Sir, you are so right! Super, concentration to play softly requires control therefore energy to control breath and muscles. Excellent video….thank you.
Merci and a well timed video. I've only been playing for 18 months and was frustrated with my lack of progress. I picked up two old fashioned method books, La Méthode Rose and John Thompson, and started on page one of Volume One. In two weeks I'm almost done and it has helped sightreading as well as dynamics. This fits in nicely.
Awesome video👍👍👍 Thank you for making how to express dynamic so clearly. Love your channel! It has been super helpful! I enjoy every piece of music you played during your teaching. So beautiful!👏👏👏
Since you mentioned that the piano could be an issue in trouble playing softly, could you do a video talking about how to tell if one's piano is well-regulated? Well-regulated is a term much mentioned but little explained in detail
You explained it so well, Robert. I heard this from my teacher as well but a few words from you clarified this for me. My challenge is that I play digital piano and I have been struggling with playing with well contrasting dynamics.
@@mfurman that's okay. The gradations of digital pianos are practically infinite. Maybe you can update your digital someday. Always start with what you have! Some people don't have anything!
@@Halley-z2z Do you mean to rent the piano or pay for time at the acoustic piano? I cannot rent the piano itself because I do not have anywhere to put it on the ground level of my house (and the stairs to the higher levels of it are too difficult to manoeuvre). There is no really any church or institution (University said no to me) where are have a good access to a good piano.
Robert, playing softly even on a "regulated" upright I am finding difficult... & sometimes getting ' ghost notes'. Suggestions are much appreciated (don't have space for a grand)
Hello Michael, did you ever find a solution? I have a regulated upright and when I go to my piano lesson, playing on a baby grand, I am so used to playing so lightly to keep my upright soft that I am not even getting any sound!
I think my piano is messed up. Some keys need more force than others to produce the same volume. I’m talking about adjacent keys, not from opposite ends of the keyboard. Is this an issue tuning could fix?
Have it regulated! A certified technician will adjust the let off, key dip, blow, and a number of other fine tuning of the action and keys. typcally a good basic regulation, depending on where you live, will be around $1,000 - $1,500. ua-cam.com/video/-gNzVwbk9-Q/v-deo.html
Just to let you know, the recording is much too low. I can barely hear you and my computer sound is turned to max. Otherwise, great information regarding playing softly, maybe too softly for this video (just joking).
The level is the same as all my videos. Please check other videos on my channel (and other channels) and please let me know if this video sounds quieter to you. Robert@LivingPianos.com
Fine for me as well. Thank you for a clear and consise lesson. I now know what I am trying to achieve a piano sound in a minuet by Mozart. How would the finger/arm action differ when playing forte or mf?

You just exude love when you speak! It's much appreciated in this sometimes crazy world. Thank you for all you do!
Thank you!
Wow, it is so light and breathable, it is pure beauty of the music, thank you.
This video was super helpful - thank you!

Another great video that connects artistry to a simple idea about the physical and technical. Of course, simpler to say than to do well.
My son is just understanding how dimentional music is, your videos are so helpful, thank you for sharing:-)

Awesome video! Actually am working on bringing this sonata back into my repertoire. I love playing this 2nd movement

The more you play on different pianos the better your dynamics will become! It's a long process!!
@@artmusicliterature9859 I wish I could. I know that it it desired or ever required but I will never have an acoustic or even hybrid digital piano

@@mfurman you can also rent an acoustic piano time to time in order to try different nuances.

Good job 🙂🙂🙂
Great way to compare with breathing.

i love the sound of a soft piano... ;-)
By the way , Mr. Estrin, which piano were you playing in this presentation ?

Buy a new piano!
Talk to a piano tuner to see if the hammers need to be filed.
Very clear. Thank you Robert. 👍🏾🤗🎹
