In his comments on his preparation for the 1960 world championship match, Tal wrote that he felt Botvinnik would lose confidence when confronted with a "combinational storm." The above game seems to confirm that...yet in their rematch, Botvinnik handled Tal almost effortlessly. When asked for the key ingredient of his winning recipe, Botvinnik said "Limiting the scope of Tal's pieces." It's almost too droll for words.
"I was surprised by his ability to figure out complex variations. Then the way he sets out the game; he was not interested in the objectivity of the position, whether it's better or worse, he only needed room for his pieces. All you do then is figure out variations which are extremely difficult. He was tactically outplaying me and I made mistakes." -Botvinnik, after losing the world title to Tal
Crazy! The thing is that Tal must have known he could calculate deeper into the position and more accurately than his opponents so he knew he could get away with subpar sacrifices. Incredible that he could play like this against the world's best and demolish his opponents on the chessboard.
With the new era of chess players, Tal will not be tal anymore, i love Tal for his confidence and his way of brilliant moves but with computer analysis and prearrangement games, he wouldnt stand a chance againta the new generation, so if he would be playing today he would lost many games. He admitted it with hus famous quote:"There are 2 types of sacrifices, the right way and mine" only the psycological impact and stress brought by his magnificent moves
Only dont forget that if Tal was young and in his prime now, would have access to the same computers and would take his imagination to a new level...For his time he was legit!
Dear Mato Sir, I like your videos and I enjoy watching them, only because, you're straight at the point and with amazing commentary and you give the great inside of the game in very limited time. My Game has really improved a lot. Thank You So Much. If you are coming here in India (Mumbai) then please do let me know. I will be very much honored to serve you here. God Bless You, Sir.
All this talk about modern players... Please dont forget that if Tal was young and in his prime now, would have access to the same computers and would take his imagination to a new level...For his time he was legit!
What a beast! Yet, I seen online patzers claiming Tal wasn't that good because some computer program found some of his moves unsound. In the computer age everyone is an expert.
There is no doubt that tal is the best chess player of all time. And how did he achieve this by thinking outside the box , I guess you could call it anti logic.
A 6.45, why black doesn't chess with the bishop from e5 to h2; so the white king is forced to eat, rook can take the white bishop on f1 and get a better position?
Mato what is your thought if Tal was still available till now and play blitz, what will be your prediction of his game against likes of Carlsen and others?
I gurantee Tal would dominate today, as the computer minded players would not be able to comprehend his sacrifices. If I am wrong Mato let me know. In the chess world your word is law
A great attacking player and world champion. We may never know if all his sacrifices were sound but had a knack for finding a way of mixing it up. His style reminds me of Bobby Fischer but he had the benefit of smoking tobacco. Rightly called the magician from Riga!
Thanks for reply Sir. I am a beginner in chess. I sometime see tal's sacrifices and variations. But how to improve my chess? I want to beat my opponent in tal's style.
Tal is my favorite player but his games will not hold up to modern standard computer chess era. As Fischer said, his sacs are fundamentally unsound and even Tal knows that. But what Tal specialized in was his imagination, creativity and effect on the psychology of the players. Not much people can do that in an era where high level chess is usually about memorization and playing safely. Tal was unlike any other. Only Tal can pull off Tal
may I suggest "botvinnik's clumsiest moves" as a title instead ? I feel I could have played this, his, game! and I am one of the worst chess players on the planet !
Welcome sir ,its our duty to hit the like button after watching beautiful presentation of mato jellic with excellent analysis ,keep going sir,we all are with you,plz allow us donate something for developement of your channel, plz mention paypal links at the end#suggesion
Mato i have advise for you. Your videos thumbnail are really ugly and don't encorage to visit your videos. Look at authers youtube chess channels thumbnail they are just fantastic. I love your channel but you really have to improve your thumbnails.
If i may, you should invest in a good microphone, once we look at a game the video part isn't the most important (as we look at a chessboard), but the reverberation in your voice makes the video unpleasant to follow. Some mics are very affordable and they'd do a great difference. My 2 cents, obviously.

When it comes to sacrifises, no one can beat Tal.
My all time Favourite.
Mato, keep it up.
God bless you.
Zuhaib Hassan No Rashid Nezhmetdinov beats Tal on sacrifices and Tal doesn't stand against nezhmetdinov.
1.Nezhemtdinov 2.Tal
Alexander Alekhine is crazy with sacrifices too. Go and look up some of his games.

Preston Thompson awesome

Supernova s
_"Botvinnik is a chess artist, I am a chess gambler."_
Tal is the man, just love his games. what a gift to the chess world
I waited 2 days before I watch this, because Tal's game is your best Christmas present for me. Merry Christmas Sir Mato.
Soy nuevo en este canal, gracias por compartir partidas de mi ajedrecista favorito
i always said TAL : The Anti Logic
This better be Tal.
Tal's sacrifice came like a bolt from the blue and the G.M across the board is jolted by it. They hardly recovered from initial shock.
Tal is the only person Fischer finds very hard to beat.
From the very first move I knew that Mikhail would win.
With the new era of chess players, Tal will not be tal anymore, i love Tal for his confidence and his way of brilliant moves but with computer analysis and prearrangement games, he wouldnt stand a chance againta the new generation, so if he would be playing today he would lost many games. A great video Mato. Thank u very much.
Ah, some classic Tal. The goat of sacrifices.
I love chess. I once a college champion and board 1 in inter office chess tournament. A medal and trophy at my disposal. Thanks mato.

The CRAZY WIZARD called TAL.
All this talk about modern players...
Please dont forget that if Tal was young and in his prime now, would have access to the same computers and would take his imagination to a new level...For his time he was legit!
That's exactly what people are forgetting. Tal can also use computers, while adding his own spin
Thanks for posting!
I enjoy watching your video,, especially your humor...
Tal was on the chessboard what Maradona was on the football pitch
Your voice is my favorite voice of all time. I’m a long time subscriber. I love you Mato.
Thank you
Tal gets an instant like!
Thanks Mato! Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! Wishing you continued success with your chess channel.
Nice game. Tal winning with black peices is rare
Could you please flip the board, so we can play from The Winning Side next time? Thanks.
What a beast! Yet, I seen online patzers claiming Tal wasn't that good because some computer program found some of his moves unsound. In the computer age everyone is an expert.
I think it would have been better to rotate the board and get Black's perspective view
There is no doubt that tal is the best chess player of all time. And how did he achieve this by thinking outside the box , I guess you could call it anti logic.
I remember enjoying Mato's chess videos when I was 16, I never expected him to be such a silver fox haha, wow
A 6.45, why black doesn't chess with the bishop from e5 to h2; so the white king is forced to eat, rook can take the white bishop on f1 and get a better position?
@ minute 7:44...
Why Tal did not take the Knight with white square bishop ??🤔
Mato I really like the videos when you put the board on the side of the winner
Excellently explained. A thrilling game. Subscribed :)
At 7:18 why doesn't Rxe2 work?
Rxe2 Ra8+ Kg7 Bxe2 and black has a bishop and pawn for a rook (which I think is a draw but definitely white is better)
I think this Tal fellow might have been quite good at chess.
Another great video Mato.
When you get a Mato notification whilst your playing a game of chess
Great analysis ^^
At 9.38 I think Tal could have a chance for having one piece ahead...
what if tal's sacrifices actually made nothing for him and he was just disrespecting opponents with winning minus a piece?
Tal and Alekhine my favorite
Mine too. How sad that they never played (different eras)
Merry Christmas Mato!
Champions of 1960 It's Tal Sacrifice Style
Mato you're the best!!!
Why not Bishop take knight on e2 at 7:38
Maybe, because then Rook to e3 is played and the king has to stay on the white square
ahh, i missed rook e3
Well no.. the king just takes the rook and white wins..
I would have played Bxe2 at 7:44... but then again Re3+
Rook to a2 would be a better position for white, instead of rook to c7
Fantastic!
Damn, I have learned much from you, Mato.
tal the most entertaining , he is my number 1 idol
please have a rook in the description below the video
Hi Mato, thank you , I really enjoy your videos and comments , but may I ask you please to go slower little bit
Tal is God of Chess for me
A great attacking player and world champion. We may never know if all his sacrifices were sound but had a knack for finding a way of mixing it up. His style reminds me of Bobby Fischer but he had the benefit of smoking tobacco. Rightly called the magician from Riga!
I like how Mato smile..
mato sir, pls download mikhail tal chess champion app from playstore ( chess king)....there are 2600 tal games
Hello Mato. Sir I have a question why modern players don't play like tal?
Tal had an extraordinary imagination
Thanks for reply Sir. I am a beginner in chess. I sometime see tal's sacrifices and variations. But how to improve my chess? I want to beat my opponent in tal's style.
Please first see keres video then rashid nezmetdinov and then tal
Thanks ghans

I love how u say "lecture" like an aussie would say it "lecha" because u live in australia, but u say with with ur own accent :)
'Position is complex' =D
Mato my advice you should invest in a new microphone, my advice look into Brüel & Kjær very high quality
Mato I like your old method that you take your time to explain moves better. And yes I know you downloaded this game form somewhere else.
I didn't want to explain to match for a reason. I left it to Lenederman whose DVD I was advertising
Okay then but who buys DVDs these days...
People buy. Suprise, suprise
Mato leave the 2000 and join us in almost 2018 where people stream stuff on their smart phones. That's where the money is.
Why does Tal look exactly like Keegan Michael Key
Fisher was probably the greatest player ever, but Tal was the greatest artist!
inb4 Karpov
WOW! CRAZY GAME!
Nice
may I suggest "botvinnik's clumsiest moves" as a title instead ? I feel I could have played this, his, game! and I am one of the worst chess players on the planet !
You can just talk normal Mato. We wont judge
i like your voice
