I can tell you, I have bought a bunch of units and multieffects and this one cuts through the mix like no other unit. The preamps are very close to tubes. You can get real sweet or rough sounding tones out of it. So don’t let you irritate of the solo sounds without band or backing track. This one is exactly made for playing in live situations. But tweaking and testing before, what the controls do and how they interact with each other is a must. Great gear!
The grittier Bass Driver was really the only thing I wanted from my original Bass Fly Rig that it didn't offer. The VT was nice but for more modern stuff, it was a little lacking compared to other options. I am absolutely buying this new V.2. I'd have liked a bit more control and options with the compressor, but I get you only have so much room in the blue case. Great piece of gear.
I'm going to have to upgrade to one of these have been using the programable sansamp pedal for a few years and this looks like a logical replacement/upgrade :)
Very cool and awesome to see an update after valeton cloned the fly rig under the name bass dapper. I might have to trade that one in for the fly rig 2.0...
Great news - I was expecting a Bass Fly Rigs V2 for a while. I love the two Gain/Master settings, kind of like the SH-1 pedal. Also it is great that you can switch between VT Bass DI or Bass Driver DI tones. What I don't get, I miss the Character knob that I really appreciate at all the VT Bass pedals so far. How can I get all the tones without that knob? We will see ... looking forward to get it :-) !
I just asked about the missing character knob. And they said the mid knob acts like the character knob in VT Bass mode. That makes sense as the character knob really just controls the mids pre-gain.
I've been comparing BFR2 with its predecessor and it seems that by default the character amount is set to 2 o'clock. The only way I found to reduce it is to cut hiqh frequencies with bass guitar pre-eq (and it works great for me!). Boosting mid post-eq knob helps with recreating higher character settings. However, in this case getting pretty close settings to BFR1 requires much fiddling with EQ (low and high knobs) since it doesn't give the possiblity to control the amount of mids around 1KHz. To sum up, IMO BFR2 (though with some affort) in VT bass DI mode can cover almost the entire pallete of BFR1 sounds. Great stuff! Thanks Tech21 guys :)
@@JTroskaTV Interesting! I haven't seen this anywhere in any of the many articles or videos I've seen and it's not in the manual! If this is true, they should definitely be shouting this as the lack of a "character" knob is one of the most common complaints I see. I've been googling as much as I could find about it before ordering one but just did it.
I just got one and it's pretty neat! Only thing I find missing is the actual "character" knob that the VT bass DI has. In fact that enough is reason for me to keep my VTbass. That character knob alone with out any other EQ is enough for me to dial in some of the gnarliest tones out of my Rickenbacker then possible elsewhere, and I feel like the V2 flyrig would have been the perfect unit with that knob on board.
I think the same, the character knob is one of the best thing on the FlyRig V1. And would be nice to find excatly the same set up on the V2 as on the v1, but without the charcter knob must find a different way to do that. But what the character knob really does? Dealing with the mids, or more than that?
Hi Tim. Great video, and I love your bass playing. Question on this device... I've learned over the years that fuzz/distortion/overdrive pedals sound great in my game room through a 50w amp, but when I get on stage and play through my 400w gig rig, or a big PA, when the distortion goes on, the bottom drops out! (I'm not really good at understanding the technical stuff, but I THINK that's because distortion compresses the signal.) I'm really thinking of getting this to use as a DI box, and leave my back-breaking cabinets at home. --- Thus the question... If I use this, instead of my bass rig, and run right out from it into the house PA, when I bring that nice fuzzy distortion up, does my bottom end hols up in the mix? Thanks in advance for the reply!
Tim, I purchased one of these and I absolutely love it. I used it on stage and all I needed was ample bass in my wedge monitor and I was good to go. Happy to leave those heavy cabinets at home! Just one question. I'm a little confused as to exactly what the speaker emulation button does, and how it is supposed to be used. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.
Nice, but I'd like to see a "FX only" version of it without the amp simulation, DI etc.. It would be great if you already have a Tech 21 preamp, amp etc. Just chorus, octaver, maybe some delay and a 2-band compressor like the old Trace Elliot SMX Dual Compressor, which is a one of my "secret weapons".
@@Tech21nyc Maybe just a "Jump Rig". The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy tells us: "There is an art, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." :-)
I would wish for the opposite: Just compression, thanks. I think the octave/filter sections was the only weakness of V1. That chorus does sound good though.
What we need is this BUT take out the EFX section. Have a 1 knob noise gate, and make the CHAR and BITE dials instead of buttons. Please keep the FX loop. Instantly becomes a smaller foot print and more tweakable. We have other pedals if we want efx
I just bought one of these and I’m having so much fun with it! Just I don’t understand how the speaker simulation circuit works, if you could explain it to me in simple words pls it would be awesome!
The easiest way to understand it is to try the switch both ways and pick the sound that "you" prefer. There is no right or wrong setting. It is an option like everything else. We prefer the switch engaged.
Nice! Will this allow me to simulate the DuG Pinnik pedal ? Would be great to have that, plus many more voicing options. Love mu dUg pedal, but voicing options are numerous. thanks
The dUg DP-3X is a unique beast. It is essentially a "bi-amp" pedal with low pass and high pass filters. The BFRv2 is a full frequency pedal with effects, and would be an excellent addition to any setup.
PLEASE, create a RACK version of the Fly Rig V2 and the PSA 2.0!! Most Tech 21 Rack versions are way too limited in tone/functionality compared to these versatile pedals. Rack versions are very important for professional studio/touring use.
Because the PA is a full range system. The speakers in guitar amps roll off high end around 3-5kHz. The speaker sim in our products does the same. Without this high end roll off any high gain distortion sounds will be extremely fizzy sounding.
Has anyone found button toppers that will fit these footswitches? I've tried a bunch and none fit. These footswitches are shallower and the top wider than most standard foot switches, Thanks!
I bought the Bass Fly Rig v2. I love the pedal (the preamp part), but not the FX part of it. I don't need that. But I have a problem, I want to buy separate effects/pedals (tuner, compressor, SansAmp, drive, etc.) and I really like my SansAmp tone! I love it! I use the compressor level at 12, comp at 9. The SansAmp: Char in (activated) without Bite (no Bite push), Drive 1 at 9, Drive 2 at 10, Low at 3, Mid at 1.5, High at 1.5, Level 1 at 10, Level 2 at 10 (only a little more drive - and volume from the drive - between channel 1 and 2). No cab sim, I use the cab sim from my Darkglass Microtubes X Ultra. I want to buy the PolyTune 3 Mini, Empress Bass Compressor Blue SPK, (and here is my problem) SansAmp BDDI v2 or the Character VT DI !!!, and I have the Darkglass Microtubes X Ultra for nu-metal/djent style distorsion (now I use the Bass Fly Rig v2 with the Darkglass, I want to go for individual pedals for better control). I love my settings and tone of the SansAmp preamp on my Fly Rig v2, I want the same sound/character, BDDI v2 or VT DI? Because on my Fly Rig v2 I have the Char in, and that is the sound what I love, I presume that the BDDI v2 is the closest, no?
“Need” is a relative term. 😁 It honestly depends on what your needs actually are, so we really can’t answer that. They are similar in some respects, but 2 different animals.
I was, right now, just going through my bass gear thinking, I wish I had something like the SH1 with switchable gains and a tuner but with the VT Bass sound. And then UA-cam put this video on my feed. 😮 Does anybody know what the ratio of the compressor is? And I don’t see a Character knob for the VT Bass side. Anybody know how they set/voiced it?
The compressor ratio changes as the control is advanced. It was designed for ease of use and is meant to be set by ear while playing. When the Character switch is set to the VT Bass setting, the mid knob works like the Character control on the older VT Bass pedals.
@@Tech21nyc awesome! I had assumed the compression knob would be for threshold. And that the mid knob would be post-gain. But the way you did it, with ratio and pre-gain mid (character) is more useful. Thanks. 👍
