I find your tutorials on the basic skills very useful, thanks Luke. That guy at 1:25 needs to watch your tutorials as well, he'll probably get as much out of them as I do! 😉
Hi Luke. Just some more suggestions...:-). 1) I have been riding the same OR Stick shift bar as you for like 7 months. Yday I needed to safty release it - but it didn't work - the metal pin were stuck in the house. So maybee a video about checking the safty release check and a plan B, if the safty realease doesnt depover the kite. 2) How to waterstart the kite in deep water/ outside the break - when it has landed on water in different "funny" positions. All the best, Lars.
Hey Lars, sorry must have missed this comment, did you get your bar all sorted out? did you contact OR? Regarding water realuching, we have another video that explains how to water relaunch in light winds, check that one out and see if that helps :)
Flukes Kitesurfing - the video’s I have seen has been with you standing on dry warm sand ;-). I would like to see the instruction in real world deep water situations, where also the instructor is swimming ...
Hi Luke. I really enjoy watching your videos. I usually watch a couple the night before I go kiting just to give a little update on the basics. Wondering if you wouldn't mind doing a short vid or comment somewhere regarding what to do if you get your lines tangled with another kite. It looks terrifying and I honestly don't know what I'd do if it happened. Common sense says to let go of the bar and activate the safety release in the hopes that the kite lands depowered on the water, and hope the other guy does too ... But I'm really not sure.
Hey Jane, Oh awesome! thanks for letting me know, I am glad you have found them helpful :) That is a great question, but it is a very complicated one as the tangle can be made in so many different ways. Best practise is as you have described, however, in reality, sometime its best to just let go of the bar, wait a moment, communicate with the other person, and then try and fly yourself out of the tangle. this might work, or might mean 1 person needs to activate the safety and even sometimes release completely (if there is someone to help catch the kite on shore) and allow that kite to move past the flying kite... it may be wise to both activate the safety, but by doing so, you are really committing to the tangle as once both kites are spiralling and crashing a very unpredictable mess can be created. it really is case by case... that might be terrible advise sorry, but its a very hard thing to demonstrate in a video safely... i will try and think of a way we can do it for you :)
Hey Leor, Water start? if so, you actually take the kite past 12 slightly, and then sweep it down back in the direction you want to go. It sounds like you may benefit form an instructor lesson through to show you the water start :)
Hi Luke, great video, thank you! Do you know why when I try to launch my kite it falls on the trailing edge towards the centre of the wind window? It's quite dangerous as it starts to flip over many times and pulls me very hard. Thank you!
Hey Roman, Great question and something I should have probably covered in this video. If your kite falls backward onto the trailing edge when launching on land or in the water, it means you are holding onto the leader line (or steering with the bar) for too long. You will see at 3:20 when i release the line. If I had of held it for longer, the kite would have either looped backwards, or fallen onto the trailing edge, or both. On the flip side, if i had of released it earlier, then the kite might not have launched and have fallen back down onto the leading edge. You have to feel the perfect time to let go, that the kite will be able to begin to fly, without falling backwards. By the sounds of things, you need to let go earlier, ALSO, if your kite does roll backward. Let go of the bar immediately. let the kite settle, get back into the launching position (across the wind) and try again. :)
I've had a couple of lessons and this is nothing like what I experienced with my kite. My instructor must have been pretty bad, the wind was kind of difficult I guess, but he was telling us to do what you've said not to do (the jerking the bar aggressively) just to make the kite gain hight....it was definitively not as smooth as you just showed. Quick question, the distance between the person and the end of the area where you can push/pull the bar should be less that the person's extended arms, right? These videos are ace, thanks for the effort!
Hey Barao, yeah, I guess people teach in different ways, but really, the kites are great at flying, and the pilots are what make them crash, so in general, if you take it easy on the bar, everything else will be easier too. To answer your question, what you describe is the "throw length" and on some bars is fixed by the manufacture, and others are adjustable. I have mine set just to the limit of my reach, as in the surf, its easier to have a more throw, however, other riders, particularly freestyle, will often have their throw set much shorter. As a general rule, though, you must be able reach it if you drop the bar. the whole point is to be able to let go of the bar, perhaps spin out your lines, and then reach forward and regain control of the kite. :)
Hi Aunt E, The goal is to practice without much power in the kite. For that reason you match the kite size with the conditions. As an example, for a person approx. 75kg as a beginner, If the wind is 10 knots you could try the 10 M to practise if the wind is 20 knots you would practice on a 6 or even smaller. While doing first lessons we keep the kite small enough so that no matter what mistakes are made the kite will not pull the student. Only once you feel confident with piloting skills would you start to increase the power (size based on wind) Hope that helps.
Yup you nailed it :) Excellent accommodation at the Agualina, we rented one of the units for a whole month, loved it! Dare2Fly kite school also has great 2018 kites you can rent if you don't want to pay extra baggage fees traveling with your kites!
Hello. How funny! As he, the teacher narrator person is speaking about landing a stunt kite. In the background, there is this guy! LOL! BEING DRUG BY HIS KITE!!... TRYING TO KEEP IT FROM TAKE OFF! SERIOUSLY. FUNNY
For all those people talking about the guy at 1:25 he did intentional to move himself to the exit without the need to walk there. Just my opinion

Hi Luke , learned a lot from your videos, still haven’t got in the water yet , just practicing on land
Hey Point Break, great to hear, keep us posted how you're going :)
1:20 he says " the kites are tuned these days" and there is a guy dragged at far end of the beach. Hahaha funny.

Where should you start your kite for the water relaunch? From noon and dive it down, or slightly higher than 45 degrees

Does it matter what size kite you use to practice on the beach?

Thanks .. good tips.
great explanations, good videos.
Very helpful videos! I'm learning a lot thank you!! where is this? Australia? Sydney?
Cheers John thanks for the feedback :) This was actually filmed in the DR, Cabarete.
Where are you located?
Between Aus and Canada :)
Good stuff mate cheers
isn't it dangerous to fly kites on land? for beginners?
Good question :) totally depends on each location, but a long sandy beach with a clear downwind area is ideal.
where are you?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH 🙏
You're welcome! :)
I want u to teach me ,,,, I like how u explain thanks
thank you!!
Спасибо большое)
