The popular varnam “Mohamana” is the Tamil adaptation of the original Telugu varnam “Nee Saati Dora” in the ragam Bhairavi, composed by Tanjore Quartet Ponnayya (1804-1864). “Nee Saati Dora” likely debuted in September 1827 and was presented as a gift by the quartet brothers to their patron, Maharajah Serfoji II (reign: 1798-1832), on his 50th birthday. “Nee Saati Dora” remained a popular varnam until the early 20th century when the varnam was adapted with Tamil lyrics.
