  • An excerpt of a Rare Recording from the archives of the Anād Foundation!
In one of the most fascinating Gurbāṇī Kīrtana concerts by the legendary Bhai Sahib Avtar Singh Ragi at the tercentenary of the Khalsa celebrated at Sri Anandpur Sahib, Bhai Baldeep Singh played the instrument he revived in its pristine form - the Joṛī. Thanks to the revival work done by #BhaiBaldeep Singh in not just reviving the name and the instrument but also the original playing style that had become extinct, it is wonderful that the instrument is now being played the world over by young enthusiasts but especially by several renowned artists.
After a brief #Maṅgalācaraṇa (4:10 mins) that is traditionally sung in the 12-beat #cārtāla cycle, #BhaiAvtarSingh sings a rare #Dhrupad (Dhurpada, from 4:13 mins marker) - a vintage #śabad-rīta in #Rāga #Brindabani #Sarang from the Darbār Sāhib tradition in which he sang several variations, improvisations and #ālāpa sequences. Bhai Sahib Swaran Singh Ragi was the very gracious accompanist on the other #Joṛī. His playing of the 12-beat ṭhēkā is very particular.
After the Kīrtana Chowṅkī, late Bhai Dilbagh Singh walked up to Bhai Baldeep Singh and hugged him off the ground and famously said, 'today, you looted our hearts (aj tāṅ tusīṅ dil hī luṭṭ leyā)!' #BhaiDilbaghSingh, #BhaiGulbaghSingh, Bhai Devinder Singh and Bhai Iqbal Singh are all seated behind along with others and their engagement in the singing and playing is notable.
    Filming Issues:
The location was not really set for filming as the backlit backdrop was playing havoc with the color/light and shadow dynamics. The camera was set at least 150 feet from the stage due to the security ring. Professor Devinder Singh and Professor Brijinder Singh Rattan were both in attendance helped manage the Sony #VX1000 camera that was set up by Bhai Baldeep Singh. The audio too was from the PA system.
