Exit is a lot easier than entry. A simple framework that's worked for me (most times) is the reversal of fortunes approach. Here's what I mean by that -- When investing in a stock or asset class, you would have identified 3-4 key reasons e.g. valuation is low, momentum is rising, promoters are buying, high growth rates etc. This prompted an entry into the stock. Say, 3 years later you find that many of these points have reversed i.e. - growth has slowed down from 20% to 5% (like what happened with Exide) - valuations became too expensive (like Avenue Supermart) - promoter is selling (like Easy Trip Planners) In such a scenario, an exit is the best course of action. Ofcourse, there is some subjectivity here which is good because entering & exiting is not a simple mathematical problem. It's got a lot of qualitative elements & biases. For example -- I exited Sterlite Technologies after 2 quarters of holding it after I realised the management is changing goal posts too many times & it's not focussed enough in completing existing projects. I sold my holdings there due to lack of confidence in the company's management -- that no screener can help you understand. It requires reading of the transcripts, news, blogs etc. and this approach has worked very well for me so far. What I love most about it is the simplicity of it -- if the reasons for which one entered the stock/asset doesn't exist, then simply exit This same logic, when applied to silver means the exit points are when -- a) there are new sources of supply b) people come up with alternatives to silver in production of solar panels & industrial uses, c) lower gold-silver ratio, d) reduction in manufacturing activity etc. Hope this helps

@@shankarnath okay! 👍🏼 Thank you for replying! ☺️ I didn't understand why investment in digital gold would work for long-term only! 🤔 Would you like through more light on this?
@@saurabhkesharwani6143 Yes, so say you buy digital gold (DG) worth 10000 rupees. There's a small GST of 3%, so you actually receive 9,700. Now assume Gold prices have increased by 10% in an year and you feel like selling. So you DG is now 9,700+970 = 10,670. When you try selling, please notice, there's a 5% buy-sell rate spread (sometimes more). So, when you click on sell you receive 10,670*95% = 10,136. This means what you've actually made is (10,136/10,000) - 1 = 1.36% and what you thought you made is 10%. This problem gets hidden a bit over the long term. So say its 10% return every year for 10 years. Then by the same calculation, it comes to 9,700*1.10^10*95% = 23,901. So ((23,901/10,000)^(1/10))-1 give us an annual return of 9.1% -- which is a lot closer to 10% than the 1.36% we got on a 1 year buy/sell. Hope this clarifies. Just sharing my thoughts - Gold has less industrial value when compared to silver and hence there is no substitute for gold. Silver has industrial usages and if the price goes up, companies can find alternatives which will again lower the demand and price of silver. I feel investing in silver requires great skill and courage to withstand the volatility

Sorry if that's the case, but my point here is a bit different. Many don't know this but FOF expense ratio in reality is it's underlying ETF expense ratio PLUS the FOF expense ratio. That's what I meant by that slide really
@shankarnath Yes, that should be. But when I checked HDFC's ETF and FoF, i found that HDFCSILVER(etf) has expense ratio 0.40% while FoF(direct) as 0.27%. I don't know how it is like that?

Sir, I have a pretty relevant question, I am investing in SIlver ETF since a year and trading too. I am struggling with the taxation part, as they have been changed consecutively in a row and are taxed at slab rates in short term. Although when I see my AIS, all the silver ETF are market as equity oriented mutual funds. And now I am confused where to put them in ITR 2 as they should not be under 111A which is now taxed at 20%. I would really appreciate a reply on this and also, if possible, video. Thanks
@@shankarnath Thanks a lot for the reply and advise. You are really doing great work, and I binged watch you channel since I came to know about it recently. Just whenever you explore this taxation part or read about it, please look into this. Thanks again!
Thank you Shankar for yet another informative video. Woukd you suggest that sell the Silver etf if the Gold-to-Silver ratio is closer to the 60-65 mark?
Hello. Other than what I've explained, please check out the Internet esp. Google search. There are lots of articles/news now on how to invest in silver.
Yes, it is more precious than God. It's also way better than Gold. It looks better, it's better for almost any use. I dont understand the hype on gold although Gold is also Great. I can only think of the scarcity of Gold as being desirable but is it even THAT scarce anymore?
What kind of returns CAGR do you foresee for the next 5 years? That should be the key question before making such investment decision, even in case hedging since there are options. One more concern is always the replacement price. If the prices reach too high, the industry will start looking for alternatives and will therefore act as a ceiling for the prices. There is also some volatility in the EV market itself.
I did come across very optimistic reports on silver but I don't have enough to have a view of silver's performance 5 years from now. Perhaps it's not my approach as I prefer to invest, track quarterly, invest more if signs are promising and go with the flow. It's worked for me so far, so haven't tried the 5-year-forecast approach
@@shankarnath Thank you sir for the detailed reply. I understand your perspective. Most of us tend to have limited funds and cyclical needs of funds so I tend to look at it that way. Also, there is that limited skillset and time issue to reevaluate periodically. Mentors like you therefore are of great value to us, keep it up.
As usual, this video is also quite insightful and to the point. Thanks. Ibhave 2 queries: 1) Considering silver is most volatile asset class, how do you identify the exit point besides gold silver ratios? 2) Considering Trump's apathy towards renewable energy, do you see demand for solar panels and consequenly silver going down?
Thx 1. Exit points are exactly the opposite of entry points. I'll go with this logical argument here so .. a) new sources of supply, b) alternatives to silver in production of solar panels, b) lower gold-silver ratio, d) reduction in manufacturing activity etc. 2. I have no views on this. Speculating with little information is not something that's worked for me, I prefer monitoring information as it comes & react fast to take advantage of it or spare losses
Hi sir. Very insightful videos always. Thanks so much. Waiting for your Smallcase release. Also any mobile app that shows Gold/Silver per gram prices to track them?
Shouldnt gold mortgage loan has less interest rate than person loan and other loans?? Why is it not so?? Gild loan at Muthoot finance is 11% and personal loan is 10.5%.
Personal loans aren't 9% -- can you share which bank is offering at these rates? By my reckoning, the MCLR itself is about 9.1% .. even one were to add a spread of just 1.5% for the grade A+ customer (high income, salaried, reside own house, high CIBIL score, low outstandings), still this will be atleast 10.5%. Generally, PL interest rates range from 10.5% to 16% -- in today's times
@@mathfobia I think the average comes to the same when compared to PLs. The average interest rate for PLs (across all strata of borrowers) and gold loan is the same -- around 12%. As to why gold loan is 12% and not lower, some reasons include: 1. Admin costs of handling gold (storing it, appraising it, hedging cost etc. are all expensive; this is not the case with other secured loans like LAMF for example) 2. Gold prices fluctuate and lenders factor the possibility of a borrower's default. For instance, if the price of gold falls by 20% and you have received 90% of your gold's value -- then you might default leading to a 10% loss (maybe more) for the lender 3. Gold loans are mostly used by people in rural or semi-urban areas who lack access to cheaper credit options. So there might be some skimming off the top by lenders by charging a higher interest rate 4. NBFCs like Muthoot & Manappuram Finance charge higher rates (as compared to banks) to account for quick disbursals and lenient requirements Hope this helps

Amazing video ….i love your research
Thank you! 🙌
Sir can you please make a video on all the terms related to the basics of investing like ETF's, PPF and similar terms also a masterclass on mutual funds explaining all types of funds i.e. mid cap, small cap , large caps, imdex funds etc and also a tax class where how tax can be saved on different aspects of investing. As a newbie I'll help a lot to me and others too .
Thanks for the suggestion. Btw, there are dedicated, detailed videos for most of these points on my channel
Nice 👍 video
Great content & quality
Yes
We are also investing in silver
Thank you. Glad you liked it 🙌
Just sharing my thoughts - Gold has less industrial value when compared to silver and hence there is no substitute for gold. Silver has industrial usages and if the price goes up, companies can find alternatives which will again lower the demand and price of silver. I feel investing in silver requires great skill and courage to withstand the volatility
There’s no substitute without a sacrifice in performance/quality
Nice 👌🏼
Very nice informative video
Thanks a lot 🙌
Thank you for your explanation. Its an exquisite video like always.
So nice of you. Most welcome!
Had queries about silver ETF.
I did purchase silverbees for some amount this dhanteras.
what is the alternative of silver ?
Great video sir. Do you have thoughts on securing small portion of physical silver for emergency situations?
Thanks. I haven't thought of it.
Thanks.Appreciate your Presentation
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative video. Thank you Sir.
So nice of you. You're most welcome 🙌
Good content!
Thanks!
which index should we track for Silver in tradingview to get an idea about entry in silverbees ? can it be silverfutures on mcx ?
US$/oz can be tracked for silver prices
Which company's silver etf is good
Thank you, Sir, for this wonderful video as usual. Your content is of high quality with great inputs. what I like to understand is, if somebody wants to buy silver ETF, kindly let us know what would be the time frame of the chart, If somebody is going to buy it for maybe 10 years then the time frame would be a weekly or monthly chart. Secondly, also, let me know What would be the moving average whether it will be 20/50/100/200 moving average to maintain the risk-to-reward ratio I am looking for your response. Thank you. Wish you all the best.
Thank you Sir, beautifully explained.
You are most welcome 🙌 So nice of you
Kudos for giving such well researched contents. What’s your view on selling silver coins/bars at a later time for cash? Do jewellers buy back silver?
Thank you! I've never tried silver coins and bullion, won't be right of me to comment. Sorry!
Thank u sir for this valuable and very informative video.
So nice of you. Most welcome 🤗
Silver price hasn't seen much growth compared to gold if you see last 10-12 years rates. It could be a temporary spike.
Yes, you are right. There's nothing permanent in investing -- it's always about temporary spikes & temporary falls. A lot of money is made in these rises & declines
I think the expense ratios you provided for FOFs are of the Regular plan. Direct plan FOFs have lower TER.
@@speedychital Exactly what I said. HDFC Silver ETF FOF actual expenses are 0.40% + 0.27%
@@shankarnath Oh! Thanks for clarifying that. That's somewhat shady and hidden. Thanks again!
Cam we opt for a multi asset fund instead of directly buying these etfs?
There's no guarantee of what the fund manager will do (in terms of allocation) in a multi-asset fund. Please review a few multi-asset schemes before you make up your mind
What about platinum?
Where to sell when price increases
Dear sir, thank you for creating such valuable and resourceful content for us. Your contents are so much informative and to the point. We are blessed to have your guidance. Could you please explain difference between fof and mutual fund? which one we should opt for considering different cost ratio?
Thank you very much. I've explained FOF (fund of fund) in another video. Pls check point 7 in ua-cam.com/video/VDzDIApFmw4/v-deo.html
Your views are 100% correct
Sir, I have a pretty relevant question, I am investing in SIlver ETF since a year and trading too. I am struggling with the taxation part, as they have been changed consecutively in a row and are taxed at slab rates in short term. Although when I see my AIS, all the silver ETF are market as equity oriented mutual funds. And now I am confused where to put them in ITR 2 as they should not be under 111A which is now taxed at 20%. I would really appreciate a reply on this and also, if possible, video. Thanks
Sorry Manan ji, I'm really bad at taxes. It's better to consult your CA or tax consultant on the same. They'll know this a lot better than me.
@@shankarnath Thanks a lot for the reply and advise. You are really doing great work, and I binged watch you channel since I came to know about it recently. Just whenever you explore this taxation part or read about it, please look into this. Thanks again!
@@mananjain9536 Thank you very much! Glad you liked my work
As usual excellent analysis... It would be better if you start creating a community...
Thank you! Glad you like it
Sir is it best time to buy gold
Which silver fund did you buy ?
The ETF by ICICI Prudential .. SILVERIETF
V. Good analysis
Thank you!
Thank you Shankar for yet another informative video. Woukd you suggest that sell the Silver etf if the Gold-to-Silver ratio is closer to the 60-65 mark?
Most welcome. For specific investment advice/suggestion, request you to kindly consult a financial advisor
Will do. Thanks.
Sir how to invest in silver? ETF or Buying silver please let me know
Hello. Other than what I've explained, please check out the Internet esp. Google search. There are lots of articles/news now on how to invest in silver.
Silver can be very profitable sometimes. I once made about 200 usd in a day but other times it’s mostly very slow da
Thanks. Ibhave 2 queries:
1) Considering silver is most volatile asset class, how do you identify the exit point besides gold silver ratios?
2) Considering Trump's apathy towards renewable energy, do you see demand for solar panels and consequenly silver going down?
Thx
Thanks
Sir, Thanks for Very Informative Video 🙂
Could you suggest which ETF (Icici/Nippon) will be better ?
Most welcome. I find both of them equally good. I generally tip it to IETF as I prefer IPru over Nippon. But other than that, it's all the same
Also, IETF has lower Expense Ratio, does not make a huge difference, but still.
SOvergien Silver Bond , I will go for it! Already a SGB holder
Very nice video sir
Thanks!
Hi sir. Very insightful videos always. Thanks so much. Waiting for your Smallcase release. Also any mobile app that shows Gold/Silver per gram prices to track them?
Thank you. Sorry, I'm not aware of any mobile app. I generally use Google search to get these prices
@shankarnath sorry my mistake. Yes they are around 10.5%. But why is gold loans costlier than personal loans??
@@mathfobia I think the average comes to the same when compared to PLs. The average interest rate for PLs (across all strata of borrowers) and gold loan is the same -- around 12%.
As to why gold loan is 12% and not lower, some reasons include:
1. Admin costs of handling gold (storing it, appraising it, hedging cost etc. are all expensive; this is not the case with other secured loans like LAMF for example)
2. Gold prices fluctuate and lenders factor the possibility of a borrower's default. For instance, if the price of gold falls by 20% and you have received 90% of your gold's value -- then you might default leading to a 10% loss (maybe more) for the lender
3. Gold loans are mostly used by people in rural or semi-urban areas who lack access to cheaper credit options. So there might be some skimming off the top by lenders by charging a higher interest rate
4. NBFCs like Muthoot & Manappuram Finance charge higher rates (as compared to banks) to account for quick disbursals and lenient requirements
Hope this helps

Do you support physical gold and silver? I have been considering 10% of portfolio in gold and silver.
Support is a politician's word -- I don't take sides. But to clarify, I don't have physical gold or silver in my portfolio. ETFs and MFs only
@shankarnath okay. I just bought 3% of my portfolio value as physical gold biscuit lol
Gold & silver bees is good for long term investment kindly suggest me sir
will use of silver in industries make it next aluminium?
Shankar great video, i always learn something new from your video. Whats your take on Raymond lifestyle after the disappointing results.
Thanks! With re: Raymond, for me -- it doesn't do anything to the investing thesis. There's an 3 year carpet until FY27 .. 11 quarters to be precise. Personally, I don't evaluate companies on a single quarter's performance; red flags are raised only when a business is consistently inconsistent or downhill
@shankarnath thank you for being consistent in ur replies too. I agree to your point one quarter does not change quality of a company, also as investors we should be waiting to latch on to such scenarios. I had already invested raymond lifestyle after I read your newsletter and i did my research. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video. I’m curious to know how you filter silver etf alone from NSE. Can you pls say about it ?
Sorry, I didn't understand. Can you please detail the "filter ETFs" part?
@@shankarnath You have shown all silver etfs from nse website. Normally when I search for etf , nse shows all categories of etf ( nifty 50, next 50, gold, silver etc ).How to get/filter out only silver etf ?
@@jasheerali 30 second method
1. Download CSV file (link is on that webpage itself)
2. Where it says "Underlying Asset", apply filter with word "Silver"
That's it
@ great. Thanks
Silver is Gold on steroids. Silver's price action can go unimaginably wild. This is why it has become a goto metal right now. Gold to silver ratio now is at 1 : 87.
Silver is useless. Gold is still the best
Insightful as usual
Thank you!
You are just talking about last one year ....in the last 10 years gold has outshone silver....it's because gold rate has increased over the past year, that people are resorting to silver
Yes, you're right. I'm ignoring the historical 10 years of gold bull-run and leaning on what seems the more undervalued metal that can make me more money.
Please update on SGB, any upcoming new issue?
There's no new issue that RBI has announced this year. On the contrary, RBI has announced premature redemption of issues between 2017-2020
We bought both Gold and Silver
