Arya is playing Shae, as she is portraying someone who is about to get rapped and was virgin. Shae of course was not virgin when she met Tyrion, but in his trial she claims she was before she met Tyrion. And her strangled body was carried out by the kings guard. Even though Cercei commands not to speak of her, in words of Areo Hotah "someone always tells". So basically there is a play written about Westeros using the rumors that reached Bravos in honor of the envoy.
A misericorde (from French word miséricorde 'mercy') was a long, narrow knife, used from the High Middle Ages to deliver the death stroke (the mercy stroke, hence the name of the blade, derived from the Latin misericordia, "act of mercy") to a seriously wounded knight. The blade was thin enough to strike through the gaps between armour plates.
I never realized how much that beginning bit where she's travelling through all the fog seriously sounds allegorical for being on that other plane if you will. It's almost telling two stories at once, the spoken and the implied. Awesome writing and excellent reading!
Referencing the art piece where Arya is sporting a wolf skin: In Navajo culture, a skinwalker is a harmful witch that has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal. They will wear the skins and bones of the animal they turn into. The animal may be in material form or in spirit form and may cause illness, evoke terror, or bring death.
Finally catching up and honestly this TWOW Mercy chapter saddens me because not only has she witnessed her father's death, fished her 3 days dead mother from the river, likely knows about Robb's death and Winterfell's (where Bran and Rickon had stayed) fall - afterall she lives in a port city, she passed for a blind girl and a clam seller there... And now, she may have indirect "news" about Sansa through a satirical play in which she has her role (her few lines being "no I'm still a virgin hint at the wedding night for Sansa and Tyrion imo)... This is horrible. Horrible. So bad it's noted at the start of the chapter she forgets the wolf dreams, and it makes me wonder to what extent the trauma of fishing Cat out hits her, because in comparison Bran remembers his wolf dreams.
I think the chances that Arya will kill her mother are pretty high, given that Catelyn/Stoneheart is a death that was 'stolen' from the Many-Faced God.
The breaking of the rules is part of her training. At least the part that Arya is remembering who she is. Only those who can put on a face and remember who he is are strong enough to be a faceless man.
@@DavidLightbringer I think the slave the first guy faceless men killed was undead. Like the slaves in the mines of valyria were undead people. They couldn't kill themselfes, so the first faceless man brought him the gift of dead.
I never thought of that but yeah, if you've got these people who are suppose to change faces to infiltrate and asassinate, but they aren't strong enough to not get lost in a new and potentially better identify (a somewhat fresh start so to speak), they'd be useless as a faceless man
I feel like Night's Watch desertion is a same level of universal crime that has like magical consequences as kinslaying and violating guest right and the faceless men recognize it as such and that's why they "promote" Arya for killing Dareon
Had to have another rewatch of Rheagar and your amazing read of…Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. My personal favourite chapter in the whole series and it’s from a book that hasn’t been released! GRRM is taking his time because these sample chapters are just the bread before the appetizer.
Notice how at the end of the chapter is says “said Arya” not “said Mercy”. this makes me think that there was a voice change from mercy to arya and that’s why raff had his moment of recognition at the end
Was Raph the Sweetling a Bloody Mummer? I remember him being one of the Mountain's men. They all were at Harrenhal at some point in time. Mercy turned him into a bloody mummer after teaching him his lines
No one called her Arya except in dreams. That means that Bran tries to talk to her, I think! She could just be dreaming about her mother talking to her. It is not like her mother survived death and hanging out in a weirwood cave, that would be absurd. It could be her father. It is not like Bran and Rickon dreamt the same thing about him after his head was shopped off. I mean she could just be dreaming like normal people. Not dreaming about being a gigantic wolf eating human flesh, or of being a little girl being abused by her father. It happens. People dream of other things. Did you say Other things? Never mind!
Very late to the party here, have been trying to avoid TWoW chapters but I fell asleep infront of the t.v, autoplay did it's thing and I woke up in the middle of The Forsaken. I’m never organised enough to catch one of these bad boys live yet but hi from Northern Ireland! I love your videos, you keep this series alive for us while we wait for Winds, thank you 👏🏻
Do The Faceless Men know about Arya's warging ability? They seem to use and have knowledge of magic. They also keep a Weirwood door that I don't think is just for the aesthetic. They present Arya with tasks that make it obvious that something is different about her. Manipulation is a major part of the Faceless Mens way of life I would find it hard to believe they don't have some sort of idea of what she is. So it was just a coincidence that Arya had a Faceless Man show up in her life, save her and set her on a path to the Faceless Men?
In the chat Karl noted Arya's androgeny, while she was getting ready she equipped a knife and a coin sack: like a little pseudo-peen and...well, a sack 😅.
hmmm... I wonder if anyone else wanted revenge for the death of Serio Forel. I mean, he is a former First Sword and he may still have relatives and friends in the whos who of Braavos
There’s an interesting note here. The femoral artery is not hard to find if you have a basic understanding of anatomy. But to slice a femoral artery through breeches with minimal pain to the nerves is flipping difficult. At this point in the story, she must have skinned and examined (basically autopsied) 100+ men, in particular, and possesses knowledge akin to some modern surgeons. Again, instead of giving us a five year gap George has inserted clues that Arya has been rooting around inside cadavers via her faceless man “post-mortem skincare training” for… months? Up to six, realistically? But then again, she’s spent some time as Mercy…. Also, may this offering appease the Gods of “Algar”-ithms.
2 things first I always felt tool composed music where others were just making it. Second I really want Arya to pull a flaming sword from gendrys forge and plunge it in Catlyns hart making light bringer
Seeing Rhaegar come walking into the camera shot literally made me laugh out loud. My girlfriend heard me and when I tried to explain it to her, the look she gave me made me laugh even harder. I'm pretty sure I just broke a blood vessel in my eye, but it was suuuper worth it! Praise Garth!
I love all the double lies that arya tells in the chapter. Ex “i know your tongue alittle”, Mercy lied. Double lie because mercy knows 0 westerosi and arya knows it more than alittle.
I reckon once the Faceless men saw Arya wasn't ever going to abandon her true self but also saw her skinchanging power, plus potentially having some knowledge of the wolf pack, and understood the sheer rage and darkness within her, I think that they want her to bring about death on a mass scale. It's clear they view death as a balancing act. Arya stole three deaths from the Many Faced God, thus Jaquen required her to name three more to die. So since they are definitely aware of the Others, and that tens of thousands of deaths are being stolen, and even worse perverted through undeath and slavery (given the consciousness of the person is indicated to still be in there). A great many deaths are owed to balance the scales. So if they can't make Arya truly No One, then their only other use for her is to encourage all her worst impulses, increase her lethal and magical capabilities, then set her loose, hoping she'll bring death on a mass scale. The Ghost of High Heart hinted she's going to do something drastic, and assuming King's Landing does eventually go boom, then maybe Arya plays a role since The Ghost immediately seemed to compare Arya's future to Summerhall.
If these sample chapters are anything to go by, I would not be surprised at all if GRRM was having trouble writing a great many chapters from TWoW solely because of the horror and tragedy of the scenes involved.

Thank the Seven he was able to get out of the crypts for a little bit 😂 Despite all the...scenes...Mercy goes through in this chapter it's one of my favourites.
I like to believe she will get out of this darkness by reuniting with her family. Maybe her assassination/revenge spree will end when she will see what it did to her mum. I would love a reunion of some sort between undead Cat and Arya maybe in a wolf dream or something.
“Lady Stork/Lady Crane” that was a clever way of implying the same, yet different, story is being told. This being said, the show fell flat in every way for the last 4.5 seasons.
