Hot glue does shrink over time, Especially when you live somewhere damp. I would recommend the wood glue over the hot glue. My grandma makes doll houses, and her first one fell apart after 5 years because the whole thing was put together with hot glue. (we live in Oregon) This is a really great project, I'm going to try it out! The kit trned out really nice. Good work
ArtByKarenEHaley - Oh good to know, thanks for the headsup! I live in a very dry climate so I've never had to deal with that problem! And if you do make it, I'd love to see how it turns out! They're really fun and easy to make - they would be super quick if it wasn't for drying time.
I totally snorted my coffee this morning when the "Be proud Mom, I made a colour chart" thing popped up. LOL! This is gorgeous...might do it for my wooden box of Schmincke paints :). You'll have to help me though!
Believe it or not, i literally just googled "how to make your own watercolor box" and i clicked on that video then i realized it was yours lol. I'm in the process of making mine with all the 1/2 pans i have because i'm just so sick of having 2 or 3 boxes and single colors flying around and it takes too muh space too and i also want to do some custom colors so i need like a box with all my colors + some empty pans or something and then on the other side a palette with lots of space. thanks again for the video :)
+Sakuems - GIRL let me email you because I made my own after this for my Dan Smith paints, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out so it might help you! I'll shoot you an email in a couple hours once I finish my hw!
+HulloAlice oooh that would be so nice of you ! i have selected all my colors + some giant pans of my kuretake palette and now i'm like "how do i do this" lol because it's quite a lot of colors and i want the box to take as less space as possible lol
love this kit. I would try to find an aqua brush that breaks down so I have my water as well. I would cut some h20color paper to box size dimensions & stick in baggie so I would have paper & now that I think of it...I'd fold up a cpla pieces of papertowel to stick in there too.(I think you just made my gift idea list so much easier)I've got a really cute perfect size wooden box that turkish candies came in...I don't wanna ruin that art tho. now I'll be on lookout for those @ thrift stores, yard sales etc...
Not only was this a creative idea but also a feeling of satisfaction takes over your mind. (I was thinking of using ice cube trays) This is just perfect for an independent artist. This box would describe them in a way.
This is exactly what I was looking for!!!! I got these really nice tube water colors as a gift but and liked the kind that were in the pallets already. So when I saw this I was like YES!!!
I've been looking for similar ideas to see how they worked. I've been thinking for months on making one from a cigar box. Thinking of spray painting the inside of the top with appliance enamel paint to create a large mixing area. How are you liking the DS paints? I hear the normal ones are good but Handprint doesn't seem to recommend the Primatek line. I personally am loving the QoR and M. Graham lines (from the little bit I have tried out). The M. Graham has the honey in it which keeps it moist and rewettable and the QoR is bound with Aquazol which seems to be really rewettable also. I have a Venetian Red that I paletted and last used over a month ago and it's still moist in a non-sealed palette! Love your videos and keep them coming! Hope all is well in your life.
This box turned out beautiful!!! I love doing projects like this with stuff I find at thrift shops. I actually have 2 different wooden boxes I am redoing for my art room to store supplies in!! TFS.... BTW...Daniel Smith makes the best watercolor paints. They’re my absolute favorite, I have 58 of the DS colors. This is just a fantastic idea for creating a beautiful watercolor palette to keep on a desk. 💕
First time I bought a tube of watercolor paint it exploded all over my hand as I was opening it. Luckily, I was able to save most of it on my palette but gosh that was a mess. I'm from Utah, to the altitude is pretty high, and I didn't know it would do that.. Learned that lesson quickly lol.
So how are you liking Daniel smith paints? I'm a beginner however my nephew is into watercolor and is a bit more advanced than I am but he was using kid paints because his art teacher (freshman in high school) suggested using them the first year of his art class. Now with sophomore year around the corner and both our birthdays are back to back I splurged and picked up all the colors of the essentials set but in the 15ml tubes for us to share and I went a bit more out of control and got us both da Vinci sable brush sets (shockingly for 5 brushes size 0-6 for $35) which I have been using and are really a game changer compared to the taklon and water brush I was using before. My question is coming....I also got us both the Quiller color wheel paint pallet to help us understand more about color theory by actually using the paints and the visual color wheel in the pallet I thought was a good idea. Now for my question...aside from the six colors in the Daniel Smith essentials kit what colors do you think are valuable to have? I like to paint florals and also (not sure I can call it painting) capturing the movement of the watercolor (blooming, callifowers and back runs which I a so good at that I even get those when I don't want them). My nephew from what I have seen of his paintings he totally impressed me with his talent for painting animals (deer and birds ect). I did buy him the white knights before I saw you 101 video and felt much better about my purchase for him but the excuse to buy Daniel smith to gift both myself and nephew was just a win win but want to fill our pallets but also want to us both to be forced to learn our colors and mixing. So you can see 6 colors is great to have and start but I feel like there should be more even for the beginner. Just to add I have always either apprenticed, worked or even owned a business that involved artisty of some sort and know first hand how important quality is even if your a beginner or not. So if it weren't for both of us basically sharing each tube there was no way I would get DS to learn the beautiful and hard form of painting (hence the white nights purchase)....that's really an excuse I probably would have done it anyway lol but you get what I mean. For me I will most likely keep at it and stick with it forever (for me) with quality materials than get frustrated because of the materials working against me (ADHD over here and I have a tendency to get get bored and tired of monotony, thank god watercolor is unpredictable!). Ok sorry for the short story but any suggestions on supplementing the color wheel pallet (it really is cool) would be greatly appreciated and super helpful!!! Thank you so much and thanks for all the work you put into the videos, we love the 101 series and would love if maybe...if maybe one day you could do a "paint along", for instance being able to download a sketch by you and photo reference to print out so for those like myself who is also learning how to draw more than stick figures ( hey, my stick figures were better than everyone else's in the 5th grade but anything more than that was not more than lines and scribbles) and a tutorial start to finish with a materials list...I think that would be so much fun! Wishful thinking though I know. That's a lot to ask but you seem fun and I can relate to talking fast and saying "like" and "umm" a lot too and I couldn't hurt to ask/request/suggest! Ok I'm going to quit typing, thanks again! (Edit: omg this is so long I'm so sorry for the novel I just wrote! I promise to keep them a bit less lengthy next time!)
So do the water colors dry? I just got into them and I was wondering how I'd be able to refill my koi pallete when the pans run out. So I guess it's ok to fill them up with my own tube watercolors and let them dry so they can be in a pan form?
I have a question though, how do you clean the palette out? what if i want to completely change the range of colors on the inside? How were you able to do it? thanks :)
honestly if it were me, i wouldnt ever use one of these mini watercolor kits cuz they seem like such a hassle. cute, but what a hassle. if you plan on washing out the colors you could try a wet sponge & wipe it out, or simply not glue it down to the bottom so you can take it out and wash out the paints. idk. i like to wash my paints out every now and again cuz i like to start over sometimes.
Ok, my question will be ridiculous :) - I am not well in english language, please, tell me somebody, what is the name of that lined square-ish thing on the table what help artist to draw proper angles and lines ( that, what looks like a table-cover :D) thx! :D
Why comment that you don’t like the colors? That’s so rude. Just wondering what people like you think about to leave such a passive aggressive comment on free content? Be nice.
it's so satisfying how everything fits so snugly and how it's so organised ah

Alright, I shall bud HulloAlice

lyndacoles - NOW YOU DON'T HAVE TOO ;) ;) ;)
Also, love the colors you chose. Reminds me of oxidized copper.

So many videos this week... Thanks Alice!

Does the liquid paint dry into the molds? So then it would work like a regular water color pallet? Or does it stay liquid?
How do you use the palette for mixing if its stuck to the lid, as i can see the lid only opend to 90 degree?
RLE82
7:52 it opens 180°
This is such a good idea!
Eve Br - I'm glad you like it!
It is so cute
+shaquila hill - Thanks!
SOOOO DOING THIS TYSM
Hi, youre awesoome!! 😍😍😍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Aaaaaa i jusy got this in my recommendations x3
Alice heres an idea mabye get a old sented oil bottle and put water in and put it in the box for painting on the go :D
+Katherine McBride - Great idea Katherine!
Thanks Alice hope it helps :D
Wonderful idea! Are you using actual tubed watercolor paints or acrylic paints?
to paint the box she used acrylic paint, but the paint she put in the palette was tubed watercolour paint :)
cute
i love this idea :D Would it work to pour in gouache paints instead?
+Isabelle Spain I would test out if they would dry the way you want first and then be able to use them still, but if that works, then 100% yeah!
you are so cute and good job:P
This is great. Do the paints dry up being left out like that?
+Cynthia Ava the watercolors will be activated with water, so although they do dry matte, you can keep reusing them!
So do the water colors dry? I just got into them and I was wondering how I'd be able to refill my koi pallete when the pans run out. So I guess it's ok to fill them up with my own tube watercolors and let them dry so they can be in a pan form?
+Irene Ochoa - Yes they do! Totally okay :)
I used 2 week pill organizer some times the druggist will give them to u, and i used the wood box michaels calls a cigar box about $5
and i put my palette in the bottom between the pill boxes
I have a question though, how do you clean the palette out? what if i want to completely change the range of colors on the inside? How were you able to do it? thanks :)
honestly if it were me, i wouldnt ever use one of these mini watercolor kits cuz they seem like such a hassle. cute, but what a hassle. if you plan on washing out the colors you could try a wet sponge & wipe it out, or simply not glue it down to the bottom so you can take it out and wash out the paints. idk. i like to wash my paints out every now and again cuz i like to start over sometimes.
you could use velcro stickers instead of glue, so you can take them out and wash them. :)
Did you pour the entirety of your paint tubes into the slots, or just a smaller amount?
it depends on the user
Wonderful box so very cute ! I just can not find a way to pack all that I need into such a small space! How do you do it??
{{{{{{{{envy}}}}}}
hey what if i use bottle caps?
Nano you would have to use platic bottle caps uniform in size. not ones that rust.
Beth Mulligan ya you are right I'm talking about one.
How long does it take for the watercolor paint to harden?
it depends on which brand you use, but usually it varies between 6-24 hours. :)
Ok, my question will be ridiculous :) - I am not well in english language, please, tell me somebody, what is the name of that lined square-ish thing on the table what help artist to draw proper angles and lines ( that, what looks like a table-cover :D)
thx! :D
+Miss Evilkoala its a cutting mat and your English is pretty close to perfect.
where do you buy the box
any craft store. I have seen them at michael's, hobby lobby, and walmart
please make more cool tutorials
I know this sounds dumb but do you use water pant or normal
+Charlie Smit thanks
+vivien2003 she used watercolor paints
can i use superglue??
+Liemariko hmmm, maybe! It might soak into the wood though.
It's a bit strange,
How now she uses green not purple for the ' *hulloalice* ' at the start :3
You can learn more about it on woodprix website I think.
Daniel Smith...cheap? D:
I started my adventure with wood thanks to plans from the Stodoys.
Woodprix has very good and accurate plans.
Buy it and paste it yourself more than diy
Feel free to make your own version with a box, palette, pans, and watercolors all made from scratch! I would love to see it!! :))
Rude
I rather buy my own
hahaha😂😂
HulloAlice I dm one to you in on Instagram.
I really like the Woodprix plans.
dear lord in heaven get a better microphone
She has more subscribers than you so it doesn't seem to be much of a problem. Have a nice day.
wtf your art stuff is all so cheap!! the Micheals near me is, like, the most expensive place EVER!!
wtf, Michael's has these things called COUPONS. Avail yourself to the process!
the colors look really ugly ngl but good video
Thanks! I like the colors but the great thing about this is you can use whatever colors you want!
Why comment that you don’t like the colors? That’s so rude. Just wondering what people like you think about to leave such a passive aggressive comment on free content? Be nice.
