  • This video is an expose on what exactly is a "Mountain Blonde Morel," or the 'Western Blonde Morel.' This is one of the most beautiful and elusive of all of the natural morels, and one of the most tasty. It grows where it wants, not dependent on any tree or plant, it acts much like a saprobe and can pop up in the most unusual of places. In this video I encountered some under Big Leaf Maple, a very unlikely tree to have mushrooms growing with or beneath it, but as with most mushrooms, once I think I know something for sure about them, they go ahead and prove me wrong. Thanks for watching this remix video where I repurposed some older footage and re-cut it in a way to make a complete understanding of this gorgeous mushroom possible.

We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. Even the most edible of mushrooms contain compounds that can be tough for the human digestive tract to handle. Some “edible” species have small amounts of certain toxins that will easily break down with cooking. Fungi contains a molecule known as chitin that is the same thing that makes the exoskeleton of shellfish so hard, and cannot be broken down by the human digestive system, so it is another good reason to thoroughly cook mushrooms. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

I just moved further north than I’ve ever been (northern Alberta) and I’m anxiously awaiting morel season. I’m not used to spring coming so late. For now, I will live through you & your videos😅

Great video, thank you for posting, morels are great because they grow where they want, amazing to see them growing with cedar, maple and sword ferns!

I remember seeing that episode when you found all them morels in that randomly weird out of place spot. I was so excited with you watching along while you filled up them "breathable reusable plastic bags" 😅 with little goodies! Like kids on Halloween!

This will be my 3rd season watching your videos and still yet to find a Morrell myself. I'm just north of you in Whatcom County. I can confidently ID alot of other mushroom varieties. But those Morrells are elusive! I can feel it though, 2024 is the year! Wish me luck. 🍄😎🍄

I heard from someone that they seemed to have better luck in a lowland burn around the maples than any of the conifers and I was wondering. Another fascinating datapoint.

Dude, the video of that Morel flush is absolutely AMAZING! I’m on my way back now from a local burn, feeling good about getting a bag of nice ones this late in the season but DAMN - that bag of morels you had was epic! Now you’re gonna have me looking totally differently at the woods that surround my house in Olympia, which are just like the woods in the video. BTW I’m looking forward to meeting you and listening tomorrow night at the SSMC!

Whenever I think I’ve figured out morels, they throw a curveball. They reveal themselves when and where they please.

Another beautiful video, with spectacular mushrooms! I can only hope to one day have a find as beautiful as that. Thank you, Aaron, for sharing that with us! 🍄

Aaron, I do have to confess something. . . . I am not a fan of the opening music this year. I really liked the way last years music held more of an eclectic, mysterious edge to it. It seems as though all of the major sports have on occasion throwback days where they will wear their old uniforms. How about a throwback day in the Wonderland where you use the old music montage? You know I love you either way Aaron- mush love from the Hudson Valley of New York🍄

Do you have a way for people to contact you, to verify some mushroom identification? I think I've found agrocybe praecox in my yard. But I'm not positive.

Found Morchella americana in French Canadian mixed forest, putting some back for foragers, they are not buggy either. The Gyromitra esculenta were not as clean.
Tonight's breeding, hot love between a King Bolete and Dryad's Saddle. A King Dryad is the targeted hybridisation, I often see what I planned for. The idea is to have composite fungi (similar to composite florenscenses in flowering species), several fungal fruits upon one body, like a four-headed Porcinin maybe, we will see. Back-crossed to Boletus edulis, an effort to lose the cucumber flavour of the Dryad, in favour of Porcinin flavonoid-producing chemotype.
Caught a five-pound Dryad's Saddle (parent for breeding), with approximately ten heads, I fertilised the large specimen prior to collection.
