Not a good railfanning day in New Jersey. 5/22/24.

  • A nice sunny warm day railfanning at Metropark and New Brunswick went sour as Amtrak experiences downed wires in the Jersey Meadows. Trains came to a halt in New Brunswick as the line was closed between Metropark and NYC. By 8:30 PM the line was still closed and I had to resort to alternate transportation back to New York City. We enjoy a good mix of NJT and Amtrak trains as well as bad public address pronunciations prior to the deterioration of service. As a result, I didn’t have dinner until 11 PM at home when I had planned to have dinner in the city, but I was trying to beat the Rangers crowd back home.

What a difficult day for railfanning! A good mix of Amtrak and NJ transit trains though. Sorry it turned sour and you experienced a very late arrival home. Thanks Tim

It was a rough day for sure. But hey, I got a rare opportunity to use the Newark Light Rail as I abandoned Newark Penn Station where there were no trains in favor of catching the #59 bus over by the Newark Museum. That bus hits some of the same spots as the Raritan Valley Line as it makes a long, 23-mile journey to Dunellen (which when you think about it is very far for a local bus to run, stopping every couple blocks). It didn't actually take as long as I thought it would, at least to get as far as I needed to go, but there were people on the bus with me who were going at least to Dunellen and even beyond, and I really felt for them. And then I got home just in time to watch a fairly depressing hockey game, which had me wondering how upset I would be if I had gone to the game upstairs at MSG, then wanted to go downstairs to Penn Station to get home and forget about the game, only to have no trains running.

I was actually coming in to Penn station after the Hudson rail excursion and saw a whole crowd waiting for Nj Transit. Didn’t know what happened until seeing your video makes a whole lot more sense to why there was so many people. Great video and some awesome catches.

Back Bay is in Boston but the final station stop is in downtown Boston its called South Station. Between each stop is 5 minutes and the trains usually do a slow crawl between the two. Why the short stops for a long distance train? Not sure.

I was railfanning yesterday afternoon at Rahway. Unfortunately, or so I thought at the time, I had to head back home earlier than planned - about three hours earlier. I left rahway near four instead of around seven. Turns out my equipment being annoying was a blessing in disguise.
Edit: I believe I was actually on the same westbound train as you.

Love that station. I live about the same distance from S.Amboy and Metropark, but used Metropark for the year I worked in Jersey City. Usually caught 3708 going in and either 3721 or 3723 (which was almost always Arrows) coming back from Newark. Parking there is pretty good and I always found the NJT crews to be mostly very friendly and professional. And nice seeing Amtrak ACS-64 608. I think have the HO scale model of that.

At least he/it mentioned all the intermediate stops where as here in Sydney depending on which line you travel on here's an example T2 Inner West line the announcer say first stop Redfern then all stations to Strathfield then all station to Granville then Harris Park and Parramatta.

They were talking about the situation yesterday evening on the major news channels WABC-7 WNBC-4 & WCBS-2 some of the lines actually got their service to or from Penn Station suspended like the RVL. The good news is there was a NJ Transit website that tells passengers of the affected train line alternate transport options. New Brunswick Coach USA 100 bus also the station does get RVL passengers as alternative option.
If you look at the replacement trains the MLV III they might be formed of two existing multi-level I-II cabs with MLV III power car

This was the second catenary issue on Amtrak in the past few days. My guess is the extreme heat of 90 + degrees caused the wires to sag and stretch. But tensioned or 'weighted' catenary is supposed to compensate for that. Maybe a pantograph broke. If Amtrak had the dual mode locomotives I heard they are buying, they could have helped in the emergency. NJT should have pressed their dual mode locomotives into service on the NEC.

I was gonna be buffing at Newark Airport yesterday afternoon but my train to Newark hit a car! what a day yesterday! felt a shock and then went straight into emergency. they held us on the train for an hour so police could clear the scene and they had to shut off the catenary so it was steaming in the car by the end. almost glad that I didn't make it out because the corridor wasn't good either, for a completely unrelated reason.

I saw the news stories last night; I'm glad I'm here in Georgia! Why would a passing train cause lines to come down, and if it happened in the meadowlands, why couldn't inbound trains have been able to at least get to Newark? Then passengers would at least have been able to switch to PATH. I guess there is an advantage to third rails.
