  • The invention of the wheellock in Europe can be placed at about 1500. There is a vocal group of scholars who believe Leonardo da Vinci was the inventor. Drawings made by Leonardo of a wheellock mechanism date (depending on the authority) from either the mid-1490s or the first decade of the 16th century. However, a drawing from a book of German inventions (dated 1505) and a 1507 reference to the purchase of a wheellock in Austria may indicate the inventor was an unknown German mechanic instead.
    In 1517 and 1518, the first gun control laws banning the wheellock were proclaimed by the Emperor Maximilian I, initially in Austria and later throughout the Holy Roman Empire. Several Italian states followed suit in the 1520s and 1530s, another argument used by the pro-German camp.
    As Lisa Jardine relates in her account of the assassination of William the Silent of the Netherlands, in 1584, the small size, ease of concealment and user-friendly loading aspect of the wheellock, compared to larger and more cumbersome hand-held weapons, meant that it was used for the killing of public figures, such as Francis, Duke of Guise and William himself. Jardine also argues that a stray wheellock pistol shot may have been responsible for the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of French Huguenots in 1572
    Wheellock pistols were in common use during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) on both sides for cavalry and officers. Around 1650 the flintlock began to replace the wheellock as it was cheaper and easier to use than the wheellock.
    Wheel-lock firearms were never mass-produced for military purposes, but the best preserved armoury collection at the Landeszeughaus in Graz, Austria, contains over 3,000 examples, many of which were produced in small batches for military units.

    Hi, nice work. Just a note: "and a 1507 reference to the purchase of a wheellock in Austria" . That account is not from Austria, but Hungary. Roman Legionnaires prized pyrite to use with their steels in place of flint for starting fires. When you use flint, the spark is made by shaving bits off of the steel, but using pyrite, the shavings that make sparks are bits of pyrite, which burn a bit hotter and longer to catch the tinder.

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  3 місяці тому +2

      Yep that would be my experience with them. I was talking to Jesse over at the rifle shop and he has a few that have flints in them and whenever I asked him about it he said that sometimes people, especially here in North America were acquiring iron. Pyrite was a lot harder in the 17th century. Would use flints in their wheel locks And then switch out to something like a snaphaunce after the wheel wore out.

    • @kingdarkem
      @kingdarkem 3 місяці тому

      Pyrite was also valuable by the Spanish and Portuguese as a source of sulfur. Pyrite was put into a clay pot and sealed so airtight. A pipe went to other sealed pots and then a pipe went into a fire. The first pot filled with pyrite was then cooked in a fire that had been built around it. This separated the elemental sulfur from the iron via distillation. The iron left behind was why the Spanish and Portuguese used iron shot. The english and French used galena ore which is sulfur and lead bearing which is why they used lead shot.
      Also interesting fact cause paper was so expensive. The thin inner membrane of animal skins which is nowadays scraped off during leather making as well as animal intestine was used to improve upon paper which would be useless when wet. They were often sealed with a mixture of natural resin and wax to make them "water proof".

    Two things. One I LOVE the wood on that piece , I am interested in the details of how you finished it. Two, I admit to missing some of the now removed "evolution" segments and would LOVE a function walk through in one of your live sessions I find wheel lock details very difficult to come by and a nice discussion of the intricacies of the innards would be awesome.

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  3 місяці тому

      Thanks, If you want a detailed series on how to evolve a wheel lock and it is actually where I got a lot of my information for this build. Go check out homemade history he's actually here in the comments. He has a whole very long series on a absolutely gorgeous elaborately carved puffer wheel lock pistol that he built 100% from scratch
      As for the first question, as in how I finished the wood, this is Black Walnut from just south of me down in Oklahoma and I stained it with aqua Fortis. One time allowed the aqua Fortis to dry for 30 minutes which turned the wood completely black and then I went and took a propane torch and heated it up slowly until the wood blushed turning a very dark red by then, added several coats of tung oil and then use some Alfie shine wood wax

    • @greywuuf
      @greywuuf 3 місяці тому +1

      @Real11BangBang Interesting, I have never considered "strong water" on walnut ....I have used it o. Maple and on a Traditions kit ( probably beech or some south American light wood) I think it turned out fantastic... not only good grain. UT it gives it an honest "Old" feel. Looks very simmilar to my inherited working guns ( mid 50's winchesters etc)

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  3 місяці тому

      Yes the muzzleloading forum told me not to use it on Walnut because it would make the wood look like I painted it black. However, that was evidently not the case LOL. Also, this is the end result of homemade histories Wheelock that he built and has a series on how to do it from scratch

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  3 місяці тому

      Yep, and that's the thing I try to tell people who get discouraged from reading the muzzleloading forum. Talking about building locks from castings is that you don't need fancy equipment. As long as you pay attention to detail, you can do it with a hand drill I'm convinced. I'm just not that good and the reason I say it could be done with a han drill is because that is how it would have been done originally.
      I saw one guy who when confronted about the fact that CNC machines and lathes were not used. Historically, his excuse was that and I quote "locks from the original time. That they were made were never any good."
      My sarcastic thought response is usually "yes, because putting food on the table fighting off brigand's or winning Wars was not very important. Evidently so much so that it wasn't important that people had reliable firearms." 😂

Normally you'd use 2F grain powder for the main charge, and 3 or 4F powder for the priming pan. And yes I also shoot muzzle loaders. But I normally shoot a Percussion Caplock rifle. But I've shot enough Flintlock rifles and muskets, so that I've learned a few things. But you did a great job building that carbine. Just keep her clean :)

    Good job! Your pyrite looks to be holding up very well and the dog moves easily from what I can see. The dog on my original has such a strong spring that I think it would break a finger if moved carelessly-it really hampers the operation of that gun but it’s an older design and I have wonder if the 17th century ones were easier to move and easier on pyrites. Yours seems to bear this out if the design is authentic and I think that it is. By the way, I sent those photos of my gun using a file transfer service but they were never downloaded. Maybe the message ended up in a junk mail folder? Maybe I should order one of these kits.

    • @Real11BangBang

    I'm pretty educated about black powder and had never heard of one of these until i watched the series of you *ahem* "evolving" one. I was looking forward to seeing the rest. This was really cool, if i had done all of that work it would be my favorite also. Looks to be a good shooter!

      Thank you! Yes, now that I've gotten hang of building these, it's getting a little easier. I'm already about halfway through my next lock bui..... Excuse me, I mean evolution

      It is black walnut that I stained with aqua Fortis And heat to give it an aged look. Then it was treated with tung oil and alfy shine

    Did you have to construct this gun yourself? I have been looking for a wheelock for ages

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  3 місяці тому +1

      So I got this as a kit from the rifle shop out of wellston Oklahoma but the parts were just castings. They had to be filed drilled tapped hardened heat treated to the proper specifications. But if you really want a Wheelock I would strongly suggest building one like this. It's hard work but definitely worth it and definitely doable with standard tools

    Fabulous! I “evolved” a paddle butt 20g smoothbore using a pistol wheel lock kit from Rifle Shoppe .Looks very similar. And yes, despite inconsistent ignition I love it. I found that the kitset steel for the springs could not be hardened to the right degree even by professional heat treaters. So i bought a leaf spring from a Mitsubishi truck and started filing. I heated it in my fireplace to make it softer for hand filing.When satisfied with the shape i did my own heat treating. Got it red hot in the fireplace. Took it to the point where a magnet wouldn’t stick to it then quenched it with water then heated it again ,to a known lesser temperature by putting it in melted lead then letting it air cool. Worked fine. I have also used the smoke point of canola cooking oil to indicate a lesser temperature. (400 degrees is think)Works way better now. I find that brushing clean the pyrite ,wheel and pan after every shot helps. Also, don’t use one big pyrite crystal.They look right but are too hard. Use a cluster of small ones or the crumblier stuff. I also feel it might be better to not have a leather patch to hold the pyrite in the jaws of the dog. It absorbs too much shock. But just to be on the safe side i am in the process of making a drop in matchlock conversion. This is period correct for 30 years war as match was always easy to find when the pyrite ran out on a long campaign. Have also done a Scottish Heron Butt Snaphaunce with ball trigger. And a Scandinavian Snaplock with interchangeable percussion and matchlocks. I and a pal here in New Zealand share an obsession with primitive ignition systems. We call ourselves the Primitive Ignition System Society but y/t would not like us to use our acronym.

      Lead sheet instead of leather to hold flints/pyrite is historically accurate.
