I cried during this scene. The music works so well for this scene.

The choice of the song by Ray Charles, for me, amplified that bitterness, for it was like a recollection gimmick of the "better days" in the past between Kenichi and Tima--a stark contrast with this scene and a gruesome reminder of the quality moments that were forever lost.

I can't help but feel sorry for Tima.
An innocent and kind little girl who(the word "which" did not appeal to me as much), in a way unfortunate yet unavoidable, was exposed to so much violence and such heartbreaking news about herself and reality. Her transformation into a terminator, was perhaps the most bitter part of the story (who would like to see a good person go bad!)

One of the best scenes in cinima history. I hear people say that the song is out of place in the scene but when you see the whole movie its hard to imagine them making this any more perfect.

I literally watch this scene on repeat sometimes just to set a metaphor for myself (Kenichi) losing my innocence (Tima) as my life (Metropolis) falls apart.

Rintaro's Metropolis has extremely well done visuals but I mainly come back for the music and how it works with the sequences. ...sniff.

I am crying all over again! Everytime I see this scene I cannot hold back the tears! Poor Tima and Ken-ichi!!!!!!!!! And the Ray Charles song just fits perfectly and makes the scene also beautiful, despite the major tragedy! Thanks for posting! This movie is definitly one the best anime movies of all time!

    You are most welcome.
In truth, there is a lot more to this movie than what I've said. The animators did a great job illustrating the story with storytelling techniques (e.g. pay attention to the "Angel Scene" as opposed to this one).
I've watched it nearly a month ago, and just yesterday, I found myself humming the song and remembered the story...my heart felt sore even then- it was That memorable

This scene is nothing short of a masterpiece in film-making.
I first saw this film as a kid with my older sister and father in an out-of-the-way indy theater in downtown Austin, and I'll never forget it.

  • @Pallyrulez

The rhetorical question, "Who am I", used here was fantastic! It really makes you think about how could one define an android like Tima-- if she were just like the other robots, then it'll be easy to define, but she's not, she's a perfect duplicate of a human being with human characteristics--how can she possibly be defined as a robot or as a human being?

This had to be my overall favorite part in the entire movie, my favorite song. It's a refreshing reprise from all those dramatic orchestras and such, because this...it just FIT. I couldn't believe I hadn't liked RC before this, and promptly went to look him up and download some music x3 Fantastic; I cry every time.

I find Tima and Kenichi's relationship unique. I had a theory that they were in love but everyone said they were just "friends" but it was more than just friendship, true love. Why'd you think Kenichi protected Tima so much? Because he LOVED her, not as a father, but as his love. The narrator on the Making of Metropolis even says "they fell in love with each other".

    I really like this movie!
It opens up to the issue of a possible scenario of how mass produced AI can widen the gap between the wealthy, who got richer by getting more efficient and zero pay workers, and the poor, who got superseded by robots and lose their jobs and value in society.

Did anyone know that there was a last frame in the original Japanese release of the movie? It was edited out of the European and US versions for reasons I can't understand. It shows a cafe or a shop that's run by Kenichi and Tima, explicitly showing that Tima survived and Kenichi helped put her together again. I saw the image years ago on an anime forum but I just l searched and searched and couldn't find it but it's out there somewhere.

In a way, it's so very sad that because of her unique condition and mechanism, she is the only "being" who cannot give herself an answer of who or what she is.
    "Who is She?"
Makes you double think about making super AI or complete human cloning.
