Foiling terms: Angle of Incidence vs Angle of Attack

  • The term angle of attack (AOA) is often used in foiling but technically the static angle built into the foil is called the angle of incidence (AOI) while angle of attack is the variable angle between foil and the water flowing over the foil while foiling. My friend Lane Mead from Ke Nalu pointed this out to me and I find the concept helpful in understanding how the foil works, the interplay between the foil and the angle relative to the board, and how to control flight by adjusting the dynamic angle of attack by shifting body weight.
As Sam Pa'e says: "fly low and in control", this is a helpful tip to remember when learning how to foil. Controlling the angle of attack and keeping it small relative to the surface of the wave and the water flow is one of the most challenging aspects to learn when you are starting out.

I'm building all my own equipment from composites and need these details (Angle of incedence ) to begin assembling the foil on the fusalage ~ Super stoked to find out this detail ! Thanks Aloha ~

Hi Robert, you are now the "rocket scientist" of the foil. Glad you got this stuff figured out, as the technical stuff is way over my head. Regardless, I always learn something
every time I watch one of your videos. Thanks, MD

Thank you Michael, I have to credit Lane Mead from Ke Nalu for explaining the difference between AOA and AOI to me, I'm just passing on what I have learned.

Great to see some CFD snapshots. I wonder if you could elaborate or do a video on the purpose of the rear stabiliser. Thanks

That sounds like a good topic. I’m not really an expert on the science but can explain what works for me. The interview with Adrian gets into this

Good Topic Rob, Can U design a system on da mast? To make adjustments as needed. Instead of adding shims or washers etc. 👍

Hi Paul, making the mast to fuselage angle adjustable is a good idea. On your Easy Foiler board you don't need any shims, it works best without shims. I would only consider using shims if you have a board that has a lot of rocker under the foil mount area.
