertained and trust me this game ate up quarters like pac-man eating pac-dots.
3:30 mark, Mike does some fudging hilarious impersonations, ahaha!!! I remember him doing that in the past, he should keep at it, more impersonations in videos!!!
It's actually an impression of Conan O'brien doing an impression of his nerdy fans. I know Mike is a fan of Conan so that's pretty cool.
videogameobsession I shall create a video where I impersonate Mike impersonating Conan impersonating his nerdy fans. I will be crowned king and ruler of cyberspace.
Hehe. Go for it man. :) but what if someone impersonates you, then what?!
Then I shall impersonate the person who impersonated him impersonating Mike impersonating Conan impersonating his fans!!
TheLeatherRebel
Hehe. Go for it man. :) but what if someone impersonates you, then what?!
i remember playing this at the arcade. but i got it on my wii vitual console and love it so much
Awesome video and am I the only one that loves the sound of those buttons? lol.
Nope, me too!
Cool. :D
The GG Allin reference came out of nowhere and I appreciate. Too funny
Great one, fellas! Me and my brother used to rock this game out in the arcades as kids, one of my fave shoot 'em ups growing up!
the 3rd metal slug blows my mind even today. That game is huge!
MASSIVE STORY! The last mission alone could have been spread out into THREE OTHER MISSIONS. That's how long it is.
Fantastic back then, fantastic now.
The graphics hold up absurdly well.
Mike had a Bugs Bunny moment
Oh man.. I've ALWAYS wanted a Neo Geo AES or the cd version since a teen..
Nice. Metal Slug still has one of the best animated 2D graphics. Im pissed, why today developers dont take that awesome HD resolution and make a kick-ass 2D side scroller. Something like The King of Fighters XIII graphics. I mean true 2D, no stupid 3D characters in 2D scroller.
Well, Hard Corps Uprising was really good and had great graphics. I can't think of other good 2D shooters in HD, but yeah Metal Slug HD would be pretty damn awesome.
Intrusion 2.
IamCombustible
Looks pretty good! Too bad it's PC only. My PC can't run shit.
IamCombustible Yeah...Intrusion is great. I agree.
Zatracenec
Because currently, people who like 2d sidescrollers/shoot-em-up are just the minority. The only sidescroller games that I know that are recently released by a giant company are Mario and Rayman, others are indie titles.
You guys sure did pwn those bad guys. Awesomely rad.
If you played the AES (Cartridge system), the games give you 4 credits. Fun fact: The Neo CD, is notorious for slow loading times. SNK then released the CDZ, which was faster, but had a tendency to heat up quickly. All consoles required a memory card, if you wanted to save data.
...and I have a friend who owns all Neo-Geo home systems, as well as an MVS arcade system.
fun fact, fighting games are rough to play on it.. some are worse than others with the loading.... but space shooters and metal slug type games are alright since there aren't many load screens.. magician lord doesn't load almost at all except at the start for example.. but you play samurai showdown.... I think in one match you got 3 loading screens that are like 40 seconds long each. the cdz isn't much faster, it's only a bit better.. a game might be 30 seconds instead of 45 or something negligible like that. Also the neo geo cd doesn't require a memory card.. there is no slot for one at all.. the mvs and aes has that though.
MrDebauch
Shit, you're right about the memory card. Touche, my friend.
also it's worth mentioning that owning a neo geo cd is great even if you already have an aes or mvs... because there are a couple of exclusives.. and let's not mention the burning.
MrDebauch
The Arranged soundtracks are what really hooked me to the Neo-CD. The added feature of being compatible with other Neo-geo controllers was an added bonus.
Big ben is the bell, Elizabeth Tower is the tower. Yay wiki!!! lol
And the building is called the Westminster Palace. And the tower didn't have a separate name until 2012. I had to check the wiki too because I had never heard the tower being named -- figures that it was so recent.
Awesome video guys. MS has epic music btw!
agreed ^_^
Its funny to see how north america in general is not familiar with SNK games. Here in Brazil, SNK had their own office/localization team (just like Capcom), and we were spammed by a LOT of arcade machines featuring all King of Fighters, Metal Slugs, Art of Fighting, Double Dragon games at the same time they were released in Japan.
So, its kinda strange to see you guys comparing the game with Contra so much, since in most parts of the world (pretty much south america and asia in general), we were more exposed to SNK games than Nintendo 8bits ones.
That explains why I always seem to mostly find KoF videos of BR players.
***** I dont know how is the "scene" today. Nowadays you only see arcades on malls and on a few hidden places. Also, most people who used to play in the 90's and early '00 stopped playing on KOF 2002. Some still uses Winkawaks emulator, since it uses the GGPO netcode for multiplayer.
Its a shame that SNK became a small company today, I'd like to see a big KOF game made like SF4, but its comprehensive that this probably not gonna happen.
***** I was excited when KOF13 went to Steam. But sadly, the netcode is still bad and not a lot of people play it.
They didn't use a single grenade.
They used 2 for nothing. :)
at 2:24 they did
Yeahh...A must for bosses. They must of been thinking they're playing Contra the whole time. Only 2 buttons.
Best.Arcade.Game.Series.Ever.
This game is in the SNK Greatest Hits for the PS2. SNK always made some great games, but most of their games were overlooked by either a Capcom or Street Fighter game. Another great 2-op games that they (SNK) made was Ikari Warriors. That was the game to play before Contra made it into the arcades. Metal Slugs reminds me alot of Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis--another underrated run -and-gun game from back-in-the-day.
the reason why a bunch of SNK games were overlooked is because SNK made consoles but they were very pricey because they were basically home arcades, and on top of the console price people had to buy the games. Nintendo, Sega, Atari were already big names so people didn't really buy NeoGeo and just bought the bigger named consoles.
Some Arcades actually had the Neo Geo Machines, that features about 10 games that were available for the console at the time. The reason why the games were so expensive are because the cartridges were basically the same components that were in the actual machine. Great Games, but yes too expensive for the average gamer to buy for their own. About 20 years after the Neo Geo, I was lucky to come across the same games for the PS2 for $10.00. LOL!!
Did you just say that Metal Slug and Ikari Warriors were overlooked? What?
*Entire building flashes orange when shot*
"Everything's gonna blow up, I can tell."
Very astute, James.
HELL YEAH! METAL SLUG! The nostalgia's coming back at me.
Metal Slug series is legend. Best game series ever.
3:33 Mike just impersonated Bugs Bunny. What a Chad.
Being a button or joystick is pretty hard work
I'm so glad you guys played this game! When I was a kid I bought as many gaming magazines as I could and I remember being so facinated with the Neo Geo and Neo Geo CD, and Metal Slug was the main game that caught my eye. I thought it looked amazing and gave me that giddy feeling that only a child can get from seeing a game he wants to play but knows isn't likely to be able to. I remember looking in the back of one of the magazines where it showed several consoles with their prices listed next to them and the Neo Geo I think went for $700 or so.
I love these episodes guys, can't wait to see you play Contra with no code. I do believe you will succeed, though.
Metal slug is a childhood memory of mine I remember playing it on the arcade at a Pizza Hut every weekend.ahhh the memories and now I have all of them on my laptop
i love that button sounds
Do a Top 10 Most Delayed Ducking Animations in video games, or a Top 10 Worst Hit Detection in Video Games.
Or the Top 10 Pointless Videos to Waste Time On Instead of Completing the AVGN Movie
But, but... Dr. Jeckyl and Hyde wins every category!
xMartyZz exactly
Mikerulez101
Oh where is your motion picture that you're producing/directing/filming/writing/budgeting/editing and making worth while to watch? It's so easy and fast to do it why don't I see so many awesome movies on your channel?.....lol Keep covering Goo Goo Dolls and don't worry about what other people are completing.
xAngoryx No need to get Angory at me
I love Metal Slug!
I loved that you guys soft reseted the NeoGeo CD twice before and still had no idea what happened. Haha.
What this videos audio consists of: 10% game, 20% commentary, 70% KLICKLACKKLICKLACK
had the opportunity to buy the metal slug collection for ps2 i found in the extra cheap section where all the games no one wants all bundled together
i wish i bought it..... unfortunately it was bnack to school sale day and had to "worry" more about school
I really want to see you guys try out Contra: Hard Corps.
We robots adore you, James and Mike. However, we think that this game has a very misleading title. We were expecting a game about metallic gastropods that kill millions of French people when eaten.
Here in Italy Metal Slug is probably the most famous arcade, every kids back in the '90 played at least one time to one chapter of the franchise
Wooow. I used to play this in arcade when I was a lil kid, after I stopped going there I totally forgot till now. Wow nostalgia hit me, Im gona download it and play it again!
I used to play this shit a lot on MAME ! Great games !
i still do from time to time, never get bored of this series
I've played this game on arcades and then on PlayStation.
7:20 Mike fails at the Contra code. You're no gamer.
i thought that sounded wrong....
wait... so you never played metal slug? I THOUGHT YOU WERE REAL GAMERS!!!
metal slug is seriuos epic shit!!!
It's a shame they don't seem to be too familiar with Metal Slug. Even though Contra was the first shmup game I've played along with Gradius, Metal Slug is the reason why I've become a gamer. It's the perfect blend of gameplay and fun. Cool weapons with ammo count and grenades, detailed environments and enemies, rocking music and fun boss fights (I personally think the bosses in MS are superior than Contra artistic-wise). It's THE arcade game of my childhood. I kinda hope they give it more chance.
I still play the Metal Slug collection on PS2 from time to time. I wish they also port it on PS3.
3:33 LOL MIke's voice is priceless
I never even knew there was a Neo Geo CD. I wonder how expensive those games were.
casual
Actually the Neo Geo CD sold so incredibly poorly that the console and it's game are incredibly cheap. It's a nice alternative to collecting for the original AES, especially considering how ridiculous the prices for the games are. The unfortunate trade off is extremely long loading times
donpfeff The Retail price of the system was $250, and the CD-ROMs sold from $50 to $70.
Much cheaper than the Neo Geo carts, but a little slower and with arranged soundtracks for the games.
***** But enough for these games, you know, 100mega power+. They even decided, if neo geo cd will be cd or 1gig cartridges.
Metal slug is hands down probably one of the best games ever made that is also super underrated. I'm surprised how many people don't know about this game because the Neo Geo didn't get as much fame as Nintendo or any other stuff around at the same time. In my honest opinion, Metal Slug 1, 2, X, and 3 were probably the "good" ones. They were just started going some weird direction after the 4th one...(x is a remake of 2 by the way) I remember as a kid I would go to arcade with 2 x 100 Won(equivalent of american quarter, but each are 100) so I have 2 continue credits. I always made to the 4th level at least on Metal Slug 2. I believe it's the level where you start to get fat... oh the good ol' memory :)
O-OH! BIG!
My favorite side scrolling shoot em up franchise, whenever I'm bored playing anything, I always go back to any metal slug games, never let me down
The konami code is so useful in so many games. Especially if you remember the slight variations used in arcades. Class of 1981 arcade cabinets you can find EVERYWHERE, with Ms Pac-Man and Galaga, have original Pac-Man hidden on them with uuudddlrlr, for instance
The konami code has variations in the Metal Gear games.
Back when this was new, the graphics were *insane*... but then again so was the price.
Metal Slug 3 coming to Steam in February! HOLY SHIT
And then you have to wait for Metal Slug 4, 5 ,6, X, 7 and so on i guess?
metal slug anthology is the one u need
***** Let's just be glad we're getting something, yeah?
***** That's the one i got! =D
You two should have a let's play channel! That would be incredible!! :D
Can't wait for next week!!!
Awesome video this one!
It's the Elizabeth Tower, by the way. I am happy that you guys picked up on that though!
