I feel you with how film prices have been. I too started shooting film in 2016 and almost gave it up with how unforgiving self-processing color film was. But I redirected to black and white in 2017 and have been doing it ever since and have found it rather feasible as well to self-process. I’ll miss buying 20 rolls of 36 EXP Tri-X for around $100, but we have to do with what we got.
Wow, film prices are really high. I remember when a roll of film was like a dollar or two. Will be interesting to see what you do to the digital photo to make it more film-like. I've found film to be softer in tone and color than the sharp lines of digital. Film is more dream-like. Good topic for this vid.
It's crazy how much they increased in price in such a short amount of time! The softer tone of film is something I love, so I'm hoping I can figure out how to make my digital images look the same. Thanks for watching!!
You are right! Film prices ARE outrageous. I switched and have been shooting digital for almost three decades. The Nikon Z6ii is my daily shooter. The Z6ii is an amazing camera. I went out at 3:00 am to capture some night images and some long exposures. I took two cameras: my Z6ii and my Nikon FM film camera both with the same size lenses. AMAZING, the Z6ii images looked as if I had shot them at high noon. (this camera is a low light monster). Managed to shoot several more shots with the Z6ii, different, apertures and different ISO (from 800 to 51,000). My FM camera was loaded with Kodak Portra 800, I did NOT have my tripod sho I could not use it. Of course this is 2023, digital is the way to go, I still will try to shoot a couple of film rolls per year. THANKS for your post!
Great video and photography! I’m retired and have rediscovered shooting with old refurbished film SLRs for over a year and a half. I don’t care how much film has gone up in price or even if it continues to get more expensive, as long as film continues to be available, I’m going to shoot with it.
Aussie here. Film prices are definately too high but for me shooting film makes me slow down and make sure the image in the viewfinder is worth recording.
I have a love/hate relationship with shooting film. After 15 years of nothing but digital, at the beginning of COVID in 2020, I got back into shooting film. I rationalized my film habit by telling myself film would not account for more than 25% of my photography. That seemed ok 2 years ago. However, I went away for the Labor Day weekend and forgot to bring the film I recently bought. I had some color film that cost $13 per roll and some b&w that cost me $8 per roll. But I forgot to bring the film with me. First problem I encountered was that BestBuy, Target and Walmart were all out of film. I found one roll of Fuji 400 at RiteAid....$21 dollar. The developing and scanning will cost me $15 more. I'm not sure it's worth it. I remember the 1990s, when there was a discount drug store in the area called Pharmhouse. I could get Konica, Agfa or Scotch color film---$1.46 for a 24 exposure roll and $2.68 for 36 exposure roll. When I wanted black and white film or some Velvia, I'd go to the local camera shop and pick through the bin of about to expire film for a bargain. These day, even expired film is outrageously expensive. Luckily there are some new or recently revived companies releasing black and white film that is cheaper than Kodak or Fuji. Ever time I say I'm going to stop shooting film, I get some amazing scans back that I know I couldn't have done with digital and I keep going.
Just bought Kodak Gold 200 and with processing costs me AU$36 per 24x roll! But love the look. Like you, have both digital and film cameras and use my Minolta sparingly!!
I shoot film (b&w) because I enjoy the darkroom analog printing process and the results it produces. I'd shoot digital all day long otherwise; so much more convenient.
I returned to film shooting in 2022 and I was shocked by the cost of even inexpensive film. I must say that in my area the cost of the film is even higher. On the other hand, since one of my digital cameras is Nikon D600, and I have a number of lenses of this system, I bought several Nikon film SLR bodies, some of them (for example, Nikon F-601) cost as much as 1 roll of Ultramax 400! But if you add the cost of developing and scanning, then the total cost goes up even more. However, the result of my first roll was quite encouraging and I decided it was definitely worth shooting on film. At least from time to time.
You have to shop around. I bought a ton of film two years ago and was shocked today when I started thinking about buying some film. The prices are to the moon. I would guess this is temporary though and just keep looking for when prices get good at one of the reliable suppliers. If prices stay high for a while just keep an eye out for sales and buy a bunch when you get a good deal. Put it in the Freezer until you are ready to use it.

I started shooting film around a year ago. Back then a roll of Colourplus 36exp costed 10$ here in Sweden. In the spring they rasied it and a Kodak Gold 36 exp then costed 15$. After the summer I found out that it now costs 28$. I'm so jealous that it ONLY costs around 10-12$ in the US.

I live in Lithuania and here not only it has become crazy expensive, but very difficult to get a roll in general! They are always sold out everywhere and rarely restocked. In one of the film places I had to pay for 3 rolls in advance which will arrive only after 2 months so that no one else takes it! This is totally crazy. It really makes me want to use film less and consider buying digital. And shop assistants said they do not hope for any faster restocks in near future :/ Sad

It’s just not the same to use filters and Lightroom and photoshop to try and make it look like film. A bit part of that is the Bayer sensor where the megapixels are a fraction of the real resolution.
