Roland GK-3B Divided MIDI Pickup installed on a Jazz bass - Jack's Instrument Services

  • Phil France from The Cinematic Orchestra dropped off his Jazz bass for me to install and tune up his new GK-3B divided bass guitar MIDI pickup. The pickup once installed converts each string's vibration into a signal which is sent through the 13 pin cable to the controller. In this case Phil has bought a Roland GR-20. The GR-20 can then output a MIDI signal from many many more capabilities.
    Hook this MIDI signal up to a computer and you could play any soft synth or sample through it. You can do all sorts with midi - control lighting or launch fireworks!
    The in built sounds in the GR-20 are a bit dated really... In this video i'm mostly messing around with some of the squelchy sounds it can make...!

    Here we are in 2022 and I think this is STILL amazing. I am not a techy guy, so I have no idea if this kind of thing is available on Garageband, but still... AMAZING !!!!!

    I have GK-3 two times (two upgraded guitars) and last week I´ve bought GK-3B for my basses. Synths - GR-20 and GR-33. We´ ll have a lot of fun.

    Hearing that DX7 bass at 1:20 makes me want to put one of these on a bass of mine. I just wish I could have a plate made to stick the pickup on, and then be able to use the screw holes from the bridge cover, rather than drill new holes on my '74 Precision. The pickguard on mine is a mess anyway, I'll make another one to be able to have the jack on there instead of more drilling.

    Super , the very close Yamaha DX7 sound at 1:20(to 1:23) is a GR20 internal preset ? or the GR20 is connected to an external synth or rack ??

    This vid shows the g20 tracking much better than I ever got it to track. Was the sound 'adjusted' in post production?

    This video inspired me to get these units. After updating the unit to accept bass and troubleshooting with the pickup, sensitivity, and play feel i am finding that the gr-20 or the gk3b is having trouble tracking accurately. If I use a pick it does not pick up well at all for quick picking. Any input / wisdon would be amazing, thanks!

    How are you getting low latency with this setup?! It was my understanding that bass doesn't track well on the lower strings unless you're playing in the upper register. I have a GK-3B PUP on one of my basses, and the only way it's useable is having the bass strung up with piccolo strings.

    • @gamesforone4105
      @gamesforone4105 6 років тому +2

      In my experience, the GK-3B doesn't track well on lower strings. It is difficult to set both the action and the string height above the GK pickup optimally for every position on the neck. If I set the string height too low, I get all sorts of multiple triggering when the string is hit hard as the string slaps the GK pickup. I don't really recommend the GK-3B. I think a piezo pickup built-in to the bridge has to be better?? Or check out the FretTraX system.

    • @StevenHoste
      @StevenHoste 8 років тому +2

      Guess that's not correct: GK3B has an output for 13 pin cable, not MIDI or USB. The GR-20 has a midi out that could be connected to another MIDI device or computer with MIDI connection

    Hello there, hope u can give me some advise. I bought the GK-3B from a friend (never opened) and attached it to a bass gtr and I still have my GR Gtr Synth (GR-20) same as your demo but I cannot get any sound unless I play high on the bass neck. Does the GK3B pickup has to be near the bridge or can it be between the pickups as it is now (easy to change as I have not screwed it in as yet) - any advise would be appreciated. Cheers

    • @gamesforone4105
      @gamesforone4105 6 років тому +1

      You have to make sure the clearance between the string and the pickup is no more than about 1 mm. If the string is too high, it won't trigger. If the string is too low, then it can slap the pickup and double- and triple-trigger. It is really a difficult balancing act especially if you have to adjust the string height for fret noise. Also, I found the GK-3B is just horrible with the GR-55. I tried all the settings of the GR-55 and could not get decent tracking at any position on the neck.

    • @alexortega8444
      @alexortega8444 4 роки тому +2

      The owner's manual marks a 1.5 mm distance between the pickup and tje string

    Any comments on how I can get faster/better analog to midi conversion and much less latency problems. Is there settings on each patch that will help or do I need to make a setting adjustment on the systems tab? Thanks

    • @lawrencegenereux8567
      @lawrencegenereux8567 7 років тому

      John Kam Latency is a fact of life with low frequency analog to MIDI conversion. No setting is going to change that. Sorry. It's why you don't see players using these units on the lower strings.

    • @Mr182Jake
      @Mr182Jake 7 років тому +1

      Thanks Lawrence--at least I know there are not some adjustments on the GR55 that will address latency in a big way--I'll have to listen to Pascal Mulot again with the GR55--especially when he is using MIDI patches--and notice where on the neck he is ---when playing 16th notes--with no severe latency. I use a few procedures like fading in a MIDI patch with foot pedal--to be on right beat--just using MIDi for accents--versus trying to do a riff or complete groove

      yes you can control the sounds in garageband with any midi controller but the sounds in garageband suck. you're better to get a good synthesizer module.
