    That should be a severe penalty for Ryan Hunter-Reay ... especially after his post race interview. He basically admitted to just turn into him despite the spotter clearly saying inside and he knew he was still there. Robert Wickens was with the half car alongside at entry!

    • @Blue_Monkey
      @Blue_Monkey 6 років тому +3

      MetalMastodon You seem not to understand how oval racing works and the racing rules of motorsports in general (incl. gentleman's agreement)
      If someone is halfway alongside you, you don't turn in, no matter if he deserves to be there or not. They drive at over 200 mph (300+kph) and you wanna risk the drivers lives? Also Wickens has a right to be there and also in fairness he was not just with his frontwing there, he was with half the car next to him - that is pretty substantial - at the point of contact it looks like a lot less, because Wickens realized that Hunter-Reay is going to turn into him, so he tried to pull out (notice also how he was driving on the yellow inside line already trying hard to avoid contact)!
      If he had enough momentum, we would have seen at the next corner - taking the rest of the race as reference he probably would have been alongside in the next corner again - but everything someone says in that regard is speculation.
      Yes it was kinda intentional. He knew that a car was there, the spotter told him aswell - never cleared him. He turned into him on purpose in that way, which he admitted. This must be punished, especially because Hunter-Reay doesn't realize his mistake!
      *This is so wrong:* _"Going into turn 2 at Pocono is not a place you really want to pass someone unless it is going to be complete BY entry. And if RHR had moved up, he likely would have just ended up in the wall himself"_
      We saw sidebyside in that race (and also in the past) in the corners with no problems! I remind you, this is one of the top tier openwheeler motorsports (in regards to ovals it is the top tier you can drive in), these guys are experienced and not some amateurs ; you can clearly expect such things!
      _"Instead he did what almost any driver would have done"_ - expect for douches, no driver turns into other cars on purpose.

    Welp, that's what happens when you'd rather hold your line from behind and initiate contact vs a tap of your brakes. Its lap 8 of 200, so not sure when him and other similarly over agressive drivers are thinking in these stiuations, but often times the driver in front is in more danger in these situations and drivers from the back never think twice about initiating contact when all they'd have to do is just a little nanosecond off the throttle.

      on the seconds of the video the accident around 0:34, car # 6 the marshall arrives around 1:05 so 30 seconds a chance that there was no fire and the automatic systems do not always work depending on the damage . Car # 5 around 1:40 so 65 seconds, car 28 2:10 so 96 seconds !!!!!!!!!! pitiful, drivers can burn several times ............ In F1, these delays are not acceptable.

    I just want to know why the safety crew is so slow. That one truck came around pretty quick but the guy driving the red truck acts like he is lost. Driving really slow when they should have been on the track.

    Today marks 1258 days since Robert Wickens raced competitively after people thought he’d never race again.
    Daytona, racing for Hyundai, would see him claim his maiden podium. What an absolute hero! 🏆

    I remember watching this live as it happened. I was horrified. At the time it was the worst accident I'd ever seen as a racing fan, unfortunately Ryan Newman's near-fatal crash at the Daytona 500 in 2020 eclipsed this for said record. I was scarred so much from this specific incident, however, that in fact, I couldn't watch these guys go back out and race again when the damn thing was restarted. I couldn't look at the tv screen and see the cars fly by at breakneck speeds without thinking of the lap 7 accident and the uncertain outcome it had at the time. It was just too traumatizing. In all the years I've watched motorsport to this day, that's the only time I could recall watching a race scared after a crash. Unforgettable. Glad Robert survived. Not sure how long it'll be until he's back behind the wheel after the gruesome crash he accidentally caused, but I'd be happy as fuck to see him compete after everything that'd went down. At this point if he can muster up a decent recovery and complete a race I'd be happy and my heart would be, or close to being, full. Crashes like this are things I never wish on anyone, even the drivers I despise most. Hopefully we don't see anything like this in IndyCar, other open-wheel series, shit any division, anytime soon, regardless of it being asphalt or dirt.

    As a resident of Guelph and an Indycar fan it was devastating to see Wickens crash this badly. Not only because we are from the same city but he was a rookie to Indycar and he was doing so well his first year.

    Man, 20 years ago he would not get out of that. Thank God for the safety advancements, as much as we often complain about the 'glory days' when drivers were 'braver'.
    This is still a dangerous sport, and we count the little blessings that he was able to see another day, and recover slowly.

      Bubba wallace Fan Nah I wouldn’t say that. Wickens’ accident was cockpit to fence post while Dillon’s accident was a more full car impact. That’s how Dillon was able to skirt right out of the car uninjured.
