This is a great sounding thing isn’t it?! Just this weekend we tested it on how it sounds, how easy it is to operate, but it’s also very well built! I quite like that thing.. I run the Tascam MD-301II here now. It’s basically a predecessor, without the CD player. Cracking player, but this one...
Ooooo more Minidisc! That deck looks like it's not going to take crap from anyone and has the scars to prove it. It's also nice to see that the keyboard makes typing in the titles much faster... and way more accurate, Cciense Dream is one of my favourites 😜 Another great video, thanks Maddi 😊
I agree with you on the keyboard port, My Sony MDS-JE640 has one and it's a real sanity-saver when naming tracks, Using a multi-jog dial is a real pain
also in some pro video/audio equipment from the 90s, specially rackable modules like these, the keyboart input port was used to send commands/update firmware and reset/set factory defaults by service technicians
Love minidisc! I still have my NetMD player which was the one that allowed you to record tracks onto it via USB! Its a shame MP3 killed minidisc off for portable listening.
I like the idea of having a keyboard. I bought an MD deck a couple of years ago so I could use my old discs again but the nostalgia of using the jog wheel to key in titles wore off pretty quickly when doing a whole disc...
I've just recently got back into MDs and what you said is so true, like spending almost 2 hours labelling a 30 track mix was one of the most tedious things I've ever done! However there is a PS/2 connection on the front so that's my next purchase, a PS/2 keyboard!
I have a Tascam DA-302 DAT unit. Way better options over any Sony home unit. When it comes to this kinda stuff I would now search out Tascam. Only thing is the high end Sony units do look nicer from a purely cosmetic point of view. That keyboard option is worth it by its self IMO. I think I can honestly say I've never changed the speed/pitch on any equipment that gave me that option. Although I don't make any of my own music. Thanks for the video.
Love seeing minidisc stuff. I use a netmd portable for titling via pc. So much faster than doing it the old way! I can't believe I put up with how slow the normal text input is before!
I think it's probably sad that I recognise all of these mods and have them. Nice video! You seem to really love discovering features on equipment. Would love to see you get into Ham Radio one day and review, compare and explain features of radios. Keep going! Love your videos.
Now that’s a really nice looking unit. I’d have loved one. I’m afraid I was a bit dismissive of MD when it first came out. I learned how good and versatile the format was later and ended up with the MD.net 1gig Sony. Such a great portable unit that was easy to use.
The key part is just like on the tone known as Master Tempo on the cjd's used in clubs today. When turned on Its locks the track in its original key. So you can still alter the pitch faster or slower and the sound doest pitch with it. Thanks for the video =)
as regularly used by DJs who don't even mix in key but still have it switched on anyway. I can usually hear the effect it has on the audio - it's not perfect and often sounds like the audio is skipping, drives me mad
Very nice... That dual pitch control is awesome and not found on any other deck that I know of and believe me I've had a few. Your timing for doing another Mini Disc review couldn't be better with the announcement of iTunes being phased out or rebranded. Who knows maybe these things can make a come back.
Maddi, Love that Tascam! I just looked one up on eBay and, you're right, they're expensive! I'm so glad you found a deal for yourself. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with this machine. You might think about sanding and painting the top of the cabinet. Maybe with satin paint? It'll then look as good as it sounds. :-)
The Amiga had so much great music. I love that piece that starts playing at 21:20. Whenever I'm listening to the stream on Kohina.com, I love when that piece comes up in the play list ("Into The Wonderful" comes up in the stream occasionally, too). When you were switching between CD and MD, I honestly couldn't hear any difference, and that's with earphones on. The MD has some excellent quality to its sound.
Congrats on a great find. That's a wonderful machine. I'll bet with the pitch/key, seperate outputs and selectable phone output, you could probably do some DJ blending on it if you wanted. Is it possible to play both CD and MD simultaneously, and can you record the CD with altered pitch to MD?
MML - Great video...again. Every MD desk should have a keyboard input! Most of mine are un-named as it's a PITA trying to name tracks using the jog shuttle. BTW, have you got a new power supply there for the Amiga? If so.....where can you get them from? Thanks
Yes you're right there is supposed to be, unfortunately the remote did not come included with this one, which is a shame I could do with one, i'm thinking of getting a substitute.
Interesting video, congrats. I decided to buy one, from a audio studio shop in Germany, obviously used, revised, but it worked at the beginning, and after a month break, I turned it on, but now the CD part doesn't go further than TOC Reading. And that's it. CD doesn't run neither shows time, track info. MD deck is fine, runs and sounds without any problem . Maybe You could help me out what happens. Does anybody know?
@@MsMadLemon OMG You did too, i'm not sure how I missed that! You know how certain songs can bring back a memory, well this one does for me. What an awesome piece of equipment, i'm so jealous :) Another amazing video Maddi, love how you manage to entertain, educate and make us feel like we're part of the experience.
If capacitors are worn, they are worn and should be replaced. However, there is no need to recap Commodores just for the heck of it, capacitor problems remain rare (except for the 1200 lines) and I see no need to change this position. Modern capacitors are often worse than the originals.
haha.. well firstly I never script, kinda do my videos "off the cuff" :o) ... And the RS232 port is just an I/O used to control the deck with a PC which to be honest i'm not that big on getting into :o)
@@MsMadLemon The Amiga serial port is an RS232 port. You only need a 25 to 9 pin adapter (edit) and a null modem (/edit); something that is extremely easy to solder yourself, and if you can find a manual of this player, you might very well be able to send commands from the CLI of your Amiga to the player. Something like echo 0x000A > SER: for for instance pausing the cd player (maybe I'm mixing up Linux now but you get the idea). Might be a lot of fun :)
@@Ezyasnos I won't lie, the thought already did cross my mind about connecting it to an Amiga's serial port lol.. i'll think about it, but i'm not going to promise anything :o))
@@MsMadLemon Oh I was only hoping. But even if, I think the most tricky part is getting an actual manual of this. You might want to try to telnet to it, that might very well work as that is very much standard. That would be something really unique to the Amiga, controlling this device using telnet and playing mod tunes on your mod tracker at the same time. That is something you couldn't do on other computers back in the day :)
Ah I remember that first Amiga mod played on Soundtracker, I remember using a MOD ripper program to rip it out of the Legend cracktro for 'oh no more lemmings'!!

That’s really cool hardware! I really like keyboard port on that thing.
I love MiniDiscs!
I'm guessing it came from a recording rack...most of my old kit has the same scratches from rack-mounting them (including my macintosh MC2500 :( )
Can anyone tell me if the mains voltage input can be set for different regions? Thanks for the review, great video
I don't remember the output to be low on the A500. Maybe the audio output needs recapping :) Just a thought..
Really? I always remembered it being low on all Amigas? i've recapped it already now so i'll test again :o)
@@MsMadLemon Ok, cool! honestly it is too long ago, I may be wrong, mixing up memory of my A1200 after the A500.. :)

Nice demo! I was always curious how exactly the keyboard would work for these. Also surprised about how good the Amiga music sounded.
interesting unit. very enjoyable to watch. I think you can turn off serial copy management on that thing.
That's amazing! :)
I'd have to get rid of those daft rack mount brackets. :)
They're always the first things to go :o)

When you bought it from a commercial seller in Germany there is a warranty on it.

Does anyone know the name of the mod that Maddi plays at 19m36s? I haven't heard this for years, really want to find it!

Hey Ms Mad Lemon. What is the asking price for a Tascam MD-CD1 in US currency? :) Thank you! :)

what about the serial connection??
