Tips on the frosting, you can put a small amount of laquer thinner on a cotton buds and apply it on the parts with frosting, it should remove the frosting, but make sure you dry it properly this time 💖 ps. if your kit is painted, be aware that the laquer thinner will strip the paint.
That frosting effect is the main reason I've been weary of trying to apply any type of clearcoat. I live in a hot, dusty and humid area, so the risk is very high.
It's not that these kits that are bad, I think it's your painting skill, the paints you're using, or the weather where you lived. i have painted most of the kits you had issue with and I don't have any issue especially painting those.
We evolve as builders as time goes on but will still make unforced mistakes, maybe that's why Bandai reprints kits for OCD veteran builders besides new builders 😎 That custom HG Zaku 3 looks amazing as I've recently snap built mine yesterday.
its good to consult what went bad but also acknowledge what went well. I have not yet delved properly into painting and scribing, but I want to have a better set up first. my first painting was the shoulder armour of the HGIBO barbatos lupus and some yellow and greys on a moon gundam, but thats about it for painting. I also tried to seam removal on a HGUC hazel 2 and entry grade rx78. Defo showed me where I can improve, but not exactly how to, so thanks for the tips!
Its funny that you think some of these look really bad, I actually thought they look pretty good. I guess we are our own worst critics at the end of the day
We all have those skill checks we look back on and regret. I clear coated my PGU and did a shit job since I didn't paint at the time. I'm considering stripping everything and painting it but I'd have to find those jewel stickers somewhere. Getting rid of that frosty clear coat can be done with a balancer from what I've found. Well... Mostly...
I've "frosted" a few kits back in the day. Not enough solvent was getting mixed in with the topcoat base, an easy mistake to make when getting started.
This video got me wanting to build a Zaku III! These aren’t really that bad compared to some of my early builds. I remember breaking a couple of pegs before even finishing some kits haha
I'm more into doing straight build, but tried panel lining 1 time with an MG and I was hooked, bought some gears for my next build, I just want it to be matte with panel lines, don't want decals, buy your builds are great, you will improve with your next build, I will keep to mind all your self comments for my improvements in the future.
I'd be switching clears.... Never had a issue with the Army Painter Anti-Shine Matte Varnish spray. Doesnt really due the metallic colors too bad, a small touch up on some colors tho is needed. Mainly lighter golds, brass's, high silvers. But either way... this look rather good. Just use some weather pastels.
Ahh, this makes sense now! I can totally see what you mean on the Sazabi now! Hrm, so what topcoat do you finish your models with these days if you’ve veered away from the Krylon spray in more recent builds?
The RG Zeta is my worst experience and I have several zeta model kits. I lost a piece to the leg so it won’t connect and the way you connect the backpack was horrible and constantly popped out 😂.
Thank you so much! I worked real hard on that, one of my first lacquer airbrushed kits. The torso body and frame pieces where flat top coated and the armor pieces where coated with quick shine floor finish. just brushed the finish onto the parts evenly and let it level out and dry. super easy application. People used to use Pledge floor finish before it was discontinued, I heard it was perfect thickness to spray from an airbrush too, Quick shine is a little too thin for that, but maybe I just need to adjust my air settings.
wow.. honestly i really looked at that kits like perfection. its really beautiful. but for you, its worst? man. you must have a really high standard.. and yeah we all have different preferences, but man..
I've top coated 4 of my gundam with Mr.Hobby Matte which was easy because they were white and tbh i am so scared to top coat my Sazabi Ver Ka for the reason it might frost :(
Applying another layer of topcoat can help because it may reactivate the existing layer, potentially releasing trapped water molecules causing the frosting. Alternatively, you can use a hairdryer on a high-temperature setting to address the issue.
I've had success before by doing a few gloss coats to bring it back close to it's out of the box finish. it really all depends on the type of clear used, certain clear coats can be removed by soaking the parts in alcohol but if you have any custom paint work this will also take the paint up as well so you have to be really careful. New England basements do not do a good job with humidity control at all lol.
it really is luck of the draw, I've fixed frosted coats before by spraying gloss to bring the finish back to what it looked like out of the box then rematting it but some of these kits like the destiny would be hard to do that as it's really frosted. Moderate frosting can be fixed with the gloss method. there is the potential to try a second coat to reactivate the frosted coat and get it to re level itself out and take out the frost but that hasn't worked for me personally.
i got both the gloss and matte finish for the krylon, ill tell you how my builds came out. probably under this comment and i might link a reddit or discord.
you can have some good luck with Krylon, I used 1311 on 50+ kits with no issues really. I don't do gloss coating often so id be curious to see the result.
Krylon 1311 actually has a great finish, nice and flat and evens out nicely. I didn't have any issues with Krylon until it had a reaction with the the metallic decals. In fact the Full Saber Qan in the video was Krylon 1311.
Going forward I'll matte clear the model without any clear pieces installed if it's an easy enough disassembly. like the front sensor on the Epyon is easy enough to pop out, clear, let it dry and put back on. If it's more complicated to remove I'll mask the part. I clear coat limb by limb now so all portions of the model should have a nice consistent finish.
I know it's not the point of the video, but RG amatsu mina breaks my heart. Such a bad kit for such a cool design, and it doesn't even have a MG, only an old, even worse 1/100 no grade.

I have a similar issue up here in New England. I don’t paint anything now without looking at my humidity gauge.
Zaku III got a nice RG feel tho. definitely vibing with it

Gratz on the 4k subs! You're growing quickly. Love to see it. Great video, as always

This is very true! I think cross comparison also pushes us into being overly critical of ourselves as well.
Keep us updated on the Akatsuki, I think a lot of people would want to see that
I just bought an Aile strike today and plan on making an AMSJ fix video. Running tests now and will even include the akatsuki if everything goes well
So sounds like the key takeaway is to never use Krylon clear coats??
Congrats on 4k subs

damn, idk why but I love the way the Z looks, it's some kind of battle damage version haha

The RG Destiny actually looks like if it was natural wear and tear.

honestly i’d love to see how you topcoat your kits, i’m still not the greatest even though i’ve built so many kits at this point 😭
I'll have a tutorial on that soon! Going to do a cross comparison between different brands of topcoats.
My issue with the amatsu mina is that by topcoating it you lose a lot of the contrast the gloss black and satin black pieces have
Ty for The Info. I Will put my Matsu Mina inside a Runner Bag. Can't believe it could get like that...
That’s just because I used a bad can of clear. If you wanted it glossy it looks fine out of the box. I just prefer the matte look on everything.
Ahh, this makes sense now! I can totally see what you mean on the Sazabi now! Hrm, so what topcoat do you finish your models with these days if you’ve veered away from the Krylon spray in more recent builds?

It's a hard kit for sure, very fragile with a high margin of error.
@ yea I’m thinking about doing a battle scarred zeta 😍.
Just do it better than mine lol
@ will do 😂.
your hyaku shiki looks perfect! may i ask if you used a gloss or semi-gloss topcoat. thanks!
Thank you so much! I worked real hard on that, one of my first lacquer airbrushed kits. 0:17 now we're comparing gunplas??!
Just comparing my old ugly builds and where I messed up on them. I wanted to show my junk before I showed builds I’m really happy with.
wow.. honestly i really looked at that kits like perfection. its really beautiful. but for you, its worst? man. you must have a really high standard.. and yeah we all have different preferences, but man..

i have an idea how about dissable the kits you wannt to retire and maybe make a kit bash out of them and them paint it ?
Is there a way to fix the frosting? It may seem contradictory, but when I reapply the top coat, it can diminish the unpleasant frosting effect.
Applying another layer of topcoat can help because it may reactivate the existing layer, potentially releasing trapped water molecules causing the frosting. Alternatively, you can use a hairdryer on a high-temperature setting to address the issue.

I bought a mr color gx 113 matt uv cut. Now im scared to top coat my gunpla😅
dont be scared practice on spoons first, that way you have experience using it. That's another little tip I learned form forums. Saves the models.
Mans popping them out , slow down 😭 I can't keep up
lol I was on vacation for 2 weeks. What was I supposed to do
Can frosted top coats, be fixed with top coating it again?
it really is luck of the draw, I've fixed frosted coats before by spraying gloss to bring the finish back to what it looked like out of the box then rematting it but some of these kits like the destiny would be hard to do that as it's really frosted. 1:43 Why would you use Krylon topcoat? That stuff is complete garbage.
I saw some and thought maybe I’ll try it out of curiosity 😂. Glad I got an airbrush kit.
It was a learning experience. Did you watch the video?
Krylon 1311 actually has a great finish, nice and flat and evens out nicely. I didn't have any issues with Krylon until it had a reaction with the the metallic decals. In fact the Full Saber Qan in the video was Krylon 1311.
how did you ensure that clear coatings don't frost over in your later builds?
Going forward I'll matte clear the model without any clear pieces installed if it's an easy enough disassembly. like the front sensor on the Epyon is easy enough to pop out, clear, let it dry and put back on. If it's more complicated to remove I'll mask the part. I clear coat limb by limb now so all portions of the model should have a nice consistent finish.

Dust off your kits, please!
Saying Sazabi and Epyon worst? Pffft a joke vdeo.....
Saying ugly why bot jist build your gunpla.
He's describing how he screwed up those models, he is not saying they're bad
Truthchan has the right idea, these are the builds I did the worst job on. Not saying the Sazabi or Epyon design themselves is bad.
