Another masterclass by Daniel King, Spassky is one of the most under-rated World Champions! Sometimes I feel it has a lot to do with Fischer being the only top player at that time from outside USSR.
Terrific game, I'm enjoying this series very much. I have an amazing game to offer as a recommendation for you to cover, if you haven't seen it you are in for a treat and if you have you will know why I hold this game in such high regard. It's a striking attacking game with a positionally justified double exchange sacrifice which was featured and annotated in Gligoric's Selected Chess Masterpieces book, Spassky-Ghitescu, Beverwijk 1967. It's apparently not so well known, but you will definitely not regret taking a look at this one.
A beautiful game. I analysed in an article I wrote a few years ago. To be honest, I had something else in mind for my next Spassky video, but I will bear it in mind.
Great analysis! Saw the Rd1 but not for the very exact reasons. Instead of Ne6, I thought Nc6 with Queen threatening f7. But don't think there is much with Black's queen-side Rook protecting d8 square
Really enjoying this series in Spassky. He’s overlooked too often and, as others have said here, he’s often most well known just for losing to Fischer. But Daniel, you have to be careful about criticising these ‘little ears’ moves at the side of the board... especially as the Najdorf is you favorite opening!! 🤣
:) Well said about the Najdorf. Glad you are enjoying the Spassky series. I hope to look at a couple more of his games before the next big online tournament takes over.
I can suggest three old books. The best chess games of boris spassky by andrew soltis, Spassky's 100 best games by cafferty, Spassky's road to the summit by clarke. All these cover up to 1970-1971. There is a german book, but i do not know the title, it only has the games, no comments.
Watching Spassky's games makes you understand the meaning of the word "game". Btw, in my opinion, hadn't Spassky been such a gentleman, caving in to all these crazy Fisher requirements, he probably wouldn't have lost his title in 1972... But such is history, it can't be altered, unless we go into quantum physics' parallel universes...
A true gentleman. You should read "white king and red queen" by daniel johnson, to have an understanding of the cold war in chess. "endgame " by frank brady.
I will not delay my castling, I will not delay my castling, I will not delay my castling. A simple rule we teach beginners for a reason, then they turn to grandmasters and start looking to a ways to avoid that rule.
I believe that Spassky should have played Fischer in 1975. But the russian chess federation wanted new blood and decided that Spassky and Korchnoi were too "old" and also took away Geller and Furman from Spassky's camp so pretty much all the knowledge of Spassky's opening repertoire ended up in Karpov's hands. So Spassky was at a great disadvantage when he faced Karpov in the semifinals of the candidates.

I ran this game through Stockfish. Spassky's play is nearly flawless in this game played long before computers.
I love this series of videos on Spassky!

Except for all of the other top players. Larsen, stein, Najdorf, Reshevsky, etc

I guess the only thumb down came from Darga himself.
Please, could you go through some Petrosian games?
Thanks Dan. Would you recommend any book on Spassky. I have non in my library until now.
To be honest, I can't think of a good modern book on Spassky, but perhaps there is one...?
PowerPlayChess I will drop the question in a chess book collectors forum. Thanks Dan.
@@PowerPlayChess Kasparov wrote a collection of books on his predecessors as world champion.
In English, part 3 is on Petrosian and Spassky.
