PUBG: World Record Mortar Shot! | Shooting Past Max Mortar Range

  • You can shoot mortars past 700 if there's a height differential between where you place the mortar and where you shoot.
Math section: Theoretically it is possible to calculate velocity by shooting the mortar on a perfectly flat surface - but this is assuming the mortar firing angle is 45 degrees. This seems like a relatively safe assumption, but is not guaranteed. Gravity being 9.81 seems like a safe assumption as well, given PUBG's history of realism, but is also an assumption.
The main issue with actually accurately measuring range comes from the imprecision of the method to determine the height of the mountain/tall place you fire the mortar from. The spotter scope is limited in the range it will detect objects, meaning you can't just go 846m away to the target, and measure backwards from there, which would give us the accurate height of the mortar. The best I could do was measure distance from an equivalent height location - which is not very precise at all, and ends up giving us nonsensical results.
Long story short, it's not currently possibly by any methods I see to actually measure the predicted distance of a shot pre-emptively. I recommend bringing a 6x+ scope and just using that to range your shots by watching where the first couple of shells land.
Please let me know down below if you have any questions!
Huge thanks to Ray, Franko, and Metric for testing this with me!

I really like how this turned out like most science papers:
Q: Is it possible to calculate the distance?
-> Impressive math and (for the analyzis of a video game) extremly detailed calculations and thorough testing.
    A: No!
Admit it, you just wanted to show off your physics skills... :D

Hehehe, it was kind of fun to have an excuse to bust out the physics! I just felt like it should be doable to figure out the distance consistently, and I hope PUBG releases data eventually to where this is doable!

You are wrong. It is possible to calculate distance the shell flies if you know your elevation and angle.
Pubg mortar lets you select angles from 45.5 to 85.5 with a step of 0.5 degrees.
I made a mortar calculator that reads heightmaps and simulates the second half of the parabola, while assuming the first half projected on X is actually as long as half the distance it shows you in-game.
I then output the closest hits and how you should aim to achieve them. And how close they are.
Since the heightmap features nothing but bare terrain, I made height adjustments tools. You can either control relative height (how tall your or enemies roof is) or sea level heigt of mortar/target.
So if you are landing on a mountain by parachute/glider you just need to clock your altitude by altimeter and you will be able to shoot accurately.
Same goes for shooting at mountains, you need to know sea level altitude of those. And I am working on that.
For example the rondo mountains I am manually painting onto the heightmap.
And for miramar I made a contextual tips system that tells you how tall the house you are shooting from/want to shoot is.
Works with different landmarks and buildings

I will add that V0 of mortar is 151 m/s and g is 32 m/s² for some reason

I’d definitely be curious to see it in action, sounds cool! You can shoot farther than 700m if you are standing on high ground shooting at low ground.

@@TheGodDrumsthat is super wrong. The mortar hits 700 (45.5 deg) meters in 6.66 seconds while for 121 meters (85.5 Deg) it takes 9.365 seconds. Or close to that.

It's really dissappointing that you can't have an accurate measurement of your shots, I know it wouldn't be realistics but it's lack makes mortars a pointless gimmick. I imagine it would be cool to have a faint general area of the shot on your minimap (and extended minimap) but not the full map, but then you'd have people mortaring you all the time.
Instead of adding cool and creative new weapons and attachments we get these things.

    • @TheGodDrums
      @TheGodDrums  2 роки тому +2

Yeah, i really think the mortar needs to be massively easier to use- right now it's basically a useless funny gimmick, but it could be an actual useful tool if reworked.

@@TheGodDrums The problem is that if it becomes too easy to use it'll be far worse than now, but now it just feels like another useless item that takes up spawn rates of something more useful.
