Button board was the lath. It was gypsum between paper, very similar to modern drywall. It did not have horse hair. The brown coat of plaster that went onto the button board had horsehair as did most brown coats in plaster even on wood lath or metal. The coats of plaster could potentially have asbestos depending on when it was put on. It didn’t become common until the 20s I believe. Some people would add it to their plaster, others did not. Even if the house was built before asbestos was used, there could be lots of repairs that have it.
