Tom hasn't played a Gears game, so he wouldn't understand. But in the video game, you're bound to take a couple of hits just moving from cover to cover. So I think discarding "life" to perform an action makes a lot of sense, thematically.
I"m eight years late but I totally agree with this perspective, loved the video game and love board games. It made sense thematically because I don't recall a time I didn't get lit up moving from cover to cover. Heck half the game you had to blind shoot from cover to avoid fire
I absolutely love this game, even though I don't care for the source material. The AI deck is an ingenious design, there's always something coming for you, it forces you to play aggressively, it's difficult... This is a game for the "hardcore gamer," where everything you do carries strong negatives, but you've got to do something to advance. I've won maybe 1/3 - 1/4 of the games I play, but I love that challenge.
I love the dice tower. I've been watching it for 2 years now (living in germany, not even beeing able to get all the games reviewed) BUT I am actually a little flattered by your description of Gears of War ;). Calling it a Doom-clone does not do it justice. It's cover-system was something completly new and the universe in which it takes place is very well fleshed out.
Am I the only one annoyed by the dumping of all the game contents everywhere? I don't knew weather you buy the games yourself or sponsored, but respect the games!
any advice for a D and D type game. RPG board game where we can level up players but not have a dungeon master/ make up a campaign? Used to play Necromunda back in the day
You are right Mr Vasel, one of the requirements to fully enjoy the GoW board game is to actually have enjoyed one of the video games in the trilogy. The biggest achievement that Mr Konieczka and co have made is to capture the atmosphere and some of the gameplay of the series. When we play it, there's GoW music and we speak as if we swallowed a bucket of nails, but the atmosphere is there and so is the fun factor. I guess everything can be good or bad depending on the mood and perception.
you are very right about the games feel. I've played it solo and had a great time though. the idea of losing cards as health works in the same fashion as the video game. when you get shot you start blacking out and slowing down but when you get in cover your health comes back. so you cant run in like you would in doom. in and out tactics are needed and once that clicks its a lot more fun.
This video actually piqued my interest in this game. I'm not a fan of FPS games, usually I go for a story driven game. On the other hand I love science fiction (not exclusively space, just science fiction). And even though there were some partly negative thoughts, I really got into wanting this game even though it's not that popular. I played GoW, but this is completely different, reminds me a bit of fallout tactical style of fighting (Fallout 1 and 2). Not to mention cards as representing health as combination of stamina and HP, the more tired you get, the more wounds affect you, sounds really great to me. So I'm really glad for this video. Thanks.
Best part of the game however is the one thing that bugs me about descent. The fact that the monsters get to move after each player, this prevents the 4 players from just cleaning up the board in one go which often happens in Descent. It also makes the game easier to balance since no matter if you are 1, 2, 3 or 4 players the monsters get the same ammout of activity.
@muk83 Ravenloft, is not trying to emulate a shooter. None of the complaints apply to Ravenloft, the monsters turn are broken between each players turns. The easy monsters are pretty easy. The health mechanic is completely different. There are few resource items, and none that warrant use on even the weakest monster. What complaint exactly applies Ravenloft?
@thedicetower Gears of War isn't actually first person either, it is a third person shooter where the camera is positioned above and behind the characters shoulder.
I foresee a lot of grumpy feedback due to the oversimplified description of Gears of War. Gears of War is a third-person shooter, and calling it a Doom-clone is like calling Diablo III a rogue-like. Not that I really care. I just wanted to get that in before the haters spawn!
Nice review! Those figurines are amazing. My brother is really into painting figurines and I am into writing and creating board games. I recently drafted a Horde tabletop game (from Gears of War) so I might get this just for the figurines, have my brother paint them and then use them for my game.
I get the feeling that I would feel exactly the way you do Tom IF the guys at Fantasy Flight Games didn't demo it for me at GenCon. They filled me in on a lot of the tactics and "combos" that make the game more functional. Team work was the key. Even if I had the resources I couldnt just charge in and mow down the front line. If I did it would put me in a bad spot for the next round and/or cut me off from my team.
No. The cards make up modular scenarios and every time it's the enemy's turn, you draw an AI card and it dictates what the enemy does with "if, then" situations. "If there is an player near by, run up and hit them. If they are too far away to reach in one turn, move to cover. If you can't reach cover this turn, move away from the players." That sort of thing.

However there are plenty of cards to help to draw extra cards, and proper teamwork really is the key. But one could very easly separate health and cards with house rules.
@Psychodegu I think what he means (what I think as well) is the feeling of dread and how the game just isn't really fun. When you win a game it isn't "Woo, that was tough but super fun, let's do it again!", what you get is "About time, geeze. What else do you have?".
I think you were correct in saying it's a Doom ripoff. It's a big tough marine shooting and killing aliens. Its the same story mechanic that's been used in most shooter games with the only major exception being Half-Life
I always dislike 'running out of ammo' mechanic. I know it's realistic, but it's not fun. It rarely adds much suspense to the game. Mostly it just poses an annoyance. Something I don't want to repeatedly feel while playing a game.
Who cares if he's calling it first person or third person... Does it really ruin ones day to know that the camera is positioned differently than he said in a video game???
@TASDeign Yeah, exactly like bioshock, the darkness, borderlands, portal, battlefield 1942, starsiege tribes, sysem shock 2, deus ex, mirrors edge, stalker AND SO ON... they are not the same, not at all. Im not the biggest fps-fan in the world but just becuase you see a soldier and an alien its not a "rip-off". The mechanics used in the gears-series are pretty amazing and it has a touch (if you can look past the over-macho attitude) to the dilemma with us being the aliens etc.
Aye, had my eye on it. After I saw the video on Kickstarter however, I've decided to wait on its release before making the decision to buy. I'd always thought a Dark Souls board game would be similar to Talisman (but better). Not focused so much on the combat. We'll see though as the test copies get distributed and reviewed! :)
I had no idea GoW had a board game. The board game sounds pretty much like the game haha which both surprises and doesn't surprise me. I want to play a few rounds of it now haha
@OMFGPrinnyDood Lol, so it is a doom clone where you stop at pre-positioned points so that you don't die super fast, and has a nice story. I have played Gears of War and Doom, and oddly enough they share a lot in common. Keep in mind Tom is not Video game enlightened, but he also compares many board/card games to each other in the same manner.
We've played the game 5 or 6 times. Our 4-player party was massacred every single time while playing trough the introduction scenario. Needless to say, we don't like it either... It's not well balanced
I kinda expected a bad review after you said that your opinion of the game might surprise the viewers, but that you dislike it so much I would have never thought. However, the reasons you gave for it are good ones and I will probaby buy Descent rather than this game. P.S.: Tom, you should know better than to call GoW a Doom ripoff. Although I have never played GoW, I'm sure that following this line of thought I could also say that all deck building games are Dominion ripoffs.
Does anyone know if there is a mod out there to fix the health issue, Like using a die, starting at 6 health, and then moving it down when you get hit, and gaining a health when resting a turn perhaps?
thematically, order cards being used for actions and life represents the stamina of the COGs and them becoming tired. The more tired/wounded they are, the more likely they are to be killed by an enemy shot, and also they do not have such a wide range of options.
Love your reviews, and this review is another good one backed up with all you're pros and cons etc. Just remember your audience includes gamers, and gamers will get upset about naive comments. Maybe next time just say the "i know nothing about computer games part" and leave out the the comments with no knowledge or weight behind them. Love Dice Tower reviews, bit surprised you still think PC games are the same as from the 80's.
While I agree with some of your criticisms and don't care for the Gears video games, I really did enjoy this game. It felt like the LOTR LCG meets Space Hulk: Death Angel. I have played the video games though, so maybe that's why I understand why this game plays the way it does. If you grasp the fact that it's like an all-out firefight with bullets flying every which-way, the card mechanics make a lot more sense.
Great Game. Enjoy the card hand / life mechanic. It's hard, but not impossible (lose more often than win, but wins are possible so it becomes very tense). It accomplishes the cooperative aspect better than most so called cooperative games. You really have to work together--not just in terms of the game mechanics, but also because you all have to be on the same page for tactics and overall strategy and so it leads to some (not a lot, but at least some) fun, sometimes intense, discussions where you try to convince each other about the best way to move forward. It's not always obvious, especially because of the (reasonable, I think) level of unpredictability. Too bad it's out of print--but if you are ever in the NWT, Canada and fancy a game . . .
So this is how Tom Vasel really looks like? I thought he is made of pixels.

Iv just played the two first scenarios so far, and sure we did get our asses kicked by the berserker just as we got to the end of the second scenario. But I really don't agree that the game is THAT hard, you just have to use all the marines abilities and you REALLY REALLY need to use cover as much as possible. Also grenades are exremly usefull for clearing out mass spawns of enemies. I do agree about the health/cards thing which is really annoying if you get "downed".
its fair what ya said tom, its not for everyone, just say its 3rd person ;) try a bit of gameplay or at least watch some before doing another review on a game bassed of a video game/movie, might help with the next review
kept saying 1st person shooter when it is a 3rd person cover game, and marines they are COGs. Don't want to be harsh on the game after he just talked about how bad it is
@thedicetower third person a decendent of first? no, other way around Gears of War was a Third Person Shooter (not First Person) that ripped off Warhammer 40k get your facts right! lol
This dude just said gears was a first person shooter and also said a rip of doom lol I'm done. If you're gonna be a critic and a reviewer actually know what you're talking about
Plus if he played the game he’d understand why the board game makes you feel like you don’t get chance to take a breath. It’s humanities last stand which is why the board game constantly throws enemies at you. It’s supposed to be hard and feel like you’re fighting against the odds
My friend got this game and it was one of the first games in our board game collection so we played it a lot. However, once our board game collection expanded, we stopped playing it because it wasn't fun. It could be a good game for someone who is a fan of the video game and who doesn't have experience with higher quality board games. I am a big fan of the Gears of War franchise but there is too much things that don't work with this game. The cards = health is one of the worst mechanics I have seen. Perhaps it is not as bad as I think it is but this game just uses it very poorly. We were never able to beat the game until we made house rules to make the enemy weaker. I felt that there was very little strategy to the game and we were just shooting everything we saw. My buddy ended up trading the game at a board game cafe for one free day of playing games($5).
Yeahhhh, using the "rip off" word was certainly not a good call man. It's a 3rd person shooter and a very different play style compared to DOOM. It's a cover based, 3rd person shooter. I could go on for forever back and forth but i'm not going to. Other than that remark and your over all "smug" attitude during this entire video, it was a decent review.
Wow, I think it is exactly the same kind of feeling I get when playing Wrath of Ashardalon, which I don't like at all. Thank for the review, I'll definitely avoid this game. =P
@thedicetower I played all 3 of the games . A doom "ripoff" would not have had a couple million dollar budget . A good story line . And amazing game play/graphics . Also the game is a 3rd person action game . I don't want to come across as mean because i love your channel and videos . Thanks for the upload friend . :D -NoRespect013.
Um, wow. It is not anything like a "Doom Rip-off". You obviously didnt play the game enough or truly didnt understand it. Also, you dont just stand there and wait, as you put it, things are happening in real time, its hard to explain. And even if you didnt imagine it like that, imagine hundreds of bullets swarming over your head, thatd sure influence make me stand still and take cover.
well actually the Gears of War game is a 3rd person shooter. That's why I can stand it (I don't care for 1st person shooter videogames). The mechanic of a teammate giving another player a card when they're bleeding out, is a good representation of "reviving" a fallen comrade in the videogame. I'll stick with that, over this boardgame.
I gotta say, I disagree with Tom on this one. I very much enjoy the game. However, I own the video games. I think that is who this was made for almost exclusively. If you like the video games, you will like this game. If you do not like the video games, skip this game. Simple as that I think.
@thedicetower P.S ..Can you try not to do so many "Slit your wrist" and "Cut yourself" jokes .. I had a problem for many of years . It's like joking about a persons desies or illness
Tom hasn't played a Gears game, so he wouldn't understand. But in the video game, you're bound to take a couple of hits just moving from cover to cover. So I think discarding "life" to perform an action makes a lot of sense, thematically.

0:45 how to piss off every single Gears of war fan
+Jarod D T (SilvergunPro) I know man. He didn't even know enough to have criticism and yet he felt it necessary to say that.
Jarod D T hi 👋🏻 so many dislikes on this video
@@mrwprod I appreciate how confidently incorrect he was
Strange. The Pathfinder Adventure Card game uses an almost identical mechanism for health = hand of cards. And Tom absolutely loves that.
Not a fan of using cards as life. Fast forward to the Gloomhaven review and it's a clever system. Hmmm.
I absolutely love this game, even though I don't care for the source material. The AI deck is an ingenious design, there's always something coming for you, it forces you to play aggressively, it's difficult... I love the dice tower. Calling it a Doom-clone does not do it justice. It's cover-system was something completly new and the universe in which it takes place is very well fleshed out.
I get the feeling that you didn't like the game before you rolled a dice.
No, I had no opinion on it, and hoped to like it!
Am I the only one annoyed by the dumping of all the game contents everywhere?
I don't knew weather you buy the games yourself or sponsored, but respect the games!
I think this had to be a Miami Dice episode, so we can hear Sam's opinion too.
any advice for a D and D type game. RPG board game where we can level up players but not have a dungeon master/ make up a campaign? Used to play Necromunda back in the day
Try any of the DnD Adventure System, Wrath of Ashardalon, Castle Ravenloft or Legend of Drizzt
Also Descent: Journeys in the Dark
Descent is excellent. And there is an app that replaces the Overlord, so you can all play cooperatively.
whats a good way of making a good fast paste shooter game mechanic?
You are right Mr Vasel, one of the requirements to fully enjoy the GoW board game is to actually have enjoyed one of the video games in the trilogy.

No. The cards make up modular scenarios and every time it's the enemy's turn, you draw an AI card and it dictates what the enemy does with "if, then" situations. @adamtv13 It wasn't a joke, it was a reference to the logic of the game mechanic.
"Roll, move, shoot" Is what you do in the video game too. :V
worst part of every vid is the pieces drop... cringe every time, stop the game abuse
@Psychodegu I think what he means (what I think as well) is the feeling of dread and how the game just isn't really fun. When you win a game it isn't "Woo, that was tough but super fun, let's do it again!", what you get is "About time, geeze. What else do you have?".

Deign so shooting aliens automatically makes it a doom rip off? Guess halo is a doom rip off too
I always dislike 'running out of ammo' mechanic. I know it's realistic, but it's not fun. It rarely adds much suspense to the game. Mostly it just poses an annoyance. Something I don't want to repeatedly feel while playing a game.

thumbs up if he knows nothing about gears of war
@McNoat Descent is a nice choice, but it also has its flaws. It would be amazing if it was a full co-op, or at least more balanced.
@TASDeign Yeah, exactly like bioshock, the darkness, borderlands, portal, battlefield 1942, starsiege tribes, sysem shock 2, deus ex, mirrors edge, stalker AND SO ON... they are not the same, not at all. Anybody got the vassal module for this? We can play a horde mode :P
It's a 3rd person shooter, not 1st nor a doom ripoff...
An incredible board game based off of a video game would be Dark Souls. If done right it would be absolutely jaw dropping.
It's on Kickstarter now, looks amazing, mad you mentioned it two years ago
Aye, had my eye on it. After I saw the video on Kickstarter however, I've decided to wait on its release before making the decision to buy. I'd always thought a Dark Souls board game would be similar to Talisman (but better). Not focused so much on the combat. We'll see though as the test copies get distributed and reviewed! :)
I decided to back it, price was ok just for all the minatures, just got to hope the games good now :p it just ended, they just took my money :)
Steven Taylor so what did you think of it?? Friend got it but we have yet to play it. Probably will this weekend at a local con.
Tennethums1 I love it. It is very grindy(hence dark souls haha) and reliant on some RNG, but it is great.
I had no idea GoW had a board game. The board game sounds pretty much like the game haha which both surprises and doesn't surprise me. I want to play a few rounds of it now haha
@McNoat I apologize for saying the word "ripoff". Maybe "descendent" would have been a better word.
The Dice Tower it's third person with a cover system. doom dont got dat
Great review Tom, but I *strongly* disagree with you! Yes it's tough (particularly with 4 people), but I still really like it.
The thing of using action cards for life is like when you run you lose energy and you become weaker
@OMFGPrinnyDood Lol, so it is a doom clone where you stop at pre-positioned points so that you don't die super fast, and has a nice story. I have played Gears of War and Doom, and oddly enough they share a lot in common. git gud
If you add house rules then it becomes less hard!
Although I have never played GoW, I'm sure that following this line of thought I could also say that all deck building games are Dominion ripoffs.
no - you are well within your rights to say rip off, because basically that's business
well ok but im big fan of game so i am gonna pick it up off amazon this thursday anyway
love the tie bro (y) thank you for the review!
Memoir '44 tie, nice
Tom has really misrated this one. Gears of war is a fantastic game. It seems that Tom did not playtest this one enough.
OR, you know, his opinion just differs from yours. ;)
Does anyone know if there is a mod out there to fix the health issue, Like using a die, starting at 6 health, and then moving it down when you get hit, and gaining a health when resting a turn perhaps?
Warhammer 40K Death Angel is a strong comparison imo
I found that doom comment offensive, Had to hold back my pimp hand.
thematically, order cards being used for actions and life represents the stamina of the COGs and them becoming tired. The more tired/wounded they are, the more likely they are to be killed by an enemy shot, and also they do not have such a wide range of options.

@swfanakin hate to be even more douchey, it's a 3rd person over the shoulder cover based shooter. lol
Please make sure you play the actual game you'll see why people love the video game
because all third person games rip off Doom
wait what?
My friend got this game and it was one of the first games in our board game collection so we played it a lot. Wow, I think it is exactly the same kind of feeling I get when playing Wrath of Ashardalon, which I don't like at all. Thank for the review, I'll definitely avoid this game. =P
i really like ur vids, but i realllly wish you would use a decent cam and mic. I make barely minimum wage, and can afford both, along with my rent
Thanks! This was eight years ago. :)
@thedicetower I played all 3 of the games .
And even if you didnt imagine it like that, imagine hundreds of bullets swarming over your head, thatd sure influence make me stand still and take cover.
just giving you a heads up, he had meant the doom board game. which the mechanics are fairly similar. simple misunderstanding
well actually the Gears of War game is a 3rd person shooter. That's why I can stand it (I don't care for 1st person shooter videogames).
The mechanic of a teammate giving another player a card when they're bleeding out, is a good representation of "reviving" a fallen comrade in the videogame. I'll stick with that, over this boardgame.
FFG makes the absolutely worse rulebooks, ever. I owned Descent, Runebound, etc. BLEH for the rulebooks.
awesome game
@xxxLOTRMANxxx even more douchey, it's 3rd person over the shoulder. lol
Best board game ever and awesome review
Nope, it's all the players against the game. Like D&D games, or Arkham Horror.
isnt gears of war 3rd person?
Gears is a 3rd person shooter fyi since u didnt know anything about it
I gotta say, I disagree with Tom on this one. I very much enjoy the game. However, I own the video games. I think that is who this was made for almost exclusively. If you like the video games, you will like this game. If you do not like the video games, skip this game. Simple as that I think.
Probably not as thrilling as the actual video games, but the board game looks decent.
Play the game first, than judge it please:)
@thedicetower P.S ..Can you try not to do so many "Slit your wrist" and "Cut yourself" jokes .. I had a problem for many of years . It's like joking about a persons desies or illness
Warhammer 40k ripoff***
its 3rd person not 1st :P
It IS a shooter, but not an FPS. Don't call it a Doom Clone.
it's a lot like the videogame
These comments are so fuckin old
Lol, everyones getting all upset about calling gears of war a ripoff
Your a teacher .... what do you teach?....
Its actually 3rd person....just saying
need to be a little more descent? lol
