  • Telecom Australia, formerly known as the Australian Telecommunications Commission (ATC), was the government-owned telecommunications provider in Australia until its privatization and rebranding in the 1990s. Established in 1901, it played a crucial role in developing and maintaining Australia's telecommunications infrastructure for much of the 20th century.
Telecom Australia was responsible for providing a wide range of telecommunications services, including landline telephone services, telegraphy, and later, early data services like Telex. It also played a significant role in the introduction of new technologies such as microwave and satellite communications.
In the 1990s, Telecom Australia underwent a series of reforms aimed at introducing competition into the telecommunications market and privatizing the industry. As a result, it was split into two separate entities: Telstra Corporation Limited, which retained the infrastructure and became the dominant telecommunications provider in Australia, and a new regulatory body, the Australian Communications Authority (ACA), now known as the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), to oversee the industry.
