    As these colours are very strong single pigments and for that reason have different consistency i tend to always add a little white or black or both when using them. last few models i have painted i have used only Kimera and i love it. If starting with a Zenital i suggest to use a'lot of glaze medium to save your pre-shade.
    I also recommend these colours to complete beginners. Maybe i am crazy. But this small set of colours gives you all you ever need to get started. And in my opinion it forces any beginner painters to learn about painting and mixing paints straight away instead of learning about it later and being afraid.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 роки тому +2

      Yeah, it would be a great way to start because it would force you to understand color theory and mixing at an earlier stage than most do. That being said, I can also understand why some would want to stay away and get something more by the numbers, so both are valid, but it's valuable if you can withstand the shallow learning curve.

      It would be creat for any beginner to start with a limited palette, but i feel that this choice needs to be supported by a good master. Having a skilled painter nearby to help in any troubleshooting would make the limited palette choice viable for a beginner, otherwise it can lead to frustration and the newcomer leaving the hobby

    I used to be a paint fom the pot kinda guy, but a buddy of mine gave me a set of these cause he didn;t like mixing colors, and I haven't looked back. They are a pleasure to paint with and I love how matte they dry, which took a little getting used to.

    I had the chance to try these at Adepticon last year in a class with Francesco Farabi, and I'll admit it: when I realized I'd have to mix my own fleshtones I was terrified. However, it only took about 5 minutes of playing around with colors before I figured it out and then I immediately fell in love with these paints. As Vince says, they both wetblend and glaze like a dream, and because of the pigment density, the colors are amazingly vibrant--even when working on less saturated colors. (Francesco gave the breakdown in class, and I think it was something like Kimiera is 35% pigment, while most minipaints are in the 10% range.)
    One thing I don't believe Vince mentioned is that the set comes with a nice mixing guide to get you started understanding how to blend colors. If you're already comfortable mixing your own colors, or you just want to challenge yourself, it's worth picking these up.

    I'd be really interested in seeing a side-by-side comparison with Golden Fluid Acrylics (and High-Flow as well), Liquitex Acrylic Gouache, da Vinci Fluid Acrylics, ....
    I've been using the artists' colors for a year or so and have much the same reaction to them as you have to these. But they're easier to find. 8-)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 роки тому +9

      That's quite a comparison! I would have to get a fair number of paints, but I like the idea. Sort of an Artist Paint review (as opposed to the miniature paint review). I will have to mark that down as a good idea for a future video.

      Thanks for considering it, though. I don't think I know anybody using both artists' acrylics and Kimera paints, so the comparison might instructive.
      Actually, I don't know that you would need a bunch of colors, since pigments vary so much even within a brand. But a comparison of (say) Burnt Sienna and Phthalo Blue between brands could be interesting. That might highlight differences without being too confusing.
      And Burnt Sienna and Phthalo Blue (or whatever) are useful enough that having a few extra bottles might be reasonable.

      I bought the Liquitex Acrylic Gauche since Kimera Colors were out of my price range. MarcofrisoniNJM was trying them out in a video on color mixing, he had some comments but it was not a review video so I poked around the net some for more info. I found others speculating they were a good alternative that was easier to get - and went for it when I caught a sale. I like them so far. Overall very matte, opaque and concentrated pigment which is what I wanted. (I already had acrylic inks and a Wicked airbrush paint set, nearly all of the colors in those sets are at least semi-transparent.)

    Something else I will mention is that just like their HBA cousins, each paint color has different properties in terms of opacity. Oxides, Black, White all are pretty opaque. The Pthalo Blues and Green, while super tinting strong in color, are actually very translucent.
    I have been using mine for learning color mixing and theory, as well as using them like inks to push existing mixed paints in a certain direction.
    Glad you were able to try them out. Now that you have such a collection, having color comparisons between brands to compare opacity and finish next to each other could be interesting.

Since the pure pigment is, to my knowledge done, so you can mix it to what you need and know which pigments are in the paints.l

      Not convinced that would be very cost-effective for them. Also they handle a lot more consistently than most fluid acrylics, which tend to emphasise the unique qualities of each pigment. So at minimum Kimera is doing work with the underlying medium and additives. Also they’ve made one or two quirky choices with the pigments. I’m not sure many pro lines would go for the orange they’re using. Poor lightfastness.

    • @bettsdn
      @bettsdn 3 роки тому +7

      I will say that my wife is a studio artist and has a large collection of highflow and fuild artist acrylics. I own and use the Kimera set. They are more dissimilar to the high flows in my opinion and are most similar in consistency to Golden's fluid acrylics. However that line is all over the place with finish and does not brush on miniatures all that well - I've tried. The medium has got to be completely different. Also of note with artist acrylics is that most brands tend to use similar well-known pigments to achieve the same colors. That's part of the appeal. Cobalt Blue is always Cobalt Blue. It's the medium where companies differentiate themselves. I think Kimera has done a pretty cool thing here - taking artist-grade single pigment recipes and putting them into a medium that mini painters can use.

    I really like the idea of these paints and them being pigment rich makes them extra appealing. When army painting you could do some test models where you figure out the which colors to mix and then pre-mix them (and put in a empty dropper bottle). That way you can find the exact color you like, but also have the consistency of regular paints. Do you think that makes sense Vince?
    Also, has your evaluation changed after using them the past 5-6 months?

    Great video and even better timing as I keep hearing about them from other painters, but I've been on the fence. I will probably pick them up (once back in stock,) but contrary to what you said in the video because I've always been an out the pot color guy. I have learned that is actually a detriment to understanding color and light and holds you back when painting. By knowing what's in the mix it allows you to alter and see the effect. All because of some good OSL and lighting effect videos. Thanks Vince!

    Vince, would this be the paint set for me? I don't like to buy specific paints to highlight a color. I only like to buy paints to for a color I know will be used consistently like say the orange on my non aspect warrior units who will be in black armor, accented with orange with blue gems. But for my aspect squads wich I tend to collect alot of I paint them in all sorts of different colors schemes and having the option to mix potentially any color I need seems pretty awesome. I'm also highly creative (my MBTI is INFJ) I'm also like a 97 in openess to experience wich means out of 100 people I'm more creative than 96 of them wich basically means I think of all sorts of unique ideas and ways to do things and sometimes I feel like I'm working with limited tools with the paints I have. Having the option to potentially mix any color I need instead of spending 10$ on a specific paint seems like a godsend. You've been painting for longer than I've been alive so I want to hear your thoughts.

    I'm surprised at this review! I've had mine for months now and while I agree with everything you've mentioned in this review, I have come to hate these paints because they separate on me. If I mix a desaturated brown using the red oxide and a green, I get a lovely color that ends up as red and green on my palette about 2 minutes after it's mixed. Even more so if I made a glaze out of it. I'm probably doing something very different to you, I have primarily been using water as a medium for these and maybe I should use something else.
    For paints that require you to mix up every single color, having them separate on me was too much of a hassle to like them much, or at all. So I was surprised to not hear you mention this at all.

    • @BarringtonDailey
      @BarringtonDailey 4 роки тому +1

      I've not had this problem, could be the way the paint interacts with the type of water in your area. What I have had happen is for the pigment to clump up in the glaze. This was probably my fault for using too much water; but the reason I did this was that the paints were so saturated I feel I needed to thin them more. When I used the medium I did not have this problem at all. Try checking out Marco Frision NJM channel - he uses these a lot and gets spectacular results.

      Tim Dierckx Read your comment. Then watched the paints on Vince’s palette to see if they separated. End of the video and they seemed stable. Mate of mine uses this range too and he hasn’t mentioned separation issues. Perhaps it’s just down to the water you are using. Are you using tap water? Because that can have variable mineral contents and chemical additives. Try distilled water, or the medium supplied with the paints. Good luck.

    I recently got my set in the mail. Was very stoked until I realized that these paints don't airbrush well (at least not the 3 yellows I tried). That is a bummer, because I have been focusing on getting better with the airbrush. It's my own fault, I should have researched it better before buying. I do like supporting a small company like Kimera and very much appreciate the artist approach where they only use single pigments and tell you which ones the use (would be awesome if Vallejo/Scale75/ProAcryl would start doing that, but I think it's more likely that hell freezes over first). I got the cold yellow and violet after finally deciding to try them, loving the cold yellow, but I'm confused about the violet, it's rather thick almost like toothpaste and adheres pretty roughly if thinned down even a little bit.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 роки тому +1

      Many Kimera have that more toothpaste feel. They are generally thicker. The key is working them out into a layer consistency if you want to paint in that style, or, keeping the paint thick and “thinning on the miniature” where you put on a glop of paint and then thin and spread on the mini.

    I'm in the market for some new paint and quite like the 'artist palette' approach. How would you compare or contrast these with the pro acryl range Vince?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 роки тому +2

      I honestly like them both very much. Pro Acryl obviously has a wider range of colors, but these are a little more pigment intense (though both are quite rich). I have been using both of them interchangably and I am really enjoying them together.

    Great review Vince! Thanks. One question though: what paper are you using on your wet palette in this video? I've the same palette but my paper doesn't have the grid lines like yours.

    I’ve been enjoying these paints a lot. They have really forced me to understand color more. I have run into an issue with the paints having a fair amount of grittiness to them. Have you run into this issue? Any idea on how to solve this? I have shaken them for a few minutes before use and I still find small chunks of what I assume to be pigment, especially with the yellows and oxide brown. I feel like there is an easy fix that I am missing. Thanks for all you do, Vince.

      I've been using these paints for a while now and tbh I've never had this issue. May be a bad batch?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 роки тому

      Never run into the issue, I always use a vortex mixer so that might be affecting something, but it could be a bad batch or one that got frozen, but I would say maybe look at a deeper shake.

    Unrelated question : you changed the original paper of the Redgrass wet palette. What's the reason? After I heard some reviews where the reviewer was not that sold on how it behaves I'm not sure if it's right for me.
    So what are your thoughts after using it for a very long time?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 роки тому +1

      I did, it's just Reynolds Baking Paper, there was no real reason for the change other than Like I can cut it to size easier, I never had a problem with the base paper and use it often still. Its just what I have at hand. :)

      Vince Venturella do you find the redgrass palette with the parchment paper to behave more like the redgrass with original paper or more like a home made one with parchment paper? What i really want to know is what is more important for the final behavior, the fancy sponge ir the fancy paper. I’d think about upgrading my home made wet palette with a redgrass but i find costly and impractical to rely on theyr specific paper

    They seem to be great paints. I'm yet to try out Warcolours. Pro Acryl and Kimera, gotta do that someday, especially Warcolours.
    They would hit a home run if they did a smaller bottles too, around 17ml. Sometimes I find myself mixing paints on palette when I'm too lazy to grab a pot of color I need, but that can turn out not the greatest when painting part of an army. Can be good when doing this for characters, but when doing for only part of troops I feel bad, mostly because I know I won't remember the recipe (I'm too lazy for my own good, should start noting down the recipes). Sometimes mixing leads to interesting results, like for example: I was mixing inks in my airbrush, testing it out, and I managed to come up with a nice orange. Shame it was a lot of trial and error mixing, so I don't have a specific recipe. But one hormagaunt has great looking carapace no, which is nice.
    I have similar problem with my Imperial Knight painting project. His armor plates were painted at the same time, with a lot of on the fly experimentation. Later I found 2 plates I've missed on the sprue, as well as protective guards on guns. I'm not sure if I can replicate that same style now :/
    Great review!
