Why I bought the SIGMA 28-45 f/1.8 DG DN Lens (Sony E-mount) - First Impressions

- I discuss why I bought the Sigma 28-45 f/1.8 DG DN Lens for Sony E-mount and I compare it vs the Sony 24-70 GMII and the Sony 24-50G lens. I disuss the differences between 24mm vs 28mm, f/1.8 vs f/2.8, and I discuss going into APSC crop mode on the Sigma 28-45 to get close to 70mm range. I also discuss why APSC Crop of 45mm to 67.5mm at f/1.8 will yield a very similar overall look as 70mm f/2.8 full frame.

I will follow this man!
Im buying this because im new to sony and only have 1 lens which is the 20mm. Having that zoom range is cheaper than buying 3 prime lenses and ive seen the reviews that showed them sharper than some of the primes to boot! There are also many situations that your framing only needs a little zoom adjustment to nail that perfect shot which makes the zoom range a feature! I wont use it outside for family purpose tho!
Lol. Def not a family lens. Only family this lens will take you is the family chiropractic
You need the 28-45mm sigma lens and 70-200mm 2.8 sony lens... eep you want to be profesyonal!
Bro those 2 lens is heavier than my asian weight!
Let... me show you... just bring a chiropractor along with the 2 lens problem solved!
28-70 DG DN is a family lens.
In my experience there is more bokeh difference from f2.8 to f1.8 than from f4 to f2.8. Sometimes f4 shot can be misinterpret as f2.8 shot. but when you use an f1.8 lens, it is very distinctly that the background is bluer than f2.8.
F4 is trash tho
Vu is not your typical youtuber, that's why I appreciate his reviews. I had no interest in this lens until I saw his perspective, now I think differently about it
🤝
You got a new BBL Big Black Lens
You convinced me! I'm definitely picking it up! I pre-ordered & bought the 18-35mm 1.8 in 2010 when it first came out and was still rocking it until it my camera bag & gear was stolen from my car last year! I'm looking forward to the 28-45mm f 1.8!
💯🤝
No! BBC stands for Big Bold Cinematic. I bought your masterclass for only $29.99!
Does the masterclass come with the Canon Color Science???
@@marinrealestatephotography Yes it came with a Canon Color Science LUT to apply to my camera complete with blown out highlights. I love it!
External Zoom = Dusty Nutz. (sigma 28-70 f2.8 is the perfect example)
You can say if it's 28mm if you take a quick photo and check the focal length in play mode :D
Ain't no one got time for that
@@nVuFilms takes 5 seconds :P
@@JoATTech ain't no one got time for that
Let me show you tha bokeh dbag deez nutz sigma bbc lens- thanks for the honest and practical discussion. Imo, your videos are the best for the professionals. When I eventually pick up this lens, I'll be sure to get it from Bich & Ho Pho, Nail, and Massage.
Lol
can you tell us a behind the scenes how ddid you get this look with the 24mm and zve1 did you use a mist, or light or nd filter or diffusion, it looks incredible, so beautiful :D
did you stop down the lens
nvm u said f1.4 wide open but both your eyes are in focus this Is awesome
B&H joke never gets old :D
I hate to reuse jokes but I have to since not everyone has seen the previous ones yet
Thanks for the interesting comparison!
Can you compare this with Tamron 20-40? That lens is so useful but I guess it's not super exciting
F*ing reasonable review bro! dammmn! thanks tc
@@PaulAntoun 👍
Do you see yourself using the 24mm Gm any less? Is 24mm useful handheld with dynamic stabe... Isn't it too tight?
24 if the way
The thing is that at F1.8 you are already blurred (your shoulders). So separation actually is more pronounced at F2.8.
I've done ton of experiments between different focal lengths and different F-stops, and for talking head (portrait) F2.8 seems the best for background separation.
Sure bokeh is more pronounced at F1.8, but separation looks better at F2.8, because the talent is fully in focus so it's cut out better from the blurry background.
Of course for medium, american or full body shot that's a different story. F1.4 is then better, but only if lens is sharp wide open. Sometimes it's better to close the aperture a bit to get better background separation if lens is not very sharp wide open ....
I'd argue f1.8 looks better because the bokeh is much smoother
@@nVuFilms Depends then on definition of the separation. I've tend to use every lens wide open, but after experimenting I'm usually using F2.8 for headshots (photo and video).
Of course if the background is 1 meter behind the subject faster aperture will help, but if is 2 or more meters F2.8 is enough.
Unless there is enough light :D.
What are the implications of clear image zoom on extending the 45 in FF on the FX3/6 vs going to APS-C. Also, what I like about this lens is that it becomes a workhorse on the fx30 in low light as well -- would you agree?
Clear image zoom isn't an exact pixel readout like using an actual crop mode.
If you ciz on fx3 you aren't getting a 4k image anymore. You're getting less than 4k upscalled to 4k.
Cropping/ciz isn't an argument in favour of this lens, as a 24-70, would the also be a "24-105" by the same principle
@@cbflazaro I think depending on the person and what cameras they have available to them.
For example I have both an FX3 and fx30. If I was in a situation where I need tighter focal length, I can just switch to my FX30. (Regardless of what other lens and be APSC cropped to whatever).
Keep in mine this lens is f/1.8 and APSC cropped will give it a look of a 2.7. whereas when you crop f/2.8 native you are getting an f/4.5 look.
The argument that you can APSC crop the 28-45 is very viable because it is 1.8 and you can get an identical look of a 70mm f/2.8 with it.
Great video as always. Did you ever talk about why you sold the 35-150 I was considering it!
150 wasn't long enough for some things and carrying around all that weight using 50-75 at basically f/2.8 made me leave it at home for something smaller
@@nVuFilms my friend had a similar experience, He found he was using it at 35 most of time and bought the 35 GM
it's not clear from the video, what exactly does DN stand for?? 😆
I dunno
It's all well and good, I just didn't catch what 'DN' stands for. 🥜
🥜🥜
I am so cheap, I think I would just "split the difference" and get a 35mm f/1.8 lens and call it a day.
That is a good thought too. Then I realized 28mm is just wide enough to do an establishing shot of the wedding venue where 35mm I would have to do multiple shots and create a sequence of establishing shots. 35mm is also not wide enough for me to get a full body of a bride dress in a small room. 28mm would get me there in most situations.
Although 35 and 45 seem close, 45 looks more of a regular focal length where 35 is def wide
@@nVuFilms Ahhh... good to know. Thanks.
love my 24mm f1.4
I'd say zero difference between 45mm in APS-C mode @F1.8 and 70mm in FF mode @F2.8 :o
Yea so my math is correct
LMFAOOOOOO
This lens has a problem to me. It's too big and heavy for what it is.
The tamrom is 35-150, it's f2(1/3 stop difference which is nothing) at 35mm it's f2.2 almost up to 80mm and 2.8 all the way to 150mm. And weights like 10%more than this.
This lens is great, but it should either had been smaller, or longer reach than 45. At this size I expected at least variable aperture 28-60 F1.8-2.5
I think we all have wishes a lens should be something. Reality is, if it was possible without being gigantic and expensive they probably would have tried.
IMO at $1350 and having 1.8, even at a limited range of 28-45 is great.
Or 28-50 f/2 at a smaller size.
@@nVuFilms Sigma 24-35 f/2 can be had for under $500. I bought mine used for $400 two years ago because a short zoom is never popular.
the only lens review you watch in incognito mode
Lol
Loving the change in where you’re filming. All of that natural lighting in the house and the ambience of your kids 😂
👍
Did you store your footages on your SSDeeznutz?
Something like that
Do I have do a shot everytime you explain what DN stands for?
Yes
@@nVuFilms Great review. Killer post review short. 👍🏻
Wheres the “another idiotic video” slogan?
I've been wanting to sell my 35 GM for a while now because it just doesn't get used much at all anymore -- the Tamron 35-150 pretty much scratches that 35mm prime itch at f/2, and the added zoom at f/2.8 is amazing for event coverage. This lens has me very intrigued, but I'm still not totally sure how much sense it would make in my workflow and with how I shoot. I pretty much shoot weddings with 3 lenses: the Tamron, the 24-70 GM2, and the 24 GM. I don't have any gaping holes in my kit but I also know there are times I'd love having that f/1.8 for the dance floor, but then I worry 24mm vs 28mm isn't wide enough. Tough decisions! Might just have to rent one and try it to know for sure. I think that realistically, I'll probably end up selling the 35GM and the 24-70 f/2.8 in favor of the 24-70 f/2 GM that's been rumored for a while.
Yea we will see
One of the most informative videos I've ever seen. Thank you for this!

I love your windows and the view of greenery. Beautiful
Thanks
HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA ... this video clip was on the background and everytime I heard DN stands for Deez nuts ... dude !!!! YOU MADE MY DAY !!!
@6:14 I dont see any bokeh loss. It just loos like you zoomed in. There are no changes other than compression and real estate IMO.
When they say your kids grow up in a blur, I didn’t realise it was because they were running around while you were filming at f1.8.
All I wanted to see the closer it got to the end of the video was that instagram short review. I was not disappointed 😂😭💀
Is there a BAC? 😂
Doubt it
@@nVuFilms 😂
Finally! I was waiting for your review of this magical piece of art. I DO NOT UNDERTASTAND why all the other duchebagz tubers and almost all of their public do not understand this lens! It is the most amazing lens ever made for wedding photographers/videographers. It is my favourite 35 mm 1.4 lens on steroids! I do not need and want 24 mm. I do not want to go to the ultra wide section! I am vomiting in my mouth when somebody say "ooh this is not wide enough...." If you need it to be wider go for a different product! Good job vid the video!
Because for versatility it doesn't even come close to Canon RF 28-70 f/2 L, and for the money Tamron 35-150 is much better value.
I disagree with the Tamron statement. Tamron is $300 more. Canon is 3lbs and $3,000
@@nVuFilms Gotta consider both the price advantage and technical disadvantage of an older product. The street price difference is a lot smaller.
@@nVuFilms Haven't even mentioned primes yet, for which this lens is supposed to be the replacement. In reality, most people much rather shoot with 35+85 or 24+50, either f/1.8 combo of which might still cost and weigh less, while being more flexible than this short zoom lens.
Very useful content! I am firm sure now what I do not need faster than 2.8! Such a relief. But somehow I still want those small cute all metal Sigma f2 (I) primes :)
interesting that you could buy the 28-45 and 70-200 by Sigma for about the cost of the 70-200 GM II....will you be using the 28-45 on your gimbal? I'd be curious to hear how that goes...
Pretty gross
Thank u. Your story telling is great. I think this lens is for someone who has been debating buying a sony 35mmf1.8 vs a sony 35mmf1.4. i think this lens is it. Now, i am assuming that this lens doesn't have the dumb vignetting the sony 35's suffer from and the dumb breathing the Gangster Mochi has.
Photographer should know that this lens is for video only. Can do some zooming while focusing. A cinematic one and for f 1.8, lower low light.
Great lens and great review.
🤝
Are you going to buy rumored 24-70 F2 from Sony too? :D
Please do ... I want the comparison :P
I would.
So did you like it ? and what does DN mean?
Man... that using crop mode to get 70mm 2.8 was mindblowing and comparing them to show the fact is exactly why i respect this channel. Ive watched so many reviewer say you lose that 70mm range completely.
🤝
@@nVuFilms 24-50mm for fam, 20mm 1.8 for talking head, 28-45mm to get other primes and tamron 70mm-180mm is the plan! 24mm i can wait for gm2 version
Cropping is cropping.. Not a focal length or aperture change.
@@cbflazaro look at his example its roughly the same except it becomes the 2.8 equivalent. Cropping photo is different from cropping video.
Do you lose resolution if you do that? No right? Since it's super sampled
Does anybody know what DN means? 🤔
😂😂😂😂😂
So, i got the len on Thurs, tried out this len on the wedding day yesterday. It was amazing, up to the point, the len kept loosing it AF ability. It happened on my Sony A7S3, icon show MF, aperture show "--". I did check the AF/MF toggle, the AF ring on the len... During the issue, i could not even manually focus the len.
The only way to fix it was unmount the len and re-mount again. On / off camera , take off battery wont help. And this issue happened like every 15 mins... so frustrated.
Any my A7S3 worked well the rest of other len, 24.70 GMii, 50 GM1.2 , Sigma 85, 70-200 GMii etc...
Did this issue ever occur with you? Do you think i got the lemon... ?
@@LongNMedia did not occur
@@nVuFilms Thanks for confirming this. I assume i got a lemon... i will reach out to the store for an exchange...
@@LongNMedia 👍. Mine is going strong.
🤣 THESE NUTS!
Do you see yourself using the 24mm Gm any less? Is 24mm useful handheld with dynamic stabe... Isn't it too tight? Trying to talk myself out of 24mm...should I get 20 instead and use it with dynamic stabe?
Endings are always the best 😂
You can just use full frame mode and just use clearview zoom to zoom in in 4k.
Clear image zoom is a bit of a mystery interms of how the camera interprets data from the sensor. So I try not to use it most of the time because I'm unsure of how it works. If it is pixel binning or something, it may ruin the image
