That should be a severe penalty for Ryan Hunter-Reay ... especially after his post race interview. He basically admitted to just turn into him despite the spotter clearly saying inside and he knew he was still there. Robert Wickens was with the half car alongside at entry!
MetalMastodon You seem not to understand how oval racing works and the racing rules of motorsports in general (incl. gentleman's agreement) If someone is halfway alongside you, you don't turn in, no matter if he deserves to be there or not. They drive at over 200 mph (300+kph) and you wanna risk the drivers lives? What I find deplorable and unacceptable is the delay of the response teams. There are many places in the world that in less than 10 seconds there is at least a marshall nearby and very often at the same time an instinctor.
The response time was fine you can see the first AMR track coming around the bend as some of crashed cars are still rolling the truck nearest the camera was likely held for a few seconds because it had to go the wrong direction on the track to get to the cars.
Yeah, You see F1 track like spa of 7km and marahalls are there in less than 20 sevonds, while in Indy and specially NASCAR, i mean its an oval track, you can get there real quick

Today marks 1258 days since Robert Wickens raced competitively after people thought he’d never race again. Daytona, racing for Hyundai, would see him claim his maiden podium. What an absolute hero! 🏆
I remember watching this live as it happened. I was horrified. At the time it was the worst accident I'd ever seen as a racing fan, unfortunately Ryan Newman's near-fatal crash at the Daytona 500 in 2020 eclipsed this for said record. I was scarred so much from this specific incident, however, that in fact, I couldn't watch these guys go back out and race again when the damn thing was restarted. I couldn't look at the tv screen and see the cars fly by at breakneck speeds without thinking of the lap 7 accident and the uncertain outcome it had at the time. It was just too traumatizing. In all the years I've watched motorsport to this day, that's the only time I could recall watching a race scared after a crash. Unforgettable. Glad Robert survived. Not sure how long it'll be until he's back behind the wheel after the gruesome crash he accidentally caused, but I'd be happy as fuck to see him compete after everything that'd went down. At this point if he can muster up a decent recovery and complete a race I'd be happy and my heart would be, or close to being, full. Crashes like this are things I never wish on anyone, even the drivers I despise most. Hopefully we don't see anything like this in IndyCar, other open-wheel series, shit any division, anytime soon, regardless of it being asphalt or dirt.
