- Опубліковано 13 кві 2024
- Back to Black is a 2024 biographical drama film based on the life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, played by Marisa Abela. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and written by Matt Greenhalgh, the film also stars Jack O'Connell, Eddie Marsan, and Lesley Manville.
Following the death of Winehouse in July 2011, several filmmakers attempted to create biopic projects but none of them progressed. In 2018, Winehouse's estate announced they had signed a deal for a film about her life and career. By July 2022, StudioCanal moved forward with production, and filming took place in London from January to April 2023.
The film was released theatrically by StudioCanal in Australia on 11 April 2024, and was released in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2024. Focus Features will release the film in the United States on 17 May 2024. It received mixed reviews from critics.

Tbh Amy Winehouse’s life should have been a series like the Selena one on Netflix. There’s just so much about her life that needs to be explored in a nuanced way and it’s hard to do that with a 2 hour movie. I also wish that it was anybody but Sam directing this. We needed a director who was gonna stick to the stone cold facts and bring up interesting conversations about addiction, heart ache, misogyny, and the neglect she faced from her father. If they were going to do a film Amy deserved the same budget and care as Elvis did.
Through her profession, a friend of mine met Amy not long before she passed away. She knew her over a period of time & said Amy was just the loviest person.
I actually was a huge fan of Amy’s music. For her to be a soul and jazz singer, write her own songs, and have such a mature voice at a young age. She was a once in a lifetime talent.
I don’t like biopic movies, when you have someone like Amy Winehouse there is no way anyone can replicate her or her life, like no one could play Kurt Cobain and make me believe it, or the movie biopic of Marilyn Monroe, and all the others, we lived through the real people, let sleeping dogs lie 🕊️ 🩷
To clarify none of Amy’s friends were involved with this project. It was all Mitch Winehouse. I know Sam Taylor Johnson is trying to distance him from the project but the truth is he was the one who signed on everything about it. Her friends did not agree with the direction he was taking it and so he kicked them all off the project.
I honestly believe Mitch was way too involved in the film. It seems that the script, and director were severely hampered by him. The creators of the film weren’t allowed true creative freedom. This movie seems to be about Mitch trying to absolve himself of any responsibility towards his daughter.
That says it all if the father was involved heavily.
@stefrodrigez
Wow, did he really?
I absolutely hated the Bob Marley biopic - and I absolutely loved this, loved the actress, loved her voice, tearing up by the end, I highly recommend it, I love a film that I know I would watch again, and this one I would
Way better than the Bob Marley one.
She was a tragic soul who was also very talented i feel sorry for Amy she was vulnerable
Locked in 🔐! Appreciate the shoutout ☺️🫶🏾🫶🏾
💃💃💥💥
I found it very disappointing. It started off very slow, and didn’t speed up. I also agree with you all, they portrayed Amy as the bad person and Blake the goody goody
Loved maddies review.. soo smart, eloquent, passionate and full of wit. 🙌🏻💛🥰 xx
Please can you review the channel 4 Paula Yates documentary please, i would love to hear your thoughts
Saw it today and I actually liked it.
PROS
Eddie Marsan was spot on as Mitch Winehouse
Marisa Abela was very good as Amy Winehouse.
Story was good
Chemistry with Marisa and Lesile was bittersweet.
Cons
Lack of songs(only 5 Amy Winehouse songs are in this. Shame In My Bed wasn't included).
Blake was to handsome(Jack O Connell).
Marisa wasn't curvy in the beginning as she was skinny throughout. The real Amy was very curvy and then she got too thin.
3.5 out of 5.
The ending was also very heartbreaking. I was shocked that it ended like the way it ended.
For me, I didn’t need it to be an epic cinematic masterpiece, I needed to see her actually bringing some of Amy into her performance - because that’s what it is, she’s acting. I was a little unfair basing my opinion going in on the clip they showed of her singing & speaking. It felt like a parody of Amy’s speaking voice which irked me - but the clip didn’t do Marisa Abela justice. She can’t be Amy, she doesn’t have the same vocal register & of course, they don’t look that alike, but this portrayal was an emotional one & I didn’t walk out of the cinema berating her performance as I’d expected, it was the writing that was bad.
Agree agree x
I thought this was so amateurish. Been waiting to hear what you all thought.
I was torn about seeing this. I loved her music and even when I hear it now, I feel such sadness. I'm glad I've read and now heard your review of it first. It's made my mind up. I will not go and see this. Thank you for such a thoughtful and thorough review.
I feel the same...the documentary didn't leave me emotionally for days, it really affected me, so I don't think the film will do that. Not to use her voice just seems mad imo.
Could you tell what the documentary is called please. There are a few that come up when I Google it.
Amy
I too do not like the bio pic. Always seems a bit too sycophantic. To me the best thing in the documentary was the insight from her childhood friends that lived outside of amy’s life. It grounded it and gave amy a ‘normality’ rather than just sensationalism. It almost sounds like an effort to clean up the families reputation, to lessen culpability.
I was very disappointed they didn’t use Amy’s real vocals. It made it so hard for me to see Amy in the actress. This movie shouldn’t have been released in theaters; instead it should have been released on lifetime.
Been waiting for your review of this! 😊
I do that with all my t shirts and husbands that I steal … we look like bobble heads otherwise Mark 😂❤
I was really looking forward to yalls review. I don’t think the clips that were released did the films perception any favours. I was shocked to know that the actress did Al l she own singing in the film.
I watch the doc but didn’t review im hoping they sell it on UA-cam
I was at Butlins too, with my kids, when they announced Amy’s death. Also saw you two in the gift shop lol.
No way!!! How funny - or not funny - given the date - but how serendipitous!!! X
Thanks guys ❤
Well I don't think I'll bother seeing this then. Thanks guys!
Ive seen some clips wouldnt mind seeing this ❤
I really wouldn't mind seeing this
It made me cry both times I’ve watched it 💔
Completely agree with this. Thank you.
Side note - have you seen baby reindeer yet? Best series I may have ever seen. Netflix. Unbelievable. I think you’d love it too, would love to hear your review.
Not watched the series yet but loved the one man stage show some years ago - will check it out xx
Best review I heard from actual fans. As a die hard fan I see through fake fans. I’m valid in my feeling in not wanting to see this in the state. She (actress) sounds like an indie pop singer and now a soul jazz singer(like Amy).
Id never notice if someone had a blackhead on their nose 😂
She got Tina turner with and tony Bennett too she in a safe place now and did they ask the family to do this
The actress sounds just like her
I loved the film. I went with my daughter and we both enjoyed it. We knew it had bad reviews but wanted to see for ourselves. She was extremely talented and this introduced us to her music again. I think this just shows how people see films differently. Obviously its not going to be true to her life as only she lived it . I love a film that makes myself and my daughter discuss it afterwards and this was one.
Think the actress sounds just like her
Went to see this earlier. I found it really sad she didn’t really have any girlfriends. 😮
She had a few, they just didn’t show on the movie
I can't wait to see it. Look at Rocketman that was a fantasy biopic, it worked. I think Amy's life should have been told as a series. My thing is timelines, if timelines are off it might as well be cast aside. I think the real Blake looks like a young Ethan Embry. I wonder what the dad thinks? He always has some thing to say he hated Amy the documentary. I got Tyler's book the dad was mad about that too. I still want to see it. Why do we have to wait?
Mitch was mad about Tyler’s book too?
I never really liked the idea of a Biopic.
But I will always give it a go.
After watching Aretha Franklin’s Biopic in 2020.
I haven’t actually watched one since.
Regarding Amy, my Cousin knew her.😄
And she has said this Biopic really doesn’t Represent Amy at all. ☹️
I live near Camden and she is actually Buried round the Corner my Flat. 💔
Thanks to you all for this Review.
It’s actually made my mind up, Not to see it.
😅😅
From the moment I heard about this film I was looking forward to the Popcorn Junkies review more than the film 🤣
£uck, this is probably the most interesting review, but you talk over each each, its hard to catch
everything.
Will try with again with 🎧
i dont like marisa as amy... sorry
