This is absolute gold. The sheer volume of traffic on a summer Saturday was quite something, additional trains in all directions. Surprising amount of NSE stock as well.

Great stuff! Pure nostalgia, especially as I was 'on the broadcast' at BNS 83-89! I think that's me, right at the end. It's a pity the 40s had gone by the time this was filmed, as a rare appearance of one was always welcome amongst the Sulzer-fest, and the 50s were a hideous excuse of an EE design, imho!

The two 85's on the sleeper was an excellent capture, and one that brought back lots of great memories.....fabulous stuff.....

Incidentally, can you recall a sleeper train that ran for only a short time between the south coast and Scotland via Reading, Oxford, Coventry and New Street?

The Sussex Scot, from Brighton ?
Was that not a day service ?
There was a Bristol to Scotland sleeper that did run via Brum New Street.

Some classic traction especially the 85's on the sleeper listen to that roar, was that the Stranraer Euston sleeper {1M14) as i recall there was so many sleeper services as in 1M10,1M11,1M14,1M15,1M16 and 1V32 which went to Bristol or Plymouth depending on the season and all from Scotland but on only one of the Euston's went via New Street as i done that myself but cant remember which one without digging out my old moves books. Thanks for sharing it really brings back great memories.

It was indeed the Stranraer to Euston sleeper, but I seem to remember that on this occasion it was combined with the Royal Highlander from Inverness which did not normally pass through New St. I could be wrong of course!

    • @vicsams4431
      @vicsams4431 4 місяці тому

I have done the Stranraer Harbour Boat Train (21.15 Euston to Stranraer). I can confirm it normally ran via the WCML (Trent Valley) and it ran ahead of the Royal Highlander (21.30 Euston to Inverness).
On my night in question, back in 1984, we had 86 102 to Carlisle, 47 414 to just south of Ayr, where they attached a pilot engine. This normally was a Class 27 to work a freight back north, and they attached it to the sleeper to allow the Signalbox to close early (they were two shift boxes, not three). On my night, the pilot loco was 20 039. It came off at the Home Signal, and went into a Centre Road at Stranraer. 47 414 then hauled into Platform 1. The first up passenger was the 07.30 to Glasgow Central with 47 434 with Sealink liveried Mark 1s off Platform 2 at Stranraer !

Excellent stuff. 25th June 1988 31415+31469 did 1V47, 10:10 Manchester - Paignton. Had there and back again, went out via Camp Hill, IIRC? Think I'm one of those with my head out as they depart!

Fantastic collection Roy, many thanks, I have subscribed. This really is one of the most comprehensive and well filmed private collections of this era, which is an era I remember very fondly as these are some of my earliest memories. I have many questions, but one thing I wanted to ask as I am modelling (at the other end) - were any of the Class 50s running to Paddington directly via Wycombe and the old NNML? Or are they Paddington via Oxford, or XC services? I see other people have noted the sheer amount of NSE stock, but it turned up everywhere! I was looking at some photos of Crewe around this time and there was plenty of the red, white and blue around! Brilliant stuff and thanks again. Adam C (Weymouth)

Yes, I did 9 hours overnight on Brum New Street for an early Sunday morning start for 45 012 working a Pathfinders Tour. I was on 45 107 to Southport the day before which caught fire at Edale. Everyone baled at Sheffield for the last Up HST and bed in London. But not moi. I baled at Rugby and took a train here. No coat. No money (for I was not planning to do an overnight). But 45 012 was required !

The 2nd time you captured it leaving and I waved it off on the platform. You can see me in the distance before walking off with my bag. What was the Manchester Pullman stock being used on? It's seen in one of the other videos as well. Was that on a service train or a charter?

    • @theroybowdencollection9807

The stock was hired by National Express to take passengers from Euston to Carlisle where they'd transfer to their coaches for the Scottish road tours. The train ran on summer Saturdays that year :)

47097 on Mk 3 stock on a Paignton, was that, train? Saltley must have been short of power.
While there was an ETH loco on the train of Mk 1 stock that followed it. Surely someone could have swapped them round

At that time it seemed that Saltley would send out whatever was available, often Railfreight locos which would otherwise have been sat idle over the weekend. Logic have may not always have been applied!
