Great topic guys, thank you. I can recommend a fantastic book by the adventurer/doctor/physician Dr. Mike Stroud called Survival of The Fittest. Mike was Sir Ranulph Fiennes companion on their epic unsupported crossing of Antarctica in 1993 which is still the longest unsupported foot journey by man.
Mike's field of expertise is as one Europe's finest physicians, specialising in the limits of human endurance and advising the ministry of defence, Olympic athletes etc with a backgrond in anthropology. In the book, he sheds fascinating light on human evolution, the problems caused by our modern sedentary lifestyles both physical and psychological, and how foot journeys release all kinds of chemicals in our brains and stimulate our neural pathways. He says hiw we are supremely evolved to walk long distances through challenging terrains day after day year-round through all weather's. Quite simply, Mike says that we have evolved to walk.
