I have a round antique table sitting in the middle of my living room floor and I keep roses from Walmart in them... Or any flowers from Walmart (live flowers) Looks & smells great ✨🤭✨
I liked your video your ideas were "no nonsense" and to the point. I do a lot of staging with my clients as a Realtor and appreciate your tips, especially the one about the dated silk plants, have a few of those I need to "retire" in my own home as well.
The key thing to make your home look very beautiful is the " lightening " . Put in more lights as much as you can afford it , it lends glamour to your home .
Crown mouldings and large dark wood furniture have their place in historical homes. But most developers see them has 'aged, and they are not popular in new high-end developments of today. It is much like the colour palette beige. Although it was common in the 70's (and a 'safe-vanilla' choice) ike its limited contrasting colour companion 'brown'. Which always seems to attract tassel cushions and curtains matched with brass fittings.
We put in crown molding years ago, but have found you can make it more impressive (so to speak) by adding thinner trim strips at top and bottom, painting all the same white. You cannot tell it's not one big wide piece...the more, the merrier. Guess we'll add some more!
Thanks for the great ideas. The only one I will comment about is that a sleek mid century, simple look should not have a lot of moldings. No crown and no wide, opulent base. I see a lot of homes done wrong on TV. because it seems like people want moldings. Get to know what kind of home you have and stay with the look. It will be a lot less work and if you sell it, the new owners won't have to remove all the goo gaws that have been put in for the wrong reasons. Thanks for the video.
nice ideas here for increasing value. The molding ideas is really good because it really makes a difference from plain to something feeling more customized as such we see a lot of properties with these features taking to even greater levels with tongue and groove as an example. All in all, good information!
I have a question that is really bugging me, I'm a fellow decorator who loves to decorate. I'm also 15 but have the mindset of a 35 year old haha. One thing that makes me stand out among a lot of other decorators is the fact that I LOVE Brass. And yes, the polished and brushed brass. I just think it can either look really pretty and elegant or outdated if not used right. I have always loved brass things. I am struggling on where it would look good at and people wouldn't think it was dated. I also LOVE the way they use to decorate higher class homes in the 1980's. I'm not talking about granny wallpaper or dated fluorescent lights. I'm talking about the light beige and creams and pastel accents with palm plants and brass. I also add a touch of Louis XV furniture with it too. I just love the way it mixes. May I get some advice to make it not seem dated to others eye? I don't see it that way, but I know others might. Thank you!
I have to say, I think that is really cool that you are drawn to brass or more antique looking things. Be a trend setter! I think the best designers can think outside the box. there are so many beautiful things in this world we all don't have to stick to the same old boring look or copy what other people are doing, some of the greatest design success stories are people who did something different, then other people loved the fresh new take on things and suddenly it became popular! Good luck
Niick, brass is a great choice. You can style up with an empire elegance, go fun and funky with steampunk whimsy, or exotic with British colonial from India to the Caribbean. Just make sure it's bright and shining, except in steampunk where you can go from grunge to Edwardian chic. Eclectic furniture, an old globe or maps, exotic rugs, and some leather as accents (camel saddle anyone?) would give you a world traveler feel. Cabinets of curious specimens (Fake or real) set on book shelves draw people in to do their own exploring. Oh, and NEVER let the truth get in the way of a good tale. Photoshop a couple of black and white or sepia tone framed prints of adventures - maybe to encourage others to live out their dreams. Every great innovator did their own thing until others recognized their genius.
That is a bold statement, good for you. Polished brass- well prefer brushed types of finishes and agree the adding of 'metal' to a design always adds to the character of it. Those types of designs, 'high class homes in 1980's' most I believe were in Coastal Home's designs. The Louis XV type of furniture- surely can find deals now!! These types of furniture are hard to find as a set, but finding parts like end tables, etc. with a good coat of paint- to add the bling back in- surely is an improvement. Everyone in their sister now are taking 'fine quality antiques' and ruining them by slapping a coat of white paint over them- for this fad- farmhouse look which will fade in time. So, when I am talking Louis XV types - NOT the real antiques, I mean the quality vintage reproductions of the 1960's that are floating around resale/antique shops. Add, the update and some nice accessories from the Parisian look- and no one should cry- dated!!
I don't pay attention to hand-stuff, old enough to watch your words- on an instructional video- it's what you want to do with expression. Add a pair of nice bold glasses, a Ostrich- chartreuse colored boa, and a gold bangle or two- bring back Phyllis Diller-Killer, and no one will worry about the hands. Wonderful tips, and thank you!!
I recently removed a good bit of dentil moldings in our house. I wanted a cleaner, modern look, and mostly to give a taller ceiling. Also painted some walls the same color as the ceiling, in a soft white. Always felt crown was the ultimate, but began to question that on my 8' ceiling. Perhaps more intended for taller ones?
I keep my faux plants beautiful by cleaning the dust off often But there are some that are not easy to clean those I replace And it depends on how much I love the plant or the arrangement too
A Lee ....a very easy way to dust fake flowers is this.....put some table salt in the bottom of a garbage bag....put the top part of the flowers in side the bag...holding the stems and the garbage bag tight...shake the salt around the flowers...the salt takes away the dust...and leaves the flowers shiny...can be done with house plants
Tracy Raia-dowd: I had no idea you could wash silk flowers! (Plastic ones, sure, but where could you possibly find plastic flowers these days--and they were really kinda awful...) THANKS! I was gonna toss 'em anyway, so even if they melt, it's worth a try!
I have faux palms in my home and I consider them to be classic in design . I paid 500.00 for a 10 ft silk palm ,I clean and keep it looking like new I will new get rid of it
Love the crown moldings! But, to be honest, super-extra-wide ones (like on some of these pictures) only look like cheap show-off. But I definitely agree that reasonably large, withe moldings, on the contrary, do make the space look well-finished and more luxurious :)
Great tips, but for me I love a beautiful chandalier lamp with vintage style furniture, its a classic and for the faux plants I keep my old beautiful day lilies and tulep plants dust free. They are well made and expensive. I would not replace them with the ones they make now a days which can't compare the quality.
Okay....if you can, make sure to choose the highest quality furniture you can afford...antiques are fantastic for a lux look. Houseplants are lovely, but don't go overboard to make a statement ie: orchids. Lux treatments include zebra patterns in carpets......speaking of them.... if you can get a hold of a 100 wool carpet you are fortunate indeed....real persians are out of this budget area but you can find many lookalikes on ebay... and do pillows in sheeny golden colors or silver. I am an interior designer who knows....if you cannot get antiques there is always painting furniture with milk paint. You can do this!
Believe me if you think zebra rugs and gold shimmer pillows are good design you need to go back to design school. They were nice in the 90's/00's but are very dated now.
Angela: I agree with you. I am severely off-put by zebra stripes and gold pillows only work if they work with the rest of the room--naturally, same as any other accent colors/patterns/textures etc. And I've taught interior design.
hi there! we actually have a new house and will be moving this month. ur tips are greatly appreciated and i will take note of them. thanks for sharing this video!☺
Great tips! Good taste but for the 90's! !!! Today's deco is simplistic, Now it's not about adding, but about taking away, rentals and houses are very expensive and space much less.
Monique Lehnhardt I get it. I move mine out of The way during the day when I used my couch. But at the end of the night, I put them back and I wake up in my living room looks fabulous. I don’t have a ton, because it does get to be a nuisance and it’s just more to vacuum and clean. But I have four on my couch. I think the trick is, balance and not overdo it. Otherwise, they can be just a pain. I like my pillows to be usable too. Mine are down filled and washable. They are functionable and usable.
Good advises, just not the one about to put plants in trash after five years, better to look for a place for them outside ir replant them in a bigger place.
I have a question about the ceiling fans. Are you suggesting replacing them with just a light fixture? Or are you saying replace them IF they are unattractive and outdated? I'm wondering because I'm debating on this exact thing in my home. I would love to know your thoughts. Thanks!👍
+Jen Rand Hi Jen - Replace the ceiling fan if they are dated and unattractive. Also do not choose a fan if it has a light where you look up and see light bulbs. It does not look good and the light is too harsh. Thanks for watching!

Great tips although it'd be nice to see them in a real life home to see how they upgrade the look. Also, telling people to toss their faux plants every 5 years makes for more trash being dumped into our landfills. If they're out of strong direct sunlight and buying timeless arrangements will make them last much longer than 5 years if you must have them. Or just take your own nature pictures and frame them.
Hands down ,the best decorating advice I've heard in a while...
We added crown molding in one bedroom so far and it looks amazing. Thanks for the tip!

Leslie J Manu.. Molding not modeling
Leslie J Manu: I liked that there were only five tips. I realized I have a 17-year old floral arrangement in a bedroom--it's going out TODAY.
