On a technical level the counter page is not using a 'clock counter' at all, it is calling a service endpoint which returns the current membership total figure then displays that on the page. This endpoint is then called every 30 seconds and the new figure returned updates the count displayed. I am shocked that anyone with tech experience would attempt to say this is fake. From my analysis of the page it looks totally legitimate. There is no way to tell if the number being returned from the counter service is genuine but nothing on the page they have access to would suggest it is fake. In my opinion it is legitimate.

The only clock timer on the page is a background process that refreshes the count every 30 seconds. The actual count is a number returned from an endpoint service which looks legitimate to me. I am able to call this service myself and it returns the number displayed on the page. Looking at the counts over a few hours it seems legitimate as the increases were virtually nothing over night and have picked up during the daytime. You can also see if the service is queried say every second that it increases none linearly as you would expect.
