  • Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) star in Netflix's Bridgerton season 3, following in the footsteps of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).
    In this video, I discuss the friendship between Penelope Featherington and Lady Danbury that was a recurring storyline in "Romancing Mister Bridgerton" but has not been shown thus far in season 3 of the Netflix series! Subscribe for more to come!

    I can imagine Lady Danbury acting as a Fairy Godmother in Benedict’s season. We saw her forcing him to escort her, so I can see that morphing into a teasing relationship. Then, she could potentially be a family friend of Sophie’s father and Lady Danbury could be helping her in her journey. Something like that

    It's so weird how in book 1 and 2 LD was barely there and yet they managed to incorporate her into Simon's and Kate's life very well in the show (cause she is an interesting character, so of course it was a good idea), but in the respective season to book 4 where she has an actually important role from the source material they decided to not even have her talk to the main characters at all and completly away from their story/the main plot.

      If her kids/family were constantly around, I of course would've expected to see more of that as her storyline but seasons 1-2 basically set her up as a mentor to help these young, foolish people get out of their own way (while being impeccably dressed!) 😆

      Penelope and lady Danbury are basically best friends by the end of book 4 and literally named her child after her. I don’t get how they could take out that relationship. I saw an interview and one of the show runners said they wanted lady Danbury to have her own storyline instead of being wrapped up in the love story of the main couple. Except that Francesca is her pet project for the season. So she still has a pet project. But it’s not Penelope. Why would they do that? If she is supposed to have her own storylines and not be involved in the love story of the season, why is she involved with Francesca at all? She has a conversation in the spinoff where Violet mentions Penelope off handedly and then tells the queen Penelope’s name. But they have never spoken even a passing hello to each other. So sad. :(

    The biggest issue I have show Penn in the book is that they write her as an alienated loser when in the books she is part of the Bridgerton family loosely in the beginning and much more as the books progress. Penn is also good friends with Francesca. They are a trio of Eloise, Pen and Franchesca. I have no idea why they deverge this much from the books. I would like the show if I didn’t read the books but as a book reader the best storylines got trashed.

    I hope to see the lady danbury and Penelope friendship in part 2.
    I feel now Lady Danbury can respect her after seeing she did not need her help in the matchmaking and is left impressed. Now she is curious about Ms. Featherington, I mean Ms. Bridgerton (hopefully).
    And considering that Lady Danbury was part of the LW plot, I get them saving it for part 2, but there should had been a couple scenes in seasons 2 and 3 establishing their friendship to show some of their similarities like the book did.

    Can someone please tell me the purpose of the queen of the season? Im aware that she's helping Francesca find a husband cause she the diamond/sparkler. However, in season's 1 and season 2 the queen was hunting lady whistlwdown. It was never said but the vibe around rhe matter made it seem as if queen Charlotte would ruin the person/family responsibile and since she is a queen maybe even "end" them. I know this kinda show wont go so far as to end Penelope but Im concerned as to why the threat of the queen is gone. It was in the book and show but this seasons its almost like the writers want to undo that. Correct me if Im wrong but this season make it seem like the queen wishes to become allies with the person in her kingdom whose has insulted her multiple times....

  • @DrNerdinger

    I agree that the relationship between Lady Danbury and Penelope is an unfortunate erasure in the show (my guess is they wanted to get rid of all of Penelope‘s friends so she‘d be left with nobody but Colin to lean on in her search for a husband). One thing I don‘t love about the book and these conversations between Penelope and Lady Danbury is that we are always being told that Penelope is very sharp but honestly I don‘t see her saying that many witty or exceptionally intelligent things. The same is actually true for Lady Danbury - we are continuously being told that she is very intelligent but to me she mostly sounds very full of herself. In my opinion her character is infinitely improved by being played by Adjoa Adoh who convinces me of her intelligence when the book couldn‘t. It‘s a common feature in romance storytelling that we are being told a female character is smart with little concrete evidence of that fact - I often feel the writing would need to be a lot sharper itself to make this more convincing. I‘m not wowed by Penelope pointing at Lady Danbury as Lady Whistledown. It‘s the most obvious guess available.

      Well, to be frank, in my humble opinion, the books ain't that good. And it is difficult to have someone seem particularly witty when everyone is somewhat witty.* Makes it harder for them to stand out in that way.
      And yeah, I liked Pen and Lady D in the books I have read and they had some good lines but didn't seem exceptionally brilliant either. None of them did but we are constantly said that they are...
      Also, yes, Lady D in the books while entertaining can come off as arrogant and full of herself.
      *But then again witty dialogue is the only thing the books really have for them, IMHO.

      Yeah, I really fooled myself into thinking LD and the queen would somehow be involved with Pen considering they were involved with the main couples of the previous seasons. So when they both talked about Pen in ep1 I really thought they would head in a direction like "instead of picking a dimond we'll do something different and try to marry off the wallflower" like, as a "challenge" and Pen would then struggle to write good things about her being "the queen's project" in LW due to her low self steam, then instead of Colin teaching her to be helself it would be LD. That while Violet helps Francesca who doesn't like the spotlight, so is trying to go barely noticed by the ton. But I was wrong and it was more the opposite, the queen and LD were placed in the Francesca plot and Violet was the one who helped Colin lol.

    I understand the importance of Penelope and Lady Danbury's relationship in the books. It was nice, but I must say since Lady Danbury is a black woman in the show, I don't necessarily like the concept of her main purpose constantly being the stereotypical and borderline racist trope of being the magical black person who is always helping others find happiness and never getting a chance at real happiness of her own. And that is saying it in the nicest way. Queen Charlotte really started this disdain for the fact that they only really give Lady story if she is suffering or being the help of others, and I'm over it. I need more for her.

      Oh I DESPISED her material in the QC spin-off. I have absolutely nothing nice to say about what they did to her (except for the fact that the actress they cast to play her is great!)
      I usually don't bring it up at this point because it feels like kicking a hornet's nest but I really thought that after the enormous backlash they got for THAT part of the story in season one (the backlash was so big that even I was aware of it and I didn't even start watching the show until the immediate lead-up to season two) that they would've known better than to go and do THAT in the Bridgerton-verse AND YET...??
      I can't fully give my opinions about Lady Danbury's season 3 storyline though (YET) because of the review embargo but I'll see how the viewers feel about it once the episodes are out and my episode 5-6 review gets published.

      I actually dont care what color she is, she is like an aristocratic, half polite Auntie Mame and I wish they had kept that in the first half. Old enough to be politely rude and people to think any eccentricities are merely age.

      @@heathercontois4501 You're missing my point entirely. Race does matter and should be considered when you are casting POC for roles that were originally written for white characters. That hasn't been considered with Lady Danbury and it has been a disservice to her character on Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte.

      @@veronicaknowsbest I think Lady Danbury is less of a fairy godmother type and more of pillar of society that enjoys meddling in the marriage mart. In the Bridgerton world matchmaking is power and Agatha likes to flex her status in a benign way. Also, I would have loved to see her get closer to Penelope and be astute enough to realize she and Colin were a thing before anyone else. I also think it would have been cool for her to form suspicions about Whistledown and use her influence to help defuse the situation.

      100% agree about her being the magical black person of this series (considering she’s the only main black character makes it even worse) and being happy that she wasn’t used in this sense for Colin and Penelope’s season, but they still kinda used her like that for Francesca’s storyline so it completely negates what they’ve said they’re trying to do with her (which is have her own storyline). This makes me even more annoyed, because if you’re still gonna have her as the magical black person, have it be with the main characters and not a side plot that most don’t care about as much🤷🏾‍♀️

    I think if one dialogue they should have had was to have Pen speak to lady Danbury about how the Bridgerton helped her over the years but to show how she is trying to not rely on them too much ever since her relationship with Eloise ended and post Colin training

      And Lady Danbury always seems to have a sense of who's who, what's going on, etc. in the ton ~ we saw that in season 2 when she was giving the Sharmas everyone's information so they could scope out potential suitors for Edwina. You don't just magically download that information into your brain overnight. She was also going over suitors with Charlotte in season 3 so YEAH, let her have a conversation with Penelope! Even if it wasn't a full-blown storyline, would it have hurt to do ONE conversation to give a wink and a nod to the book readers? 😂

      I miss Kate's VIBRANT colourful outfits but I suppose they were pushing towards the "fusion" angle of blending her aesthetic with the Bridgerton blue so I haven't said as much about that (plus she's barely in season 3 so there isn't as much material to judge) 👀🤭

    How come in season 1 & 2 they managed to give Lady Danbury a important role and connection to the main characters (that did NOT exist in the books they´re based on) but when it comes to season 3 Lady Danbury has no impact on neither Colin nor Penelope (unlike in the book this season is based on). I mean in the books Colin and Penelope name their first daughter (and first child) Agatha, after Lady Danbury. Like how are they gonna do that? Are they even gonna do that? I hope that they stick to the gender, names and ages of Polins children to their book counterpart (yes I know that Polins first child then would be born pretty late but idk). With Simon and Daphne it makes sense for changing the gender of their first child from female to male bc A LOT of symbolism etc. But Polin doesn´t need that. The producers probably give Prudence and Filipa girls and Pen a boy but tbh Pen doesn´t need that. She doesn´t want and doesn´t need the Featherington title and estate

    Is mimosa with brunch an American thing? I've had quite a few brunches at different establishments and none of them served mimosa with it. I've seen a few with prosecco, but that's the only alcoholic drink I've ever encountered at brunch.

    While I would have loved to see the Penelope-Lady Danbury friendship from the book, I loved Penelope and Genevieve de la Croix. And wouldn't have minded more of it. It's not the same as Pen and Agatha, but Gen is the older woman supporting and giving advice to the younger one.
    I also enjoyed the one scene between Pen and Fran. Again wouldn't have minded more of it.
    Or the Lady D Violet friendship... And generally speaking, yes, any time they show more female friendships in a positive, uplifting way was great. More. Of. It.
    I am amused that most os the things you miss from the book include Colin beingv"dragged"😂. I do think he got it too easy in the show, though.

    The developers sacrificed Lady Danbury to increase the Queen. I think that was too bad. Lady Danbury was such a good character in the books. We only see glimpses of her acerbic tongue and her wisdom in the various episodes.

  • @liv97497
    @liv97497 3 місяці тому

    But this is an obvious consequence of how the show built the other relationships. Queen Charlotte gave us so much background that didn't exist in the original books, it essentially changed the characters, especially the queen and Lady Danbury. She has her established relationships. She was so present in the first two storylines because they were her family (or as good as). But she has no established relationship with Penelope. And they changed the whole plot of how the romance happens, with the whole husband search thing (a positive change in my opinion made necessary by the timeline and previous events), so the triggers to Colin's realization of his feelings also change. Trying to fit Lady D into all this would've made it clunky and awkward. Going forward in the show, there will be more and more changes, as any adaptation of a long story must have. You HAVE to take those for granted and understand that the show has inevitably morphed into something different than the books.

  • @moodymint
    @moodymint 3 місяці тому

    Totally agree! Either Lady D or Madame D would have made more sense than the stupid plot of Colin giving Pen "lessons" which never really happened anyway. All we needed for the Colin plot was to have him get jealous when she starts to attract suitors, and then let her girlfriends help her. I esp missed Madame D, she was so great in seasons 1 and 2.

    I think the reason Lady Danbury doesn’t take notice of Penelope and Collin in the show is that she is focused on executing the Queen’s plans for the “sparkler” match, which she hopes will be the man she chose for Francesca. I’m thinking Lady Danbury will make a funny remark about how she didn’t realize or knew they’d end up together at some point in part 2, like a random remark to tie to the book but might feel random to viewers that haven’t watched the show. I haven’t seen part 2 yet, just a gut feeling 🤞

    They honestly did miss out on alot with lady D not just with pen but with kate this season i genuinely think kate could be sort of a prodigy for lady D she resembles her in many ways while pen is very similar to violet in alot of ways. About pen i kinda am not that bothered by it and it's mostly because book pen has not been kind to her own gender and most of her victims have been women so i think isolating her from women is important in showing that she is distant from her peers and is why she's so free in being cruel to them sometimes as opposed to eloise who's now trying to be closer to women , pen i think views women as more of an enemy than men because the people who hurt her most were women and i think it's necessary for her to realise this and start fixing it and redeeming herself before she can be close to women again

    • @elisa4620
      @elisa4620 3 місяці тому

      She is also king to other women.
      She has been shown several times, in persona and through LW to be kind to other women.
      The only women she has been un king to where her bullies (Cressida, her family and to some extent Marina) or when trying to help/save someone she cared about (Eloise, Colin).
      So I don't think that she should be alienated from other women as she is not better or worst than them in that regard.
