    I'm just shy of 61, and I've been trailrunning in Vibram FiveFingers (Bikilas, Spyridons, V-Trail 2.0) since 2012. I've raced trail Halfs with several thousand feet of vert in them, and been on the podium, I train in them year round on rugged, steep, trails, and run Rim-To-River and Rim-To-Rim in them several times a year at the Grand Canyon. My daughter joined me in running in them, also in 2012, age 12, trained and raced in them (until she was too fast for them) in high school, and still runs in them. She's run 6 Rim-To-Rims and 1 Rim-To-River with me, in them. We have vids posted on the channel.
    Mr. Condon, if this is truly your first time running in them, may I suggest that you follow Vibram's instructions for SLOWLY transitioning into them. Otherwise, especially at your age and weight, you are at a very high and significant risk of injury. This is a major concern, literally, there's about a 100% that you will be injured.
    Regarding your running form: At your age, weight, and running speed, you will not be landing up on your toes in what I call, "Princess Prance" style of running. You will be running somewhat flat-footed, which is completely normal at slow speeds. You'll find that your feet touch slightly to the outside, which is how the feet transmit terrain conditions to the brain, in order to map the ground, and after that initial touchdown, the entire foot will set down. I can see in that short clip of you running toward the camera, that you don't engage the front of the legs, in order to generate some knee lift, and again, this is fairly normal for your speed, your age, and your weight. In about a year, you'll look like a completely different runner, and all of this will naturally be much improved.

    I run as much in my Xero as I can and it does wonder for strengthening my feet and lower legs.
    But after a running break I need to ease into it and i don't do massive volume in them, as I can really feel it in my feet/calves/tibs until I'm used to it again.
    I mix some Altra (wide toebox, zero drop) in, if I feel like my feet/legs need recovery.

      I love my Altra trail trainers. I 100% agree with you. Little and often.

    Going out for a run to me is a jog around the block not a marathon you header😂 I am a cyclist though so the word run sends a shiver up my spine 😉 loving the content💪

    Nice one Ryan, I’ve been looking at these and like you I’d heard they weren’t great for novice runners (which I definitely am) so it’s really good to hear that doesn’t tally with your account and that you liked them. They’re supposed to be really good for plantar fasciitis as well which I’ve not had but am a bit cautious of as I’m upping my mileage.
    I might give them a try for off-road running road here. Also recorded and going to edit a ‘cyclist tries Zwift run’ video as ive just bought a treadmill….does that make me a real runner now?!?
    Great video as always mate 👊

    Training barefoot around the house with a 20kg weight vest made a big difference for me on the winter fan dance👍
    The Jeff Galloway run walk training method may be of benefit for your barefoot running. I look forward to further updates

    My most enjoyable marathon was in five fingers. After transitioning I went to a who’s either 16 or 18 mile run and I was amazed afterwards I had the normal soreness, but my hips weren’t hurting me. My knees weren’t hurting me. My lower back wasn’t hurting me so I think two weeks later I just went out and didn’t 26. I think it was right around 26 and I was like wow that felt great now it wasn’t the fastest time I could’ve made but it felt good, so I use barefoot, running and barefoot as my training and if I want a really good time either on the road or in trails I take a shoot that’s appropriate for that distance I’m running 100 mile rugged trail race this year in the first half of it though, I’m gonna do Luna sandals and then probably I’m gonna switch over to a zero drop real shoe after that and I think that’s the combination you need

      @@toddboucher3302 sounds like a great plan. Good luck in your training for it. 100 miles is no nonsense. 💪🙌

      New pb. This year on my local parkrun from 46min to 39:32. Not bad for 57year. 250xp, to level up to level 32. Zwift cycling.

    interesting video. But I am confused about the socks in barefoot shoes. don‘t the socks make it tighter for the toes when toes have a double padding?

    • @RyanCondon
      @RyanCondon  9 місяців тому

      I wear Indinji socks with them. Theyre toe seperating and feel comfortable. The shoe isn't skin tight.

    Love all your content Ryan. Thanks. I dont understand the "Run like nature intended it" argument. I am 47 and running 40 k a week, and for sure nature never intended that :) And I would like to keep it up for 30-40 more years (an age nature never intended me to become) and therefore I think I need to spare my feet and joints as much beating as possible. Running naturally must mean running very short distances no more then a couple of times a week (either hunting or escaping)

    • @RyanCondon
      @RyanCondon  9 місяців тому

      I was coming at it from an ergonomic perspective and not a timescale one. I dont believe our feet need excessive cushioning or padding to run. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Bit of a random question relating to the shoes. Did you wear socks with them? Just wandering how you separate the toes wearing socks lol!

    i do 10k a couple of times a week in barefoot style shoes (xero). love them. reckon they help strengthen my feet/ankles and take pressure off my knees. can really feel the burn after 15k though

    For all the "naturalism" that you get from low-stack barefoot shoes, it's worth it to remember that our ancestors wouldn't have been running on concrete either. Soil and the savannah of Africa are very different from the concrete paths of modern-day. So be careful with trying to translate the technique that works on the former into the latter.

      I wasn't really taking directly about distant humans alone. I was talking about pre-Nike or pre-Adidas era ancestors too.
      They had hard surfaces, footpaths etc. They didn't wear cushioned soles.
      My point is, I'm trying to let my feet be feet.

    Chi running...

      Chi running = Straight forward lean with bent knees and the midfoot hitting the floor.
