I had 35+ years as an independent MB repair shop owner and I remember the struggle to get parts, service information, and techs. Now, on my 4th Tesla (yes, I need therapeutics!), the future is clear. I applaud your foresight and I agree with you that the future mechanic will be highly sought after as well as well compensated. Keep up the good work.

I'm a recovering ice mechanic and I agree with everything you said. that's why I've ordered a cybertruck and invested only in Tesla.
You and you shop are a perfect example of the brave new world of auto repair .I would only hope you become the first Authorized independant Tesla repair facility as it appears you have earned that ability and are doing that task impeccably.
I am just so glade to live to be able experience the tecnical and cultural change to something I have dedicated decades of my life learning seviceing
using and loving its massive modern ice complexity, but all things must change, and I'm excited to own aTesla.
I test drove a model y performance with self driving.
In that test drive I realized this was the most capable car I've ever driven , and it hardly made a sound doing it, I thought of all the fuel injectors and throttle plates and piston rings and main bearings and dial indicators in micrometers engine scopes the smoke machines and on and on just passed through my mind disappearing into my past and I was driving my future.
The use of those tools will not be lost or not used Again by me but I won't be tied to it or depended on it or continually worry about internal engine wear , oil changes, block heaters or pre oilers ...except with my Kubota 😁.
Keep on redefinining what is automotive service 👍

Just like EV manufacturers, legacy OEMs or new OEMs, have to utilize workers with electronic and software skills, the new EV repair shops will have to do the same. Glad to see someone that is blazing the path that many others will need to also follow/create. Seems as if the new manufacturers didn't quite figure the repair aspect into their master plans very well and only went down to the "assembly replacement" level much like the IT industry has done for years. This revolution has made amazing changes to the automotive industry. As more of the EVs exit their warranty periods more and more EV repair facilities will be needed since the standard legacy automotive repair facilities will not be able to easily or cheaply transition due to lack of skillsets and electronic/software tools.
Bravo Gruber Motors for leading the way in yet another new industry as the EV revolution continues to quicken its pace.

I fully agree. Mr Gruber is very smart, prospective customers are going to feel comfortable when they walk to the door and see that his facility is expansive, fully equipped, state of the art, and on top of things. He's properly posturing himself and his business to meet the demands of the future.

I have been talking to my peers in the audio/video/lighting service trade to take a look at the EV repairs as we have the analytic skills needed to find faults on electronics and software levels for some time now. I have watched a couple of your videos now, and I have got to say your business definitely has some of the best insight into the future of EVs and the repair infrastructure that will be required for them. As someone who is currently getting into the automotive enthusiast community, I have always wondered how "mechanic shops" would look for EVs, and this certainly answered many of my questions there. Keep up the informative content, and I hope the future of EVs are filled with companies as resourceful and straightforward as you and your company seem to be.

When the first model 3s come off warranty there's going to be an explosion in EV service needs, getting a second location running before then would be huge.

As a 25yr master technician with diagnostic and hybrid/electric light duty specialist certification I can tell you this new industry change requires more skills the No dealership will pay more for. The industry doesn't want to pay for qualified high level technicians! There is no money left in car business and no incentive for the new generation most of which car less about working on cars. This just isn't my view but it's the view of my engineers at the Lexus training center. Flare rate system that will also have to change to a high salary to interest anyone.
I work in the northeast in high volume shop and I know large amounts of auto techs who hate there job due to these issues.

I teach metal in auto shop in a New Jersey high school. Back in 2008 I saw the change from gas to electric on the horizon. So I switch my program from a traditional auto shop basic maintenance high school program, pre-engineering research and Design program.
To prove this in 2009 we built our first conversion vehicle from gasoline to Electric. It was a 1990 rabbit and we replace the engine with an electric motor speed controller and batteries.

  • @martinlavoie4002

I agree that the every day tech will have a hard time transitioning but I also think that dealers will just do like BMW and have a link to some diagnostic headquarter and they will determine what to replace and have the tech just replace the module or wiring harness or both. This will just make techs parts replacement jockeys.

Your analysis is good as far as it goes. But taking it further, if the techs with the skillet to diagnose to the component level are scarce, and for other reliability/liability issues, I suggest the only feasible repairs become module replacement. Further, if the company determines there is a faulty module and doesn't want anyone but them doing the repair, they will simply brick the entire car. So rather than a broad distributed network of highly skilled electronic auto techs as you envision, there could just as likely be a highly centralized, small cadre of desk jockeys monitoring and running diagnostics remotely when issues arise, ready to tell the vehicle lessee to return the car and upgrade to the newer model. Given Tesla's track record and the mindset of VW and BMW, I fear the latter is more likely.

I’m a mechanic of the future. I own a shop that service hybrid and electric cars. I’m a regular car mechanic but has great knowledge of electronics. I even repair car computers and even Televisions lol😂. I’m familiar with electronic circuits. As far as writing codes I can only write simple C programming though. But I think I’m good enough to fix a Tesla which I include in my shops service vehicles. Most problem with circuit boards are usually not too hard. Occasionally though a microprocessor would fail and that is a big headache but for the most parts bad capacitor bad solder connection. Most failure of components are either due to poor circuit design or defective components that is just, waiting to fail. Having an schematic is a big help. Being able to look at a circuit and understand it’s functionality is a plus. You don’t really have to be an electronic or electrical engineer to service a Tesla. Most of the skills required is more of an electronic technician. They are the ones who are more skilled at pinpointing a bad component or any problem in a circuit.

    • @CalculatedRiskAK

I predict that the transition to EVs will be slowed in the future not by a shortage of batteries or vehicles, but rather by a shortage of technicians that can work at independent repair shops for out-of-warranty vehicles. It's harder to justify switching when you can't just take your car to a shop to get repaired.

Those will be in service for another 10 years. For older techs like myself, I'm good. HOWEVER, I agree with the point of the video.
