Baking and cooking are seriously different skills. Baking is scientific, it's chemistry and it's finicky, it's like playing a symphony that requires timing and precisely measured components. Cooking is expressive, it's possible to recover from most mistakes and it's freestyle, you can just go into a kitchen with the vaguest idea of what direction you want to go in and manage to come out with a great dish.
@@pagecarlee626 Yes and no. Once you get good at baking you can use ratios, or just understand how things work together. I hardly weight or measure anything out when I make cakes or pastries. I've been doing it for over 14 years as a hobby. I'm better at baking than cooking- spice blends and pairings throw me for a loop.

The gravity incident was preventable, but for someone who needs to figure out what the hell he's dealing with, lifting stuff up and looking at the bottom makes total sense. Most things (like actual pastry!) would stick a bit more, after all.
Made a similar comment before reading this one and this is spot on (oh god, i'm speaking English English - I'm from across the pond). Too often the cast picks dishes they know too well and it leaves Jamie and Barry with nothing to really contribute as Ebbers and James (who comes off a mostly a glorified line cook - that could be a show presentation issue) can do most of these dishes in their sleep.
Yeah I don't think it's fair to even grade either Mike or Jamie on this one. They had nothing to work with and couldn't do anything about it. Even if it was Ben and James who came into that they couldn't have saved it.
Jamie almost saved it simply by realizing the buttercream was unsalvageable. If Ben would have just thrown that away and made something new back at minute 20, this could have been better.
I've binge watched like 50 of these, and I think they struggle the most when James starts. He always has a vision, but it's so far above everyone's heads and he doesn't communicate it well, so it just ends in hilarity or disaster. Love watching these!

Its been well over 2 years since this episode was released, i've watched it more times than i can remember, but i can assure you that Barry's face after the first bite and when he says "don't film it" still makes my face hurt from laughing

Very true, Jamie didn't make things better. But by the time it was his 10 minutes, what could he really have done? The cakes were already partially assembled with the inedible rhubarb puree on top in the molds. He would've had to make a completely new pastry in 10 minutes from scratch.

It's pretty much the LEAST Jamie's fault, James introduced the rhubarb and everyone after kept NOT SWEETENING IT, then Mike put it on and there was nothing Jamie could do after that. He at least attempted to add a layer that would mitigate the tartness.
I'd like to see a reimagined version of the reacting to what's happened concept. Basically, after the first person has been, they go into a room and watch and react to the next persons 10 minutes whilst the 2nd goes. Then the 2nd watches the 3rd, the 3rd watches the 4th and the 4th watches the 5th. Rather than be an extra video, it could be edited into the main one, for extra drama and fun!
People have been asking this for months, if not from the very first relay challenge. And they have the perfect set-up for it too, the one they used for the 'chef remote-controlling a normal' video they did in studio. At this point I don't think they'll be doing this. 🤷🏻♀️ It's consistently been a request in the top rated comments on every relay challenge. They've seen it, they have the set-up for it, yet they still haven't done it. Can only deduce that means they don't want to.
Credit where credit is due: Jamie had the best showing out of the five of them. He did well to pivot from whatever that thing in the bowl was to sweetened cream cheese.

Don't get me wrong, I adore James and think his high standards speak to who he is and who he is striving to be as a chef. I just thought passing up premade pastry during a time crunched pass it on challenge was a bit silly 😝
watching James just casually one-handedly halve an egg for like the 3rd time on this channel after also witnessing him effortlessly scalp an avocado stone in a previous video gives me the same energy of "stop praying for my grandfather, he's grown too powerful"

I love these so much, I love Janice's commentary. This social distancing pass it on seems normal but also different. I just like seeing all 5 of them in the same room. I think something that might be nice is a controlled pass it on where one person cooks and everyone takes turns to control them. I love sorted so much, it's so much fun to watch them fumble around then make something that looks nice. I love watching even after all these years, thank you sorted :)
That could work. The guys giving instructions aren't allowed to be vague, they have to give direct literal instructions. For instance, they can't say "We're going to make a buttercream". They have to say "Weigh out 60g of icing sugar and 30g of butter into a bowl. Now whisk them together". Meanwhile, the cook wouldn't be told what they're making, and wouldn't be allowed to speak. This is mostly to prevent Ben from correcting his instructions, or from knowing what he's supposed to be doing.
And like, while I fully support social distancing and masks and all the precautions we take, it kind of feels pointless in these kinds of settings. Like anyone who is making the food is within 6 feet of it getting their micro-droplets on the food. And then they pass that food they just breathed near to someone to eat, who even though they were more than 6 feet apart, but is now going to eat that food, just sort of defeated the whole purpose of doing that social distancing. A more reliable method is to create germ-pods of people, where they are able to be close to and interact with each other, but no one else, and trust is established that everyone is careful and doesn't socialize outside of their germ-pod. The main person I would be concerned with would be Jamie since he has wife and kids, but I don't think any of the others do, I am assuming they all live alone and don't have a partner, but I don't know.
These pass it ons are always incredible but this one really had me crying laughing. Everyone's face eating it and the plate and Jamie's presentation. 10/10

Oh Gods this is what I needed in my life! This is the best thing I have witnessed thus far on Sorted. Ben's face was priceless. I laughed so hard I have tears in my eyes.
To be fair, bread is one thing, and cake is another - a lot of people do one or the other. I make a decent loaf, but damn me if I can't make a cake to save my life.

The difference with his scoring I think is that he rates how well he did the things he did sometimes without factoring in how much it contributes to the dish. So if he did only one thing but did it well he'll give himself a higher score than others might
He absolutely did deserve at least a 6, he basically did a "perfect" job, considering what he had to work with + the time. Aaaand he only had 2 options, the first is the one he went with, he tried to save it, but the dish was beyond any redemption xD The second option was for him to say: "Fuck it" and throw it away and force a re-do of the episode :D

Laughed so hard I cried. There is nothing better than hearing the intro music for a “pass it on”, my heart fills with excitement as I wonder what delightful disaster is in store. May I say, I absolutely love Janice, especially when the all-knowing personality answers questions or makes snarky comments. While you may hate filming these, they always provide the best entertainment and laughs! Thank you for that.

He didn’t make “a cake” - he made a sponge, which could be used (and often are) in layered pastries. Puff only takes 10 minutes to cook, frankly anyone bar Jamie could have got that into the oven to add to the dish. They should have made some rum squares, or some individual takes on a puff pastry cake.
There was NOTHING Jamie could do to save that one, changing the cream component was the best thing he could have done

This is over two years old and I still come back to it from time to time, just to laugh at Barry's shock and surprise when he bites into it.
I started laughing uncontrollably when Jamie tried dusting the 5 "pastries" with icing sugar and didn't stop for a good five minutes.

After calling it BATTER! I can't help remembering the episode where he kept calling a batter "sauce" and thinking he needs some sort of lesson about what batter is.
I love these so much, I love Janice's commentary. This social distancing pass it on seems normal but also different. I just like seeing all 5 of them in the same room.
I think something that might be nice is a controlled pass it on where one person cooks and everyone takes turns to control them.
I love sorted so much, it's so much fun to watch them fumble around then make something that looks nice. I love watching even after all these years, thank you sorted :)
That could work. The guys giving instructions aren't allowed to be vague, they have to give direct literal instructions.
For instance, they can't say "We're going to make a buttercream". They have to say "Weigh out 60g of icing sugar and 30g of butter into a bowl. Now whisk them together".
Meanwhile, the cook wouldn't be told what they're making, and wouldn't be allowed to speak.
This is mostly to prevent Ben from correcting his instructions, or from knowing what he's supposed to be doing.
I hear Janice's "oh dear oh dear" in my head whenever I or someone else mess something up now 😆
And like, while I fully support social distancing and masks and all the precautions we take, it kind of feels pointless in these kinds of settings. Like anyone who is making the food is within 6 feet of it getting their micro-droplets on the food. And then they pass that food they just breathed near to someone to eat, who even though they were more than 6 feet apart, but is now going to eat that food, just sort of defeated the whole purpose of doing that social distancing. A more reliable method is to create germ-pods of people, where they are able to be close to and interact with each other, but no one else, and trust is established that everyone is careful and doesn't socialize outside of their germ-pod. The main person I would be concerned with would be Jamie since he has wife and kids, but I don't think any of the others do, I am assuming they all live alone and don't have a partner, but I don't know.

The difference with his scoring I think is that he rates how well he did the things he did sometimes without factoring in how much it contributes to the dish. So if he did only one thing but did it well he'll give himself a higher score than others might
He absolutely did deserve at least a 6, he basically did a "perfect" job, considering what he had to work with + the time. Aaaand he only had 2 options, the first is the one he went with, he tried to save it, but the dish was beyond any redemption xD The second option was for him to say: "Fuck it" and throw it away and force a re-do of the episode :D

He didn’t make “a cake” - he made a sponge, which could be used (and often are) in layered pastries. Puff only takes 10 minutes to cook, frankly anyone bar Jamie could have got that into the oven to add to the dish.
