- Want to support the podcast? / saltyabandon This video is for true sailboat geeks. Footage from 11-19-15 when I bought my Island Packet 27 sailboat. Seller set-up the boat well for cruising & here he is teaching me about the components, electronics, etc. You can tell how GREEN I am in the video. However, I've since sailed Salty Abandon to the Keys in Jun 2016 & Bahamas Nov 2016. I LOVE MY ISLAND PACKET 27 & SET-UP!

I love that the radio was tuned to the "Elvis" channel.I applaud your achievements of the last 18 months.I always enjoy seeing your videos as I have an affection for Island Packets.
lol....yes, I noticed the channel, too. Too funny. Thank you for watching, T Knox! Headed to the Keys again next month!
It's hard to beat an Island Packet
Thank you! I'm ready to take off South again. Waiting to see what will happen with state of things.
great video. especially for sailboat nerds;-)
I've been looking for a boat and the island packet looks pretty cool. I have a 21 ft clipper
Thanks for watching, Dan. I love my IP!
Thank you could live aboard that or is it too small?
Depends on how much space you need...but I would say yes!
I'm looking at a 1988 IP 27 to purchase and they said it has some blisters. Were your blisters just paint blisters or was there any repairs needed? I will find out once we do a survey but just wanted to know if this is common on IP's or not. Keep up the great vids! Cheers.
Hi - what roller reefing system did you put in place of the club foot on the Staysail? I'd like to do the same on our IP 27...just a tiny bit concerned about tacking the genoa thru...
It came with that set-up when I bought the boat. I have an IP320 now with the clubfoot. I honestly prefer it without it on my IP27.
If you haven't upgraded to an MPPT charge controller for the solar, OMG, do it! Last year I was running the same type PWM controller with 200w and at BEST (keep in mind I'm up in the chesapeake bay) I could get pushing in was 7-8amps. NOW, I can push over 12amps on a sunny day and more than triple the amps on a cloudy day. The MPPT pulls the volts down like PWM but increases the amps therefore the loss of watts is near zero. With PWM the volts are pulled down to battery voltage but amps do not change, therefore you loose serious power in the early AM and late evening. And if the batts are low, you loose even more. Definitely worth a brush up on that tech if you or anyone reading hasn't. I have PWM at my home and I'm replacing it ASAP with MPPT. Never going back.
I used the EPSolar MPPT controller, the 30amp model with remote monitor. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It's like doubling the solar panels up on the Bimini!!!
SailingExodus I will check it out;
Actually you just swap the PWM for the MPPT. Connections are the same.... Battery, Solar... and the Load. So it's a straight swap. Took me almost an hour with a Corona break. Physically the MPPT will be larger, but taller not wider so it should fit right in there.
Battery gets hooked FIRST.
Can you send me a link to the component I can switch out?
This is the one I used. Its bigger but has the same connections to Batt, Solar, Load. There's reviews of a sailor installing one on his boat here on YT as well.

Why did you replace your chain plates? Did you see corrosion or just based on age?
Hi, one of my chainplates broke last year going across the Gulf so I had all of them replaced as well as the standing rigging. I'm set for very long time now. I actually did a video on the chain plates because I discovered (through breaking a chain plate) that Island Packets have a unique chain plate situation. Luckily a rigger in St Pete was able to find a unique solution. In this video I show pictures and explain how they fixed me up. ua-cam.com/video/mUZfQn2uAjQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=S%2FVSaltyAbandon

Thanks. I also have a 1988 IP 27 but with original chain plates. I keep inspecting the first 1" below the toe rail then recaulk. It's nice to know that your solution is much less cost than tearing the inside apart! Fair winds
Sailing Vessel Southern Lady you still have to take apart the ceilings to get to the inside of the chain plates to install the nuts and lockwashers. But it sure beats the grinding and re-glassing to fix it the conventional way
