- Australia accused a Chinese fighter jet of firing flares into the path of a naval helicopter last weekend over international waters of the Yellow Sea. A Chinese J-10 jet dropped flares near an Australian MH-60R Seahawk helicopter during a routine flight on May 4, said Australia. Australia's treasurer slammed Beijing over "dangerous" conduct following reports of Chinese fighter jet firing flares. The Chinese jet “dropped flares about 300 metres in front of the Seahawk helicopter and about 60 metres above it, said Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles.

What the biased reporting failed to highlight is that the incident happened 82nautical miles from Chinese shores and 113nautical miles from the Chinese city of Weihai. Under UNCLOS, up to 200nautical miles is considered EEZ not international waters. One may argue that this is China’s unilateral claim, but please note both China and South Korea contested Yellow Sea as their own territorial waters (not international waters). Likewise, the 9-dash lines in South China Sea is claimed also by the Republic of China even as it is agitating for Taiwan Independence.

Is the Royal Australian Navy operating there in complete and honest adherence to "innocent passage", the onus is for the RAN to prove so. But of course, it wouldn't since it is already framing "Yellow Seas" as international waters, disregarding China (and S. Kr) claiming otherwise. It is also clear that the RAN is exploiting, or at least pushing the boundaries of, the "greyness" in all these; and likewise, China is exercising in the grey in response. But the crux here is the biased reporting and the one-sided smearing of one party.
Regardless, under normal relations and rational foreign policies, the foreign military (in this case RAN) would at the very least give notifications and share plans with the coastal country (in this case China). This goes to demonstrate the lack of mutual country to country respect, and how dangerous miscalculations can happen.
