Thank God for people like Daniel Lanois. In today's world of profit driven 'arts' he is a breath of fresh air. I love all of his music and value/share his opinions about life and art.
I first saw him on NPR with Trixey Whitely. I was blown away by his playing...and how he glued himself so immersively to accompanying her. Never seen such focus before.
December 23, 1986 saw Daniel debut his Acadie album at a small club in Hamilton on Barton street. One of the most memorable nights of my life and have followed him ever since then.
Daniel Lanois has worked with Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, U2, Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan, The Neville Brothers, Ron Sexsmith, Emmy Lou Harris, Willy Nelson, Sinned O'Conner, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Leonard Cohen. The man is a walking history of modern music.
I have loved Daniels work as a musician and producer, Nevill Brothers for me their best LP Yellow Moon. Then Dylan's great fifth come- back LP, and Emilou. We were lucky enough to see the tour Emilou did to promote the 'Wrecking ball' album. Willie Nelson 'Teatro' CD. Daniel makes GREAT music himself but his audio senses as a producer make other artists sound GREAT. Love your art Mr Lanois.
hazor777 we live in amazing times where we can Shazam a song instantly or possibly read a wonderful comment like yours on UA-cam. Thank you so much for the recommendation! Exceptional!
How about Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy!" Langois had his ideas all over it. Just listen to the studio version of "The Man In The Long Black Coat" The atmosphere in that song (and the whole album) is incredible and it's all because of Langois. I love Daniel's album "La Cadie" (also fantastic atmosphere).
@@dougfielding8215 Well, I have never listened to that particular album , but I'll make a note of it. There was a relatively "known" (or you may say "unknown") artist via name of CHRIS WHITLEY. When I say "ARTIST" , this man EMBODIED that very word , head to toe. Amazing guitar player, songwriter , IMO:singer etc. Sadly he passed away in early 2K's. Lanois produced his first album, which is very, very good - and his most successful for his short career. Ironically, Chris Whitley was more about being an artist than a success and forewent any plans to record for a major label or w/ a major producer after that album. I highly recommend checking out Chris Whitley's first 5 albums - in succession ...... amazing work.
I loved the interview until the very end. Super genius. Nothing referential until the 60s. Dude, what. Can someone explain what he meant? Music is eternal.
Excellent Q + A with one of my faves. Does anyone know which song they are discussing re. Brian Blade's synthesized Bass Drum? # nice to hear some respect for L'il Wayne.
Banff, Daniel may already know, but let him know about console from Abbey Road album is being sold. Tell him Char said, “Go for it!” & tell Tammy I said, “Hello” & hope all is well. ❤
Nowadays most DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations) can take audio and render it as MIDI. Once on a MIDI track, you could easily take any sound and reprogram it to do as he mentioned. His method was a little more old school, and he could likely have the same results in a quarter of the time. The most recent example (in a Mac environment) that I have been fooling around with is Logic Pro X. Alternatively, you could sample the drum kick into a sampler (many powerful programs to choose from) and manipulate the pitch by retuning it in the samples. Then you could play various touch pads or keyboard keys, which have their own pitch per key assigned. Cheers!
I use a bus of the kick drum track to a sound generator in pro tools and then make that into an 808 and you can do that as many times as you want for each pitch
Dylan and Young taught him a thing or two- it's a sales pitch to draw you into the tent." ...mic'ing Bono with giant speakers..." the fellow doing the interview is adrift.
ONE D'addario string ??????? G........ mixed brand set ??????? i WISH Daniel would pick one "nobody" to help..... Please, Daniel pick me..... please....... either You or Todd..... my heros ! yes at 38:00, on......!!!!
I think he is a bit tired here....he is working very hard. I talk to him most every week. He is strong. I am an old girlfriend Damon, who some sort of never have stopped loving. I am glad you treasure him. I can assure you he is worthy !
Dominic Girard is the perfect interviewer for the delicate understating of Lanois' artistry. He knows how to listen, and never once allows his own ego to intrude on Lanois' introspective revelations. He, like Gerald Moore, is the perfect accompanist. This is a capital interview.
Well said - music was never a background as far as I'm concerned - when I'm listening to music, then I'm 100% dedicated to it. I also never work with music in my ears, otherwise I can't focus on my work as I focus on music more.

Informed interviewer. Good questions relaxed space. Lanois is brilliant.
All those accomplishments and he's totally down to earth. A real pleasure to hear his thoughts on music.

I believe that was the Double Rinks,( Dallas), in the east end.
1989

I could listen all day to Daniel talk about his music and I can spend all light listening to his music as well.
Couldn't agree more!
I have done that. It never gets boring. Being an old friend.
From what I have read of him , he is very shy and I think it shows inb this interview ... the reluctant star
In the top 10 most influential people in modern music, no doubt... and a beautiful human, to boot.
Daniel is truly one of the greatest Canadians and his Grant Avenue Studio put Hamilton on the map.
So proud to be from his neck of the woods..the man is brilliant and full of creativity.
This guy is the real deal...
HomeGrown Musical Genius! Thank you Daniel for all your musical poetry-
If you’re looking someone to demystify the process, and understand what often creates magic, he’s your helper.
Hard work.
A gentle spirit. Totally agree about restaurant music! 17:45
As a Hamiltonian, I am grateful for his efforts and his putting my city on the map!
Very inspiring interview for home producing.
Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts, Daniel!

Fantastic but did I miss the Bob Dylan and Neil Young references??
Daniel is playing guitar on every song on The Joshua Tree
Greatest album he ever produced was Robbie Robertson's first album - highly recommended .

Love that Man!

Ridiculous talent, and he captured the gamers of the world with the RDR2 soundtrack 👏👏

Great stuff
Great. But where is the Dylan and Youg talk????
The interviewer just read Daniel’s bio that morning
Cue cards? A real pro interviewer.
Daniel is playing guitar on every song on U2 Joshua Tree album
Btw-let D.L. know ‘twas moi that talked to Rocco & linked D.L. to STL’s Blueberry Hill
“…no particular place to go..” Chuck Berry
You missed one of his most special collaborations and albums, “Wrecking Ball” with Emmylou Harris.
Bad interviewer or good interviewer ... Daniel always pulling a excellent interview. Smart smart man.
Wish to find the Brian Blade piece that he speaks of at 25m
Sioux Lookout
@@pablotoscano06 i was curious too-- thanks.
I didn't hear a thing about what working with Bob Dylan and Neil Young taught Daniel Lanois....
At 24:35 he goes on to mention software to recreate the same bass drum, what kinda program could this be done with?

What a guy....
That conclution is wrong you cannot see to the future from a vacuum you have to build upon the past
1 foot in front of the other just keep marching Daniel
5:30 better methods makes thing easier
Born in Quebec, but he's definitely from Hamilton!
I WISH THERE WAS A UA-cam FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY...MINUS ALL OF THE NONSENSE.
Daniel your the man
lil wayne? 🤔🤔🤔
Thumbs DOWN! Very misleading title considering that working Dylan/Young was not talked about at all during the whole interview!

I sure hope Daniel is well health-wise...He just doesn't look well at this interview.
I think he looks beautiful ! And I have known him for 27 years.
toneseeland Well...I will defer to you on this one, he is such a treasure, and I wish the absolute best for your friend Daniel...and his family!!
I think he's just shy here. I could be wrong.

Just a click-bait title.
