Making an 18th Century Bergere from a $1 Hat

- It's time for another budget costuming hack! This time, I am making an 18th century bergere hat from a $1 Dollar Tree sunhat. It took some experimenting, but I did manage to make something work!
In the future, I am definitely going to add some millinery wire to the edge of the brim to help keep it from being so floppy, and I'll eventually get around to trimming it, too.

Thank you for the adventure!
Your many trials and tribulations paid off in the end! It looks adorable!
An excellent journey. Ups...downs...twists to the story...and a happy ending. Thanks for sharing! Take care.
I just finished sewing my own straw hat and faced many of the same issues you did. Wish I had seen this first! Great job on the hat!
Fantastic hat. I really appreciate you including all the ups and downs of this project journey with us. All the lessons learnt along the way.
I hope you'll share the decorated version in the future : )
Kitties are helpinggggggggggggg.
Vee Dragon Kitties love to help!
I just measured and cut around the middle of the crown and then set the top down on the brim, then tacked the two layers together. You will have two layers the side of the crown, but it gives more body.
Why didn’t you just use the cat to flatten the crown? Your white and black kitty looked so comfy! Your cats are beautiful. 🎩 🐈
i soaked my hat in hot water to try and remove the shape, but the iron idea sounds so much easier
Great effort, but the hat is too small. Always measure three times before cutting. But I applaud your idea.
The only real problem with converting a plastic hat is that it will be awfully sweaty!
As not manly as possible is a good goal :)
