Hey Matthew, thanks for the comments and feedback. There are quite a few different small details items on the C4's that are easily overlooked, and its always fun to share with fellow enthusiasts.
Those plastic Wagner sealed HLs were to save weight to put less strain on the nylon gears in the actuators...i made the mistake of "upgrading" to Sylvania HLs that were glass and in short order had to replace the actuators, though, they do sell brass gears so they can be rebuilt.
Very cool. I wasn't sure why they went to the plastic housings, but that makes sense. The problem with the brass gears is that they will destroy the plastic drive gear pellets over time. These headlight motors were definitely finicky pieces and had to almost have the perfect weight and balance to last long term.
Yep, they've been used as a test platform for new features and options to see how they work before integrating them into the rest of the fleet. Thanks for the comments👍.
Cool stuff, I bought a 1990 ZR-1 last year that had been sitting for several years. So I had a lot to do getting her going, I'm learning everything about this car, like the rear hatch releases, one in console and on the back of the door panels. Very nice machine you have, thanks for posting. 👍👍🏁🏁

Yeah my 96 auto has the Mobil 1 sticker as well but the hood may have been replaced at some point. Thanks for all the facts, I had no idea about most of the differences you explained. Great Video!
No problem, glad to share the trivia. Hood changes are pretty common with the C4's due to the size of the hood and difficulty in properly hiding repaired damage. Easier for the insurance company/body shop to buy another undamaged than hope a repair holds up over time.

The 90-93 interior is interchangeable with 94 -96, I know because I changed put most of the 94 -96 interior in my 91 coupe, and mostly due to the white lettering that looked right with the white body. However, some interchangeability will depend upon specific options, as sometimes a few dummy lights won't work. My 94 has PARK My 2007 HHR has the SCV feature. After a year and 3 " Vette technicians" I have a good reliable $8200 driver. If you buy a C4 be ready for some expenses
Yep, it's something I heard from a GM dealer rep back when I was selling them new. IIRC, he said they put them on the first 7 or so convertibles, and decided they didn't like the look of them so they quit installing them going forward. I have never been able to find one of those first built convertibles to see for myself, but the story always intrigued me.
Ironically, just this last week I was trying yet again to figure out if there's a "Balance" (Left/Right) control on the BOSE GOLD stereo and came upon the SCV 'knob' (again) and spent at least a minute wondering what the heck it was for, thanks for solving the mystery for me. Hey, uh, btw, any chance there's a humorous story behind the big 'dent' in the drywall in the wall next to your C4? lol Thanks for posting another good video, GL with the "Thumper"!
Richard, that's great to hear, glad I could help you out. The SCV feature is one of those tidbits that gets lost to time. I was wondering when somebody would ask about the busted drywall. It's a funny storey actually. I had my 69 Corvette on the wheel dollies and was trying to be smart and move it sideways in the garage to have more free space to work on it. When I leaned against the wall, my ass broke through the drywall right between the two studs. I had to tell my wife to quit feeding me so well🤣🤣.
Nice C4! Really looks great! Im a C4 fan, have been for many years. That year had some very diff features. Great content & vid qual. I sub’d so I can see more. Is the blue ‘Vette a ‘67? Tri-motor? Cant wait to see more of it too! Thanks much and best wishes for this new year & all forward to be Blessed for you.

The '96 has more gauge choices to cycle through in the LED window than a '94. I don't know about '95? My friend had a '96 Silver Collector Edition and I had a '94 Coupe and we noticed that side by side cycling through our dashes. I don't remember what the choice was "Trans Temp" or something like that etc. because I sold my C4 3 years ago.
Well, the plot thickens, thanks for the input. I am going to have to go out and take a look at the 86 convertible project car I have sitting in storage and see what's on there. Looks like they may have put those glass lights in there much earlier than I thought.
93 certainly has glass under-hood work lights, and my 93 also has no Bowling Green or Mobil 1 plate either, which may be something Callaway removed, but there is no evidence they were ever there. My 94 had the Mobil 1 label there.
I think I remember noticing that the Callaway cars had the Mobil 1 sticker removed, maybe it had something to do with them using a different type of oil in the Callawy builds. Thanks for the info on the glass headlights. Looks like they may have begun phasing them in around 93. Still collecting data points on that.
@@VetteSource Indeed :) And it is likely to be the only one in Australia for a while yet, it will almost certainly be the only Supernatural Ruby 40th convertible in Australia, since they only made two of them!
Hey Matthew, funny you should mention that. I just recently acquired an orphaned 1990 Toro Trofeo and have been brining it back to life. I made a video of it here - ua-cam.com/video/d6KfFSXG_QE/v-deo.html I could definitely use some items for it what kind of parts do you have available?
Thats interesting. I have never personally seen a 95 without the blacked out primered area between the turn sginal/cornering lamps. Are you referring to the late build cars at the end of the production year?
Can I get an OBD1 thing that will hook to my 94, like for the PC? That would be great. I have been taking to the place that has the machine, butt hey have lost their minds.
Sure, that will work just fine. The repair shops have abandoned all the "old" tech in favor of repairing new cars, which are easier to find parts for and diagnose with a quicker turnaround time..
Hey Jim, I have been hearing that from a few other owners of 88's and 89's. I am going to dig a little further and see if I can figure out what year they started changing them over. Thanks for the comment👍
oh yea, I have a thing for the C3 chrome bumper cars as well. There are a few of them laying around here also. If you haven't seen it, here is the video I published for the 69 Daytona Yellow 427 car last week - ua-cam.com/video/LvHYJwD_V6k/v-deo.html
Interesting. I have been getting some feedback that they did seem to appear on some of the earlier cars, but not consistently. I wonder if it was the supplier beginning to phase them in. Personally I have never run across any of them on the 94 and 95 cars I have dismantled for parts over the years.

Hey Mike, good morning. I have seen some of the earlier cars with the glass lenses. I think that GM stopped producing the plastic lenses due to them melting, and began offering only the glass lenses for replacement. It may be that 88 was the first year they were installed on the assembly line. Thanks for the info👍
Anyone know if the later oval shaped tail light "Bumper" will fit on an earlier 1989? They are much better looking than the earlier style. Nice video thanks for the info..

Thanks for the comment. You are correct, all of the 95's should have it. I just acquired an early build (21st day) Aqua Metallic 1996 LT4 and was surprised to see the Mobil 1 sticker under the hood. You can see the car here - ua-cam.com/video/_TuRGfxqTk4/v-deo.html
@@VetteSource very cool! I saw an aqua one driving here in Abilene, Tx the other day. I was in the family ride and wasn't able to turn around to talk to him.
They're definitely rare to come across in the wild. Most of the time you will see them on display in the car shows and cruise is. Good to see people are still using them.
That's what happens when your big butt breaks through the drywall when your trying to move the car over while it's on dollies. I know not to do that again😆
Hmmmm... My 96 has the Mobile 1 emblem up there. Mine must be aftermarket; as I feel it is far more likely that someone added that sticker to mine than peeled it off yours lol.
Yep, definitely possible. Corvette enthusiasts like to add emblems or other such markers to personalize their cars. Of course, it's also possible you have an earlier hood on your car. Easy way to check is look at the inner fender wells on the hood. If they are riveted in place, that is definitely a 96 hood. The earlier hoods have them bolted in with T30 torx fasteners like the lower inner fenders.
@@paulmoss7940 I think what we have learned about these stickers so far is that early 96 c4's had the stickers... then they ran out about halfway through the run and just stopped putting them on.
@@michaelthebarbarian3380 I'm thinking mine is late like sept. or oct. I will have to check, originally sold in NC. In the factory literature there is a brochure about using only Mobil1 . There is also a factory tape that has been published on YT by another LT4 owner. Jeff Gordon does some commentary on it.
If you don't mind sharing the last 5 digits of your VIN I can compare it to the others I have researched to get closer to figuring out when they stopped installing them.
Unfortunately I'm not sure who the original OEM manufacturer/supplier to GM was and it may be something that is difficult to figure out after so many years. You are correct though, the aftermarket units are very inferior in comparison to the late C4 factory installed pieces. At least having something to replace the worn originals is better than nothing, but its still no fun when they leak so bad.

That's cool, never would have thought of that even though it makes perfect sense. It first appeared on the 1990 Corvettes equipped with the Delco Bose Gold CD player, so it was an often overlooked option that many never noticed, much less used.
There will be a white label in the driverside door jamb that lists the date of production. Also take a look at the last five digits of the VIN. That will be the build number of your car. There were a little over 20,000 Corvettes built that year, so you can tell how early or late it was produced by that number.
Definitely an an early car, build #1578. Could be the the "park" telltale may have started earlier than I thought. Any chance your cluster could have been changed out?
Ok, gotcha. It's mounted right above the battery on the frame to cowl support. You'll see the vacuum lines coming out of the backside of the assembly, along with the throttle cable running back to the ASR unit.
I recommend applying dielectric grease to the weatherstripping once or twice a year depending on the cars use. It isn't petroleum based and won't cause long term damage to the foam/rubber👍.

Great trivia. But a quick question. When you were talking about the ECM, you said on yours it has an ALDL connector. Wasn't the 96 equipped with an OBD2 port?
It is an OBDII port, but in the field we use AlDL/OBDIi terminology interchangeably.
I Iike the 1985 L98
Yep, 85's are great C4's, first year of the TPI, and with the 4 speed and Z51 quite fun cars to cruise on a regular basis.
I have a 85 L98 not stock anymore it’s getting modifying same Engine automatic. I just did the interior in the new cluster I am putting headers and The borla exhaust for now
You'll like the headers and the Borla exhaust. It definitely wakes up the TPI engjnes.
I had the plastic headlights on my '93 Vette.
Yep, it appears the plastic headlights started showing up earlier than I had initially thought. We were able to figure it out in some of the comment discussions. Thanks for sharing👍.
My '91 ZR1 had plastic Wagner headlights, but I changed them out for Sylvania Silver Stars.
My 94 has PARK
My 2007 HHR has the SCV feature.
After a year and 3 " Vette technicians" I have a good reliable $8200 driver.
If you buy a C4 be ready for some expenses
Sure, but what else are you going to spend your money on, booze and women? The Corvette may be less trouble in the long run😁.
I never heard about the GS Verts that got out with the flares. That would look strange with 285 tires.
Great info !!!
Glad you found it helpful, thanks for the comment👍
Ironically, just this last week I was trying yet again to figure out if there's a "Balance" (Left/Right) control on the BOSE GOLD stereo and came upon the SCV 'knob' (again) and spent at least a minute wondering what the heck it was for, thanks for solving the mystery for me. Hey, uh, btw, any chance there's a humorous story behind the big 'dent' in the drywall in the wall next to your C4? lol
Thanks for posting another good video, GL with the "Thumper"!
@@VetteSource LOL! Great story! Thanks!
Glad to share👍. My kids still mess with me about it.
Thanks for the feedback and sub, glad you're enjoying the videos👍. You're correct, the 67 is an L71 435 HP Tri-Power and is the channel avatar. I have a playlist of videos featuring the 67 you can check out-

Happy New Year to you as well.
Interesting, never heard of that. I will have to take a look at a couple of 94 and 95's to compare them against the 96's. Thanks for the comment👍
Automatic Transmission Temp was added in 1995.
@@nomakewan excellent info! Thanks for sharing👍
My original 86 has glass under hood lighting.
Well, the plot thickens, thanks for the input. I am going to have to go out and take a look at the 86 convertible project car I have sitting in storage and see what's on there. Looks like they may have put those glass lights in there much earlier than I thought.
@@VetteSource Maybe someone replaced it with glass. Are they the same exact size and shape? Minutae.
Yep, after 34 years there are quite a few variables that can happen with parts that were installed on cars originally.
@@VetteSource Mine is an early 93, so that is possible. It is Callaway Supernatural #001
Now that's 😎. There's always something satisfying about having the first or last of a specialty car.
@@VetteSource Indeed :) And it is likely to be the only one in Australia for a while yet, it will almost certainly be the only Supernatural Ruby 40th convertible in Australia, since they only made two of them!
Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo’s we’re my obsession. Getting out of them now unfortunately. Do you work on those? Need parts?
Hey Matthew, funny you should mention that. I just recently acquired an orphaned 1990 Toro Trofeo and have been brining it back to life. I made a video of it here -
ua-cam.com/video/d6KfFSXG_QE/v-deo.html
I could definitely use some items for it what kind of parts do you have available?
Depending on the production date some 95 have the front bumper colored between the lights
@@VetteSource yeah, do you know where I can find one of those interfaces for my PC? This might be a million dollar idea.
When I take the gas cap off my 1991 C4 Corvette air comes out is there supposed to be much air pressure in the fuel tank
The escaping air is a normal occurrence in these older systems before they moved to the new systems with the built-in vapor recovery
My 99 lt tahoe's radio has the scv but its labeled power
Hmm, interesting.
88has glass under hood lights too.
Hey Jim, I have been hearing that from a few other owners of 88's and 89's. I am going to dig a little further and see if I can figure out what year they started changing them over. Thanks for the comment👍
👍👍👍
Thanks for the feedback, Monty
I wanna see some big block content bro that thing looks sweet
For sure, I've enjoyed having it as a garage ornament. Time to wake it up and terrorize the streets....
What year is it?
67 Coupe, 427/435 HP 3X2 TriPower. My nickname for it is Thor. This is the car I used for the channel artwork and avatar.
Heck yeah man owning a c2 is high up on my list, I’d like to get a 69-72 c3 one day also.
oh yea, I have a thing for the C3 chrome bumper cars as well. There are a few of them laying around here also. If you haven't seen it, here is the video I published for the 69 Daytona Yellow 427 car last week -
ua-cam.com/video/LvHYJwD_V6k/v-deo.html
Plastic headlights on 94 also. My 94, which I bought new had them too
Interesting. I have been getting some feedback that they did seem to appear on some of the earlier cars, but not consistently. I wonder if it was the supplier beginning to phase them in. Personally I have never run across any of them on the 94 and 95 cars I have dismantled for parts over the years.
@@VetteSource here is a link, scroll down. States some early ZR1 s had plastic. I saved my plastic ones when they burned out...not willing to pay the huge price for NOS ones.
mirrockcorvette.com/c4-parts-guide/lights/
Excellent info, thanks for sharing. Now I will have to go back to my inventory stockpile to double check for the plastic headlight. 😁
My 88 has the glass under hood light lenses also
Hey Mike, good morning. I have seen some of the earlier cars with the glass lenses. I think that GM stopped producing the plastic lenses due to them melting, and began offering only the glass lenses for replacement. It may be that 88 was the first year they were installed on the assembly line. Thanks for the info👍
Nevermind u just said it
Anyone know if the later oval shaped tail light "Bumper" will fit on an earlier 1989? They are much better looking than the earlier style. Nice video thanks for the info..
No problem, glad to do it👍. The later bumper will fit, however the belt line trim will be different so you will need to update the rest of the trim on the car with the newer 91-96 style trim.
Map Pocket ? Well you just told me something about my 96 C4 I did not know... I had to go out and see if there is anything in there. I have a red with black C4 with only 36k on it and it looks like new. Thanks for the Map Pocket ?
Up Date on Map Pocket...... I found 62 cents
You're welcome👍. Sharing the information about these awesome cars is what uts all about.
Cool, won't buy much nowadays but it was still there. Like a treasure hunt when we were kids.
my 90 has glass underhood lights
Great, thanks for sharing👍. I will have an update on what I found in regards to the glass lamps in my next C4 Corvette trivia video.
The gauges have white print instead of yellow up to 93
My '95 has the Mobile 1 placard under the hood.
Thanks for the comment. You are correct, all of the 95's should have it. After doing some further research this week, it looks like they stopped putting the Mobil 1 emblems between VN#'s 3500-4200 in 1996. I just acquired an early build (21st day) Aqua Metallic 1996 LT4 and was surprised to see the Mobil 1 sticker under the hood.
You can see the car here -
ua-cam.com/video/_TuRGfxqTk4/v-deo.html
@@VetteSource very cool! I saw an aqua one driving here in Abilene, Tx the other day. I was in the family ride and wasn't able to turn around to talk to him.
They're definitely rare to come across in the wild. Most of the time you will see them on display in the car shows and cruise is. Good to see people are still using them.
@@VetteSource it's rare to see any C4 anymore, it feels like. The aqua one I saw was pulling into a restaurant. Must have been a hot date.
Could have been, maybe the Corvette was making up for having to hide his face behind a mask when out in public😂😂.
@ 1 minute......what happened to the garage wall?
Mine has the sticker 100% stock but may have been dealer installed during prep.
If you don't mind me asking. What brand were the seals for the a and b pillar? The ones I purchased are to hard and leak worse than the original.
Great video!!!! Is there any way you can contact me. I have a question about my interior orange lights that I can’t find an answer. Half of mine have stopped working.
Alan, YT doesn't allow for public posting of contact info for privacy reasons, but you can always send me a DM through IG or email to vettesource@hotmail.com
I know Harley does it cause when I come to a red light my radio lowers it self down
That's cool, never would have thought of that even though it makes perfect sense. It first appeared on the 1990 Corvettes equipped with the Delco Bose Gold CD player, so it was an often overlooked option that many never noticed, much less used.
My 95' has 'Park' instead of 'Brake' for the parking brake light ???
Interesting. Do you happen to know if your car is an early or late build?
@@VetteSource I'm not sure how to tell /:
There will be a white label in the driverside door jamb that lists the date of production. Also take a look at the last five digits of the VIN. That will be the build number of your car. There were a little over 20,000 Corvettes built that year, so you can tell how early or late it was produced by that number.
@@VetteSource Thank you! I checked at it notes mfd by 08/94 and the last 5 are 01578. I think it was one of the earlier ones.
Definitely an an early car, build #1578. Could be the the "park" telltale may have started earlier than I thought. Any chance your cluster could have been changed out?
How are you doing Sir? Do you know where I can find the 2 way check valve?
Hey buddy, do you mean the heater one way valve?
@@VetteSource the valve that controls the cruise control and the hvac system, thanks Sir!
Ok, gotcha. It's mounted right above the battery on the frame to cowl support. You'll see the vacuum lines coming out of the backside of the assembly, along with the throttle cable running back to the ASR unit.
@@VetteSource thank you very much Sir!
i have a 1989 c4 . weather striping looks good. What do you recommend to apply to it for preservation?
I recommend applying dielectric grease to the weatherstripping once or twice a year depending on the cars use. It isn't petroleum based and won't cause long term damage to the foam/rubber👍.
@@VetteSource thank you
No problem, anytime. 👍
This was a 91 or a 93 or maybe 95 no, no 96.........
Really, what makes you think that?
@@VetteSource Yeah what makes him think that? Had to side with you, can't abide with those that disagree just to aggravate others. Really enjoying your videos, they are a wealth of information.
Yep, it's an unfortunate side effect of UA-cam. However, I also have lots of great conversations with like minded enthusiasts to compensate for it.
Quit touching the car!
That would be impossible. I love it too much, plus we have a complicated history together🤣.
You got a habit for tapping shit
Good catch, that is something I have a habit of doing. Thanks for the fesdback👍.
I’ll stick with my ears n fingers to adjust my car audio. So I pulled that crappy stock junk out years ago (all of it) heard it when I first bought it and just knew that it was coming out A.S.A.P. Now I’ll never go back till I sell her then they can have all the stock crap. Cassette was junk cds sounded like shit and electronic peeping bussing shit when u turned the volume up n down. MAN what more can I say about stock (NOT MUCH). ALPINE BABY ALL THE WAY( NO ) TURNIN BACK.
Hey Mark, lots of guys like the premium aftermarket units. I'm a fan of Kenwood myself. However, it sounds like you were never able to hear your Bose Gold system when it was functioning properly. They're very impressive, and surprise many people when they find out it's a "stock" system. Thanks for the comments👍.
@@VetteSource when I was using it for the short time Before I pulled it out. I always set fade to the front speakers and let the rears take the bass. But now I have bass up the booty that stock can’t compare to in a million years. Lows and mid punch so I’m good.
Yep, for certain kinds of music the aftermarket systems are what you need for sure.
@@VetteSource if u match up a really good system and adjust it all so there’s no distortion everything will last as long as u own it.

I adore C4 Corvettes. Don’t own one myself(or any Corvette for that matter) yet, but much to my surprise I didn’t realize that a lot of these different details between earlier and later model years aren’t noticed often
Hey Jon, thanks for the comments👍. There is quite a bit of lore and detail about Corvettes that the fans obsess over. Its all in good fun, just makes it interesting even if you don't have one in the garage. You wouldn't believe the amount of detail and trivia surrounding the vintage Corvettes of the 50's and 60's. You can really get in the weeds with those.
95 Monte Carlo had speed compensating volume.
Yep, quite a few of the higher end GM cars received them during those mid 90's model years. I remember detailing them for customers when they would come in to look at the Monte Carlos and Impala. Thanks for the comment👍
Technically you are incorrect about the painted area in front of the car between the turn signal in the side marker light is that the first time that came out body color is 95 pace car check it out
