My challenge is with chord fingering, G7 is half way beneath C. I can't leave one covered while playing the other so I pull off G7 while playing C and vice versa. Then I have to get the "off" finger back on the right chord and remove the other one. I guess it's just practice. Would it work to use one finger for both buttons, back and forth? I've played guitar for 60 years I guess I can train my fingers differently for autoharp but I'm not sure of the best way to approach this challenge.
You could always move the cords location.
Righto got all my picks, ready to learn melodies. Get the difficult stuff outta the way first then relax later with strumming, good advice.

Another great learning tool! My question - Tabs for chords are easy to find, but where can you go to find the melody notes?
Well if by melody notes you mean melody notes specifically tabbed for autoharp, then you have to seek out autoharp books or the autoharp quarterly. If by melody notes you mean the notes to the tune written out, but not specifically tabbed for autoharp, there are all kinds of resources like fake books, sheet music, etc etc...but you have to transcribe them yourself. Online you can search "somewhere over the rainbow sheet music .pdf " but generally only old music can be found this way for free because of copyright. If the song is younger than 75 years sheet music must be paid for...and people who post it free are liable. So be prepared to pay a few bucks or to figure it out from the chords. Technically chords and lyrics, if posted and still 75 or younger are illegal, too.

I notice that you've removed the top string on your 'harp. Why?
Well, at first it was because I had a different set of chord bars on there, that was made for a 36 string harp, and was too narrow. But also, when I play it Prizim style, I tend to lay it down more, cradling it like a baby...which means my arm has to pass over the tuning pins a bit at the top end....it's not perfect, but having that top string off gives me a bit more room without the pin griding into my arm. Thirdly, in my opinion, autoharp can be entirely too high and bright...I prefer the lower strings and a darker tone...to that end, I've even dropped my tuning...all my strings are tuned down a whole step....darker, less penetrating tone, and a bit quieter too. Makes the strings feel a bit less tense under my fingers. So given that I don't like the high notes all that much, why have another one??

LoL...I was worried about people getting lost in the detail...hence the "sweats" in the video....a little comic relief to lighten things up. Also, it was a very detailed video to make....so if it is popular, I'll have to keep doing them...I can see teaching lots of different songs this way. I just have to streamline the editing process so it's a little easier. I'm learning too!
Hal Weeks You are a great teacher. The chord patterns that you pointed out and the way you pointed to the chord on the chart while singing the words really helped me make sense of where the melody notes were coming from. I wouldn’t expect you to do that again. Doing it for a sample song helped something click (for me). Now, I understand the difference between the rhythm backup chords and the chords needed to pick out the melody. OK, most people, other than me, understand that stuff automatically. Many thanks.
Sounds like you have the ability to take the concept and run with it and apply it anywhere...that's good...exactly what I hope people will do!
