Law enforcement is an inherently REACTIVE concept, not proactive. In other words, they respond to crimes that have already occurred, they don't prevent crime or violence. No human, man woman or child, should rely on any other entity to protect them. If someone is kicking your door in or running at you with a weapon, you don't have time to call someone to show up to protect you. Police aren't personal security or body guards. They give tickets, arrest people who have already committed crimes, and investigate past actions. Allowing yourself to think that police are supposed to protect you is the same thing as choosing to be a victim, and any cop would tell you this, it's not a secret.

Yes, a guy trying to murder a political figure with a hammer gets a life sentence. That makes sense regardless of how you feel about Pelosi.
The minimum sentence this guy can get is 19mos for dv battery. Kidnapping is minimum mandatory 4yrs with a maximum life in prison WITHOUT the dv enhancement.
Certain crimes are serious enough it doesn't matter whether there are prior and significant enough the DA will prioritize and take to trial if they can't get 10yrs. This wasn't in Wisconsin or Los Angeles/San Francisco where they care more about criminals than public safety.

I had to run from a terribly dangerous and unstable man once over thirty years ago, and you never forget that terror...I can't imagine how you did it with a brand new baby! I ran to a complete strangers home on a cold New Year's eve. I was fortunate that a lovely young Mom was willing to let me in. I was disheveled and frightened and injured and must have been wild eyed, and she could not have been kinder. One of my biggest regrets is not knowing her name so I could properly thank her later.

Agreed. Did you notice that among his charges was one involving strangulation? When I worked with domestic violence victims in the 1980s, every single woman I helped that had been choked out said that they went out convinced that they were dying. One of the most viscerally terrifying experiences to go through and she was holding it together better than he was.

Police stations should have a program where women volunteer to help with domestic violence calls and any calls involving children to help the woman or kids, while providing comfort and care. Even though the male cops are there to help, it is still very scary when a bunch of men are yelling and creating chaos. We should be able to take the woman out of the situation once it is clear to do so, keep her safe and comfort her. In any calls involving children we should be able to gather any children, take them away from the scene and take care of them while the other police officers handle the call. I would absolutely volunteer to do that. All I kept thinking the entire time was "she needs some water" "she needs a blanket" "she seems so terrified and alone" "she needs someone to help calm her down before she starts to try and answer questions" "she needs someone to be there with her"....
