100 years after its founding, it would seem the Bauhaus is alive and well as the whole world works on updating it. But given the ubiquitous profusion of design, perhaps its absence could be seen as a liberating moment. The time has come to take our leave of the Bauhaus in order to face the challenges of the present without bias. For five years, projekt bauhaus has undertaken a critical inventory of the Bauhaus’ ideas, reassessing its utopian excesses, its immanent contradictions, and its potential for the present.
To celebrate the completion of projekt bauhaus, director and musician Musiker Schorsch Kamerun will stage the premiere of Das Bauhaus - ein rettendes Requiem (AT). Held during the anniversary year, the event will be a feisty farewell party in the form of a large concertante funeral.
Three weeks before the premiere, projekt bauhaus invites everyone to join in lectures, discussions, and performances at the Grüner Salon as part of the event Ciao Bauhaus! This event aims to address the Bauhaus’ contemporary social relevance at a time when the idea of the Bauhaus seems to have become little but an empty word that almost anything can be projected onto. Is the idea of the Bauhaus really still alive? Did the major movements of the recent past actually draw their impetus from it? Which ideas are still effective today, and are they relevant for the future? And which ideas should we just bid farewell?
A cooperation between projekt bauhaus and the Volksbühne Berlin. projekt bauhaus is a project by the ARCH+ Verein zur Förderung des Architektur- und Stadtdiskurses e.V.
Artistic direction projekt bauhaus: Jesko Fezer, Christian Hiller, Anh-Linh Ngo, Philipp Oswalt, Joanne Pouzenc, Jan Wenzel, Project management: Katja Szymczak
projekt bauhaus is funded by the Bauhaus heute Fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, the Ernst Schering Foundation and the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
