Wow! I love this video so much! Especially the part between 3 and 6 minutes, it's wonderful the experimental aphex twinesque vibe you made emerge from the chaos. Beautiful, thanks for sharing!
Excellent video, thanks! I just got a Benjolin v2 from ALA, having been both intrigued and disappointed by the Rungler in the Hemisphere Suite. This video is full of wonderful techniques.
@@modularjourney60 That's probably Tempi, since it's only used to send pitch CV to the Benjolin but it's been three years ago so I don't remember. I do feel I need to revisit the Benjolin again and do a follow up. I am a bit surprised by my own video, especially the last part.
Some really nice things in here. The Benjolin is mostly used for noise it seems. But as you show here, it can also be a good ambient instrument. I bought a Macumbista Benjolin last year, and found it to be a good ambient machine. I have done some videos on it also. Really love this instrument :)
I built the official R.H. Benjolin, from the open source instructions, including etching my own PCB. Built a nice case for it, with all the patch points on 1/8" jacks. It is hands down, my favorite noise box. I have been looking for another one, with more features ever since. This V2 looks interesting.
Just got mine and i love it. From rattling tractor engine sounds to slow krell patch like stuff. If you don't think too much about how it works it really feels like it has a life of its own. Great thing, would have saved a lot of money if i had bought this first or very early. Really fun, i don't want any perfect, linear stuff, wish there were more weird modules like this, also sequencers, filters, sampling stuff, all with this weird uncontrollable behaviour.
The second oscillator works as a clock, and if you don't use CV, the attenuator affects the clock when nothing's patched to the CV inputs, otherwise it boosts the incoming CV. So if you turn OSC2 all the way CCW, it will not run at all. The manual will explain what is what, but it's a chaos machine so it doesn't matter if you're a novice or an expert :). The module can look for 'balance' on its own, so there can be moments of silence on modest settings. Make sure you slow down OSC2 and monitor OSC1 if you want more melodic stuff.
This is great, it will help me learn my Benjolin V2 better and faster! One question before I have even finished watching it. I see you have an Alan Turing Machine in with the Morcom and Enigma. Are you able to hook up the expanders to both Benjolin and Alan at the same time? If not, is there enough difference between Benjolin and Alan to make it worthwhile to have both? Also a tiny correction. At 1:33 you say that Osc 1 clocks the Rungler, but it’s actually Osc 2...
Yes indeed, that was a typo, it becomes clear later that OSC2 clocks it. I doublechecked before uploading, but at some point you just don't see it anymore. You can use the Enigma and Morcom expanders on the Alan Turing Machine OR the Rungler, not both. But in the DIY domain it would be easy to make a switch so you could use them on both. I got the Alan because I did not yet have a Turing machine but I got the expanders for the Benjolin. Really hard to say what works best. Alan doesn't output quantized voltage but makes the Enigma & Morcom more useful (low speed). When OSC2 is clocking the rungler the expanders will just run too fast imho so they become squarewave voices.
@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks! So far I have yet to really connect with the expanders, but it’s early days yet. Thanks so much for all you do for the modular community! By any chance are you on Lines, the Monome forum?
With slow setting of OSC2 the Morcoms Gates are useful to trigger an envelope to modulate the filter or some drum sounds or whatever outside stuff. Did not geht the Enigma, was out of stock.
I just got the Ben V2. I also have the first version. Many like it for it's quirky random noise. However I am looking for ways to tame it, and reel-it-in. I have had success in the past with taming the V1..... mostly using Volt-Per-Octive inputs, and careful dial manipulations...... and clock divisible CV augmentations.
The Benjolin and the concept of the Rungler really intrigues me. It feels like I am dipping my toe with RunglBook in the Hemisphere Suite of Ornament and Crime. Do you think it's worth going all out with the Benjolin V2?
What the Hemisphere app does is it lets you connect two triangle waves to the shift register, so you can clock it and sample/hold it. So even Maths as a source would get you very close, a mult would let you crosspatch it and adding a simple resonant filter would finish it up. The Benjolin 'just' combines it in one neat package. Thanks for pointing me to that RunglBook app! I tried Hemisphere a long time ago ( clueless about the Rungler) but decided to wait for a second O_C because I can't miss the original quantizer. The Quest continues :).
I like your plug for error instruments and the weathervein (or whatever satelites? i forget but that module always looks cool, and i love error instruments, so unique and wild) this is rad sounding, i love those drones I need to get with federico and get his version of the benjo, its super compact and looks insane
hi I'm interested in this version of benjolin V2, is it possible to get from you a patch schematic when you use clouds and vult freak and ...??? would be great for me to experiment............ thanX
Would you please tell me which way the ribbon cable orientation goes on the Benjolin V2? Does the red stripe on the ribbon cable go next to the little white line or towards the end without any markings? I've looked everywhere including the manual and can't find the info.
Hard to say, my Benjolin V2 from after later has a black terminal at the top with 'power' printed to the right. So it can't go wrong. The red stripe is on the left which would correspond with -12V.
It fits the Benjolin but I think it's more useful with the 'Alan' Turing machine. Morcom is really cool indeed. However, I must admit I haven't really spent enough time for my 'review' to be of any value. I don't think I even patched it in this video.
Amazing! That patch took me into another world.
I love the little glassy sounds you get once you put it into clouds. Quality soundscapes all along the video.
Yes, me too! It's that rungler output with the stepped random values that makes it sound like shards of ice/glass. Wogglebug can probably do it too.
I recently built a whole 168 hp rack based off the benjolin as the centrepiece. It’s a module that makes modular fun again.
I’d love to see and hear that!
I love to hear it too!
I'd love to both see and hear that.
Nicely done. I'm loving my ALA Benjolin v2. It takes a little time and care to tame the raw chaos, but as you showed here it's well worth it.

Sorry for responding so 'after late' but big thanks!
great demonstration of this great piece of gear. lovely sounds, wicked noises.

What is clocking the Rene at 6:40? I don't see you using any pulse out as a clock.

You hit this out of the park. It felt like I was wading in a babbling brook of harmonious blips, beeps and noise.
Sorry for the late reply, I totally missed it. But even after a year it's much appreciated!
@@CinematicLaboratory no problem. One year later still immensely enjoying your channel.
finally .. the video ive been waiting for, thanks
Never touched a synth in my life but I guess I'm sold
Loved this! What a gem of a module
It's really amazing and totally unique.
now that is a wonderful video, very inpiring while waiting for my Bv2 to hit my door :) thank you

Love the slow, jazzy sound at 3:20ff
I expected it to be random instead of melodic. I am not sure if it will ever play the same thing again...
BRILLIANT demonstration. Thank you!
You're welcome!

YES. Absolutely recommend this new v2 from Afterlater. I sold my Epoch Benjolin so I could get it. Also the expanders. Amazing stuff.
O, the short answer is yes!
nice Benjolin 2 video - best one I've seen - now I have to find room for one :-) very little hp left
Just the benjolin and the two expanders and some reverb?

How many different values can come out from Rungler output? Only eight?
I am not 100% sure, but I've learned Rob Hordijk has designed it as 3 bit which gets you a value range of 0 to 8.
awesome vid.
is V2 an upgrade or is V1 the preferred.

Hello! Did you find the Enigma expander useful? After watching this I immediately ordered the Morcom.
It fits the Benjolin but I think it's more useful with the 'Alan' Turing machine. Morcom is really cool indeed. However, I must admit I haven't really spent enough time for my 'review' to be of any value. I don't think I even patched it in this video.
Nice sound - nice "accident"
I could see using this for creating NIN type songs like Alessandro Cortini makes on his Buchla systems.
superb vid, can we be friends?
Thanks and sure
